    1. [CASHASTA] Redding newspaper February 21-28 1901
    2. Today in History: from the Redding Record Searchlight February 1901 21st incorporation papers were being prepared for the Utah and California Oil Development Co., which had a capital stock of $1 million and holdings of 3,600 acres in western Shasta. 22nd Mt. Shasta Oil Co. was reported to be the first to begin drilling for oil on its property in the Redding/Buckeye area. 23rd a locomotive was knocked off track by a huge boulder that rolled down a steep bluff four miles north of Hornbrook. The passengers were shaken but not injured and after five hours, the train was back on course. 24th the Redding Undertaking Co. was setting up its business in the McChesney building on the southwest corner of Market and Placer streets. 25th a group of Redding merchants met and discussed plans to give businessmen a place to spend their evenings sence an action had been set to have businesses close early. They decided to form "The Clerks Club of Redding" and set up a committee to start plans. 26th the Southern Pacific Rail Road Co. was giving its agents postcards with a brief statement on the back giving reasons wood-be settlers from the east should come to California. 27th the cause of a city blackout was found to be more serious than expected. It was announced that it would take 10 days to get new coils and rewind the armature that gives them power, costing the city $750. 28th a part-time employee of the Trinity Copper Co. was seriously injured while blasting for a new pipeline for an air drill at Shasta King mine. After being thrown 35 feet by an explosion, he was carried out on a stretcher by his peers for five or six miles before a wagon was used to get him to help. 1. [CASHASTA] Fw: Ance$try.com
    2. [NOTE: The point of this message appears after the story.] ----- Original Message ----- From: SJSchwarze@aol.com To: diva1@dnaco.net Sent: Saturday, July 07, 2001 11:13 PM Subject: Ance$try.com Sandra, STOCKING THE SHELVES A company set up a swap shop where everyone could bring their goods for trading and leave them in their parking lot. The store professed to do this out of the goodness of their heart simply to support these potential customers who would in turn buy, what they could not barter for on the trading grounds, from the company store. It seemed a perfect way to draw buyers to the store premises. Then one day, the owners of the store told the traders to stay away because they were going to make some improvements for them. Anticipation grew as some imagined the parking lot might be blacktopped, others thought a pole barn might be erected and replace the little shanties that housed their wares. Several days later they were allowed to return, only to discover everything had been moved into the store. They could not go in unless they filled out preliminary applications for credit cards. They were assured this was for everyone's benefit and no one would be forced to actually buy anything. It was merely a better way of keeping track of who the traders were. Nevertheless, if they wanted to see where their missing possessions had been shelved, they would have to provide the necessary information. Store managers said this arrangement was going to be so much better because they would take good care of everyone's goods and potential customers would no longer have to be lured in with advertisements along the highway and with "goodwill gestures." Who would think to question their motives? Well, some traders were so unhappy with the company they actually insisted on reclaiming their merchandise. The managers said that would be no problem: they could have them back by filling out a request form and supplying proof of ownership for each and every item as long as they could justify why they wanted it taken off the shelf. If the company saw fit, it could choose to return their items, but was under no obligation to do so. According to the store, this was all perfectly legal and fair. Many traders encountered problems because an employee of the store, named Cindy Dahl, had put her name on most of their possessions. Of course, they were supposed to understand this was only a mistake, the company was not trying to steal their things. Who would have reason to think otherwise in light of how fair the management had been while stocking the shelves. Any unclaimed merchandise would simply become the property of the company because fear of registration would be viewed as a willingness to forfeit ownership rights. You might be wondering how this could happen. The fact is that the traders, in using the first "goodwill" facility so generously provided to them, were inadvertently agreeing to have their goods confiscated whenever the managers decided it would be beneficial to the company. The traders were out of line in complaining about this takeover because no one had forced them to use the first facility! They should have read the fine print and been aware of the company's ongoing need to keep their shelves stocked with desirable items. As spokeswoman for this fine upstanding business establishment, June Young informed the outraged traders, "There is no free lunch!" ************************** I just wanted to let you know that Stan and I will not be posting to the new single Clark Co., WI board because of the recent merger with Ancestry.com. We found out that they are claiming anyone whoever made a submission to their GenConnect project automatically authorized them full use of the post in anyway the company cares to use it. Right now they are pledging they won't require a fee to use their Ancestry/RootsWeb/GenConnect, but they have said that may change in the future. Therefore, be sure to read the AUP (acceptable use policy) for their service and be wary, even though they say you still own the copyright to your information, they make it very clear that you are granting them unrestrained use of it. Any requests for removal must be approved by them. Anyone wanting to retract their own submissions can do so by clicking out the "report abuse" form, checking "other" and simply stating they want their information removed for your personal reasons. Some outraged people are writing to the Federal Trade Commission and asking that these practices be investigated. If you feel concerned, please don't hesitate to do likewise. If not, feel free to continue enjoying Ancestry.com's services. General questions, comments and suggestions for the newly merged MyFamily/RootsWeb/Ancestry company should be addressed to JYoung6180@aol.com Please don't hesitate to inform your fellow genealogists about this newly merged company and how the closure of the GenConnect boards has brought about concerns. 1. [CASHASTA] William Valentine & Jerusha MURPHY
    2. I'd like to get in touch with anyone tied to William Valentine and Jerusha (DICKENSON) Murphy of Shasta County. Jerusha is the daughter of Hugh and Milly DICKENSON of Scott County, VA and then Jackson County, MO. Milly was born Mildred "Milly" TEMPLETON on 17 Nov 1796 in North Carolina to Thomas and Mary (WIGFIELD) TEMPLETON, and is sister to my great(3) grandfather Amos TEMPLETON. I'd love to know what background on the TEMPLETON/WIGFIELD line might have been passed down in this family. Hugh and Milly left Scott County, VA and settled in Jackson County, MO in the mid-1830s, possibly by way of Kentucky. They made the trip along with Hugh's family including parents Griffith and Rebecca (FLANNARY) DICKENSON. Hugh and Milly had the following children: Jerusha, Elizabeth, Charles W., Tabitha, Minerva, Polly and Strother. Hugh, Milly and Rebecca are buried in Green Chapel Cemetery in Jackson County... Hugh (15 June 1802 - 24 April 1871), Milly Templeton Dickenson, wife of Hugh Dickenson (28 Dec 1882, 86 yrs, 1 mon, 11 days; Rebecca Dickerson (sic), wife of Griffith Dickerson (sic) died 22 Aug 1860 in the 75th year of her age. The only information known on the children: Jerusha (14 May 1833 - 8 Dec 1910) married William Valentine MURPHY (14 Feb 1829 - 6 May 1901)...had 5 kids: James Randolph, Lucy Ann, Josephine Elizabeth, Charles M., and Mary Angeline Tabitha. All of the kids appear to have been born in Shasta County. Thanks in advance for your time, Jack K. Templeton

    1. [CASHASTA] Looking for Descendants of Enos George Mack
    2. Looking for Descendants of Enos George Mack, son of Pierson Coleman Mack [born 06 March 1815, NY] and unknown wife. About 10 years or so ago when I was researching at the DeWitt Historical Society in Ithaca, NY I found, in the Mack file, a letter written by a grand daughter of Enos dated 1958: Mrs. Marie Young, 2175 Walden Street, Redding, CA.. I am hoping there are still some other descendants in this area researching their Mack roots, also. Unfortunately, at the time I did not copy the letter and when I wrote later to get a copy, they could not find this letter. Apparently someone "borrowed" it. I am not descended from Enos but I am trying to help someone who thinks she is. I have very little on this branch of the Macks. Olive Hoffman OBRoots@aol.com Sun City, CA
