Hi, I'm not sure how much help I can be but there was an inquest for Lillian B. Murphy 5-27-1924. Does not mean date of death just inquest date I have noticed the dates very as much as 3 months from death date. There are 10 Murphy's listed in the inquest book 1851-1939 one an R. B. was killed in an explosion. Found a marriage for Morton J. Murphy and Lillian B. Nighsonger 11-7-1898 L-328 several other Murphey marriages listed. Census for 1870 and 1880 list a Murphy family but no Morton. No mention of Morton in the 1890 Great Register either. I have no census info after 1880. Etna Mills, is now known as plain Etna. It is located about 30 miles south of Yreka, Siskiyou County. Bosworth, as was common in that era, was a travelling photographer and eventually set up permanent shop at Fall River Mills, Shasta County. ---------- > From: James Drumm <drummj@ocsnet.net> > To: CASHASTA-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [CASHASTA-L] Names/places > Date: Saturday, January 16, 1999 1:04 PM > > Is there an Etna Mills in Shasta Co? Was a fellow in the 30's who drove a Plymouth pickup and horse trailer, with a Shetland pony and a "cowboy outfit" for kids, and all his photography parafanalia. All over the US, it turns out. I was about 2 and in those hairy chaps and cowboy hat, and the picture stayed on my godmothers dresser for years. In the 80's in N. Wisc I had occasion to work in scores of homes, older folks, older homes, at least 5 a week. Began to notice I was seeing that same cowboy getup picture where ever I went! Is there an Etna Mills in Shasta Co? The photographer, F.E.Bosworth was there about 1890? The Shasta Historical Soc has sent me paper copies of Syme family photos, and one looks like a beauty<G> 7 people in a garden setting with names. Beautiful dress clothes. Helen and Myra Syme (these I know) Matt and Annie MacIlwain spelling vague, looking 40'ish Mary White and Charlie Kingsbury, maybe 20 Albert or Gilbert Kingsbury could be 15 or up. I remember the name MacIlwain in SF in the '40's, but never knew how related, nor the spelling. There was a Charles Kingsbury married Agnes Parker, Julia Parker Symes sister; but this one Charlie looks too young. But Agnes and Charles daughter Mary Kingsbury married Charles White, and their daughter Mary White would be this one in the photo, who married Fred Taylor, their daughter Patricia Taylor would be my age, born in the 30's. Does anyone know where Millville, CA in Shasta County? There is a Cemetery where a Charles Reid (1933-1963) is buried, but I'm trying to verify that the info I have is correct. Also is anyone familiar with Montgomery Creek? Is there a Holcomb Cemetery there? I believe that there is a George Moffit Dallas Hobson (d. 1925) buried there and I need to verify it. Looking for Shasta County information on George Henry THOMAS and his wife, ALICE STRAYER, originally from Ohio. They married probably mid 1880's and had a daughter, ADA THOMAS. ALICE died unexpectedly in 1896 and her daughter, ADA, was raised by her STRAYER relatives. ADA later married, at age 16, an older man, CHRISTIAN THARSING. A wonderful Shasta County Historical Society volunteer provided me with a wealth of information on the STRAYER family but would like to learn more about the THOMAS family. Is anyone researching this line? If so, would be happy to share what I have. Jeanne K

Hi Janie, That definitely could be them. The only information on Lilly I have is from the 1880 Census. Could possibly be a typo or something. I was going to look up the actual census in Austin when I was there, but the microfilm copy machine was down so figured I'd do that one later since I already had the information from it. They got the machine fixed right before I had to leave to go home. Will have to do that on my next trip there. That is definitely the right time frame since Margaret is on the 1870 Census and Lilly (Lettie??) is on the 1880. Thank you VERY much for the help. I can use all I can get <G>!!!
