Hi, I am in the process of making an index for the Shasta Co. Marriages. This is part. I have dates and certificate # if needed. I am trying to keep it small. If it appears the names are repeated, it is because the book in sorted by date not name. If you find a name here it is possible I also have the same name listed in the census book. I am working on a home page to put this so if anyone misses any it will be there. I didn't know it would get so big. Just wasn't thinking. I am only through 7 pages of 57. ok stop you all laughing. It will take a while, but I'll get there. The obit appeared in the 12/18/1880 Shasta Courier. Any help would be appreciated. I am more than happy to pay for copy and postage expense. Jeanne
Hi all, Thought you might want to check out the above free database at ancestry.com. Hello Again, I have gone through everything and cannot find the History on Redding (the man). If that page is still around, could someone please post it again. Thank You Jean
I was just reminded of this site and can't remember if it had ever been posted. I came across this one quite a while ago while researching my husband's ancestor, Horace Williams. This lists quite a few names from the area. http://www.usgennet.org/~alhnorus/shasta.html Denise Middletown, CA California Surnames: BROWN, CANTUA, CHURCHMAN, DICKINSON, DOWNS, DUTRA, FELIZ, HAYDEN, KAELIN, MITCHELL, PEPPER, SAXTON, SOTO, VIVED and WILLIAMS
I found your web page, now just need that History! Thanks Jean
Hello List, A few months ago, you posted an article about the History of Redding, and it talked about a fort, and some things happening in Cow Creek etc. It was a very long history. I did not bookmark it, and would like to read it again. Also, do you have a web page? Thank you Jean Hehn Colorado
For those who don't see "Missing Links" from rootsweb: Imagine how many worked on Shasta Dam? VIRTUAL BOUQUETS. by Sheila Tate <wawebft@aol.com> Thanks to two wonderful RootsWeb sites, Random Acts of Kindness and Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild (ISTG), I have found my sister. In 1941, my folks were in Shasta, California. Dad was an ironworker, working on Shasta Dam. They had three babies, a boy aged 14 months and twin girls just 5 weeks old. One of the twins got sick. She was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. Naturally my folks were devastated. They never talked much about it and time went on and all that us siblings could remember was that we were told she was buried in Redding in a little casket with a white teddy bear. Thanks to David Anderson, who volunteers for lookups in Random Acts of Kindness for Shasta County, and is also a fellow ISTG staff member, I have found where and when Marilyn was buried, David is even sending a death certificate, obituary, and picture of the gravesite. Thanks to all the wonderful people who made this possible and a special thank you to David and the people in Redding, California, who went into their basement archives to look for the records. My brother, sister, and I will never forget your kindness. (copied by JD)

Hi all, I just found some information on Marshall Mitchell of Redding. He was a Marshal (yes, Marshal Marshall Mitchell) in Redding, first elected in 1885 and serving for many years. He was reported to come with his father when he was about 11 in 1859. His father was named Isaac Mitchell and the family had 7 children, I think I know the names of 4 of them. This is what I think I know: 1. Isaac1 Mitchell was born in PA, and died 1865 in Shasta Co, CA. He married Esther Alexander August 11, 1836 in Fountain, Fountain, IN. More About Isaac Mitchell: Occupation: Saw-Mill and Lumman? Children of Isaac Mitchell and Esther Alexander are: 2 i. Margaret2 Mitchell, born Abt. 1837 in Bonus Twp., Boone Co, IL; died Bef. 1876 in CA. She married William Wallace Williams Abt. 1855 in Iowa?. 3 ii. Marshall Mitchell, born October 19, 1848 in Bonus Twp., Boone Co, IL; died January 1909 in Marysville, CA. He married Annie Watt 1883. 4 iii. Robert Mitchell, born Abt. 1843. 5 iv. Isaac Mitchell. Notes for Isaac Mitchell: Of Oregon. Any help greatly appreciated! Any Hensel Researchers out there? I am researching some different branches of my Hensel family and believe that there may be a Shasta Co., CA connection. I would appreciate any help proving or disproving the connection between the following individuals. My evidence is pretty weak so far. On the Social Security Death Index, there is the following entry: JOHN HENSEL b. 16 Jan 1902 d. Jul 1979 Last Residence: 96001 (Redding, Shasta, CA) (No Location Given) 543-05-7867 Issued: Oregon (Before 1951) I believe he could be the son of a John L. Hensel that is on the Tulare Co., CA census as follows: 1910 Census of Tulare County, California - Enumneration District No. 187 - Alila 187 2 02A 5 26 28 HENSEL John L. 40, Div. KS OH OH Laborer, 187 2 02A 6 26 28 HENSEL Viste R. d. 12, CA KS CA 187 2 02A 7 26 28 HENSEL Robert L. s. 10, CA KS CA 187 2 02A 8 26 28 HENSEL John D. s. 8, CA KS CA I believe John L. is the son of a Levi Hensel, born in Ohio who migrated to Illinois, Kansas, and Colorado. I have quite a bit of information on Levi and his ancestors and cousins to share. I have a Hensel logbook of names and vital static dates that has hundreds of Hensel names. Please contact me if you are a Hensel researcher and we may be able to find a connection. Thanks. Linda the_guard@msn.com
