Keep in mind that the town now is Lake Shasta City, which could be messing up your searches. I would suggest contacting one or two of the largest cemeteries, as they probably could help if there are employees who go back 30 years or so. I think the cemetery is closer to Shasta Dam than Keswick Dam. Hopefully I'll get to the historical society and library this week. The two people aren't a mystery to me, but I want to know who all is in the cemetery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi, I remember reading somewhere in some book that Motion Creek is where Coram was founded. My great-grandfather came from Italy and ran a rooming house in Coram circa 1910. Anyway, that's all I know except that I also read that Motion Creek was so named because some prospector had a "motion" there...as in motion sickness if you get my meaning. I wouldn't mind knowing if there is a cemetery there too since one of my GG's daughters died there (we think) though it might have been when he later moved to Pennsylvania after Coram essentially became a ghost town. You did not mention a date range, but if you have not tried the Shasta County Historical Society, I would suggest starting with them. Also try CAGenWeb for Shasta County (they have a "small cemeteries" section, some with only one or two names ) and can follow up with contacts/links on that site, post surname queries, search the old marriage index, etc. For possible obits (depending on date range) and general information about that area, you can also try the Redding public library (main branch for the county library). The reason I say might because this person will go to Anderson, Redding and Chico but doesn't specifically say Shasta. You'll find his/her contact info at www.gengathering.com. You must create a user ID and password to enter this web site. However access to the volunteer contact info is free. If the volunteer doesn't go to Shasta, you can request a copy from the Shasta County Historical Society, http://shastahistorical.org/library/. Successful Searching! You could be right about his ancestry. I know that John's mother came to Menard with him and died here. There is quite a bit written about McNamar/McNeil because he was engaged to Ann Rutledge and there is a lot of mystery about her connection with Lincoln. The book "The Shadows Rise" by John Evangelist Walsh gives quite a bit of information about John. He's a fascinating character in the Lincoln story. Good luck to you in your search. From the information you have looks like he is the one that opened the general store and was friends with Abe Lincoln. The story is in one of the books I found at the library. He went by the name McNeil then. What what I found was that James' his first child's name was Mary E. McNamar, she died at birth. Now he married Susan Nettleton here in CT in 1860. Susan's mother's name was Eliza Hall Nettleton. If you follow the 'naming patern' I am thinking that maybe James' mothers name as Mary Bentley and she married a McNamar. James/Susan's wedding papers say James's parents were from Ireland, Cindy McNamar Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
