Janie, What does "Cunningham 8" say ?? If you can see the 1957 Wagon Wheel, the first few stories about Shasta City (Reading Springs) in 1850, it was the ONLY town in northern California, and major supply route for supplies to the north and on the only road. A celebration of July 4th was enjoyed by 50 men, as nearly no women were present yet. By 1856, 601 voters participated in town election. Thus your 1850 list may be mostly Shasta City, name changed from Reading Springs in June 1850. Shortly after Oct 1849, Dr Benjamin Shurtleff arrived, and was named Alcalde, serving until elections Sept 1850 named county officials. There should be some ALLERTONs there soon, maybe 1860? Shurtleff relatives, Adam Parker married Francis Allerton. --JD

HI AGAIN: Thanks for the effort... the death may well be EMELIA E. BUSH, d. December 13,1887, wife of GW. If in fact, it is she, any information included in her death notice, ie., madien name, place of birth, etc. would give me some invaluable information. THANKS! SANDI

HI JANIE: Thanks for the information....you are correct, wrong BUSH. However, I have a question? In your email of Thursday, Oct. 21 you noted you had found two Bush's in the index. CHANNCEY, BUSH, 53 in Redding, Bank President .... and GEORGE W. BUSH 41 in Cottonwood, born in Michigan, occupation Drayman. In your email of today, there is a George Bush, son, of Channcey. This obviously isn't my G.W. BUSH, as you noted, since my GW was born c. 1849. Which would make him 41, as the GW found in Cottonwood. Was there any further information re the G.W. from Cottonwood? I think this most likely is my man as the age is correct, and birthplace is correct.. I noted in your web site that there is a Bush, in the census record, and a Bush in death record.. in Cottonwood. You mentioned that your cousins had given you some books on genealogy when you first got started. Any suggestions for a real novice? Thank you, Janie, for your help. If there is more information re the Bush in Cottonwood, would really appreciate anything you might find, when your time permits. SANDI

I don't have the whole story yet, but will soon, from a 1984 issue of Shasta Hist Soc "Covered Wagon". I have remarked often that either Shasta, the 49ers, or something in Northern waters produced several generations of women prepared to go "nose to nose" with business, men, and the world in general, gender be darned! But I was wrong: it was 1852, the "Sole trader Legislative act" allowing wives to own property as "sole owners", contrary to "community property" laws. Up until 1852 there was the requirement that "sole trader status" be published in the paper, and many wives of Shasta did. Elizabeth Moody was one, who then died in 1855, and her estate was the first womans probate on record. Her husband had no right to dispose of her "interests" prior to the probate, after which he was able to sell an "undivided half interest" in a mine to my GG-uncle William Parker. Did California lead the nation into equal rights? I think maybe so. (news at 11) --JD