Source: The Dictionary of Early Shasta County History, 1st Edition, by Dottie Smith, copyright 1991 LEIGHTON the Leighton Post Office was established at Loomis Corner in 1889, discontinued in 1894, and located six miles west of Bella Vista. Named for the Leighton family. LEIGHTON, LEON Arrived at Stillwater in 1878. Schoolteacher at Igo, Union, Bass, and Inwood. Farmed for Franklin Fish. Purchased the Loomis Corners farm in 1882. the Leighton Post Office was located nearby and named for him and his family. That covers the period of time your looking for. Loomis Corners was purchased by Homer W. Loomis in 1861 at the Stillwater Crossing of the California Oregon Trail six miles west of Bella Vista. Loomis Corners was named after Benjamin F. Loomis, a pioneer of an area further up the road, Shingletown, Viola (named after his mother,) and Manzanita Lake. There is both a museum and a peak named after him at Lassen Park. I'm sure the reference to the Stillwater Crossing is a reference to Stillwater Creek which is very close to there. Hi again, It sounded like a nice place. One of the questions on the Homestead Proof--Testimony of Witness, How much of the homestead has the settler cultivated and for how many seasons did he raise crops thereon? Ans. About 50 acres. About 4 seasons. Question: What improvements are on the land and what is their value? Fence, house, barn, well, orchards, vineyards and about 15 acres of cleared land. Value about $3000.00. Another question: For what period or periods has the settler been absent from the land since making settlement, and for what purose; and if temporarily absent, did claimant's family reside up and cultivate the land during such absence? Ans. Once for about 8 months in 1891. He would return every week during this time. He was working for a living and to improve his claim. His family were with him, but would return every week. There are 23 pages in this report. He got his Certificate of Homestead July 29, 1893 The one thing that I find missing is a plat map. Are there any plat maps perhaps in the Historical Library for this time period, for this town and area? ============== There was a land fued and the water was diverted from his land, he dynamited the diversion, I think he eventually lost his farm, to? What was going on in those years. Thank you for your help Jean
Well that sounds just like Deschutes Road. I'm on Millville Plains Road, and this is a common "backroad" for people to take to get from Millville/Whitmore to Anderson. I'm really familiar with the route, but just can't imagine where the town would have been located. On the other hand, there was a fort right there on Dersch, and it is just a cow field now... not so much as a scrap of timber. Hi, I went and looked at the map again, there is an old road that goes from Balls Ferry (where the ferry used to be) just outside Anderson, to back across the country to where palaCedro comes out, that looks like the area it could be. Hi, In case you haven't been to this link it is great for old maps. http://www.livgenmi.com/1895 Leighton is listed on it. Cow creek runs from The Sacramento river just outside of Anderson up into the hills outside of whitmore. Hi I'm new to this list. I belong to several others where I have gotten good information and decided since I live in Shasta County that maybe I should sign up and try to help on this one. Unfortunately even though I have lived here for 20 years I am still pretty much a "newcomer." I wasn't in on the Cow Creek discussion but I do know where it is. I have to drive along it every time I make the drive from my home in Burney down the mountain to Redding, which is the commercial hub of Shasta County. I will go to our local library within the next couple days and see what I can find on Leighton. It doesn't sound familar to me and I can't find it on a map but that may not mean anything. I also know an older lady who is quite the historian for the area and I will contact her to see what she recalls. Give me a couple days and I'll let you know one way or another what I find.
