    1. [CASHASTA-L] CENSUS TAKER POEM
    2. CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author Unknown --part1_f9823a7d.24840db2_boundary--

    1. [CASHASTA-L] New County list in California...
    2. Edward A. Black, Sr. [& Ruth M. Black]
    3. I am letting people know that a new County List for Genealogical Discussion & research have been started in California: CATRINIT [Trinity County]. I expect that as a new list and for a rural county, it may not be as active as some of the others in California, but I believe in time it can be very helpful. Subcribing is by sending an e-mail message with the word "subscribe" as the only word in the body of a message with no subject to: (mail mode): "caxxxxxx-l-request@rootsweb.com" (digest mode): "caxxxxxx-d-request@rootsweb.com" Posting queries is by subscribers is to: "caxxxxxx-l@rootsweb.com" where "caxxxxxx" is the list name ["catrinit"] I would like to announce the startup of this new list so that people with an interest in genealogy in Trinity County can be made aware of it. I hope that you can include a reference to it in the Trinity County GenWeb site. Thanks again. Sincerily, Edward, Sr.

    1. [CASHASTA-L] CHRISTENSEN, John
    2. I found the Shasta Co., CA - Index to Federal Land Records. In it I found John CHRISTENSEN's purchase of land. I am sending for those records. I received the form, from Reference Branch (Lands) National Archives, to find out exactly where his property was. In the process of looking up this information, and due to the fact that I am not proficient at cut/paste, I printed this pages out. So, if anyone needs a lookup so that they can send for the record I would be happy to do so. Thank you Jean Hehn Colorado

    1. [CASHASTA-L] COLE/FIELDS/(H)OSMER;Shasta & Mono Co.'s 1875-1907
    2. Brad Aumick
    3. Hello, I'm looking for any info on the COLE, FIELDS, and HOSMER/OSMER families. Chester M. & Eliza A. (UNKNOWN) COLE were married abt. 1830, probably in Michigan. In the 1880 California census, Chester M. & Eliza A. COLE and family, and their son and daughter in law, Robert F. & Mary Jane (FIELDS) COLE and family, are all listed in Bridgeport, Mono Co. Children of Robert F. & Mary Jane (FIELDS) COLE were: 1. Chester Levi COLE, b. Mar. 1874, Washington Territory. 2. Theodore Augustus (Gus) COLE, b. May 1875, California. 3. Nora Ann COLE, b. 1878, California. 4. William Frank COLE, b. 8 July 1881, California. The 1880 census for Bridgeport, Mono Co. California lists "Lake Ontario" as Chester M. COLE's birthplace (very difficult to read). Chester's parents were probably from New York, but their birthplaces are listed only as "U. S.". By 1883, Chester M. COLE, b. 1810, had apparently died. His widow Eliza A. COLE, son Robert F. COLE and his family were back in Kalama, Washington Territory. In 1900, two of Chester & Eliza COLE's sons, George COLE and Edwin COLE, were listed in Redding, Shasta Co. California. Their fathers birthplace was listed as "AT SEA". I believe these two brothers were still in California at least until 1907. Eliza A. (UNKNOWN) was born abt. 1813 Canada, probably Ontario. Both of her parents were born in New York. I believe her maiden name was OSMER (or HOSMER). So far I haven't been able to prove my connection to this HOSMER/OSMER family. They probably left Ontario Co. (?) NY sometime before 1813, went via Ontario, Canada, through Port Huron MI, to St. Clair Co. MI, and by 1840 they were in St. Joseph Co. Michigan. In 1850 they were in Virgil, Kane Co. Illinois: Chester M. COLE, age 40 - born abt. 1810, Farmer. Eliza COLE, age 37 - born abt. 1813. Eight children listed: 1. Mariah COLE, age 18; b. abt. 1832 MI. 2. Orrin H. COLE, age 16; b. abt. 1834 MI. 3. George W. COLE, age 14; b. abt. 1836 MI. 4. Edwin COLE, age 11; b. abt. 1839 MI. 5. Robert COLE, age 10; b. abt. 1840 MI. 6. Albert (or Alfred) COLE; age 5; b. abt. 1845 IL. 7. James W. COLE, age 2; b. abt. 1848 IL. 8. Emma (or Erma) COLE, age 6 mos.; b. abt. Mar. 1850 IL. Wheaton OSMAR, 40, laborer, b. abt. 1810 New York, and Mary J. OSMAR, 12, b. abt. 1838 Michigan, are also listed in the COLE household in 1850. After 1850, aside from Robert COLE's 1872 marriage to Mary Jane FIELDS in Kalama, Washington Territory, I haven't found the COLE family again until Bridgeport, Mono Co. California, in 1880. Does anyone have any connection with these families? Thank you, Brad Aumick aumick@gte.net

He is listed as a laborer living in Texas Springs. I can not find him in the 1880 federal census--has he died, or moved on once again? Any help , leads, or ideas will be greatly appreciated. 3. To All Whom It May Concern: This message is to inform all genealogists, researchers, historians, teachers and students, about a very important web site that has a searchable database of over 1, 650 U.S. Regular Army soldiers who once served at the short-lived Buffalo Barracks between 1835 and 1846. Many of these soldiers went on to fight in the Mexican War and the Civil War. The 1840 Census of Buffalo, NY lists Colonel James M. Bankhead and a total 'quantity' of 671 individuals, ranging in age from 1 to 60, under his command and/or his responsibility. Unfortunately, the census does not list each of these barracks residents by name....only by quantity. HOWEVER, The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site has made available, free of charge, the names of all officers and soldiers (and some of their wifes and dependants...see Barracks Notes) who lived at this federal military post located on the Niagara Frontier. The URL for this outstanding web site is: [ www.buffalonet.org/army ] There, you will discover the "Descriptive & Historical Register Data for Enlisted Soldiers in the U.S. Army," as well as a wealth of information pertaining to the Buffalo Barracks and it's unique historic value. I encourage everyone to take the time to visit this site. Perhaps you have an ancestor who once served there? Enjoy your visit, Cliff Williams 104740.372@compuserve.com buffalobarracks@hotbot.com

I know I even went with her to some but too dim a recollection in the foggy/not understood, past. --JD

    3. Hi Janie and everyone, I was hoping I could get another Census Lookup from you. I may have found where in New York Theodore Dickinson came from and who his parents are. I was able to look at the actual 1860 Shasta County Census today and an 1850 New York. When I got home and compared the copies, there is an E. Dickenson with a wife Lydia next door to Theodore in the 1860 Shasta County (French Gulch). There is also a brother Erastus with a wife Lydia - same ages and everything - in the 1850 New York Census in the same household. Anyway, I was hoping for a lookup in a later (1870 or 1880) Shasta County Census to see if that E. (Erastus?) Dickinson shows up there (He could be listed as Dickerson, I've found them with that spelling too). I really hate when they just used initials! Thanks so much. Denise Fort Hood, TX
