This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Had to put it all aside after my last query last night; other things pending. With a lot of help out of Kansas I have already covered some of the things you suggested and thus have those answers - none of which give me any info on Josephine. I have also been able to obtain some information from the extensive files at the Kansas State Historical Society - they have boxes and boxes and boxes of family informaiton. In fact, the more one searches, the more repositories one finds for a collection of the Haldeman-Julius family and the Adams connection (Hull House in Chicago) to Anna Marcet Haldeman (-Julius)... too numerous to try to track and since many do not have e-mail or want to charge a small fortune just to search - it is a non doable thing for me. One can believe about 1/2 of what one finds anywhere on the web-sites or in newspapers; they only knew what little was fed to them; even the Historical Society in Girard had questions: I knew more about "Joey" than they did; they had to come to certain conclusions about her which were totally incorrect. I had the real data here in b&w because I researched it. All this was begun simply because I was trying to find out where in Switzerland the Wettsteins came from - I still do not know. So anything found on "Joey" I take with a grain of salt and try to follow up as much as I can. Because of this companionate marriage, articles about her abound all over the country. It really made the headlines as did the specualtion about who she was, who were her parents, etc - Emmanuel (mostly) and wife fed the press a line of bull you would not believe. Josephine was never adopted by the Haldeman-Julius couple - the parents (Jacob and Pearl Wettstein) were coal miners in KS as were most in! the area and unable to care for all the children. She was only a ward of them and at some point in time choose to use their surnames as her own. No legal documentation ever done/found to prove otherwise. Henry and Alice always thought of her as their sister; one piece of documentation found in the files in KS state that if either one ever found out Joey was not their real sister, they would be heart broken. Anyway, have to get back to the pressing things at hand - thanks for your help. I want to get back to this asap.
