Oakland Tribune Saturday, June 16, 1928 Oakland, California U.C. Student Missing Five Days, Seen By Hunters Fled Into Timbers of Mt. Lassen at Approach, Declare Searchers RED BLUFF, June 16,----William J. KAUFMAN,22, of San Francisco, missing since last Monday in Mount Lassen National Volcanic Park, was seen late yesterday afternoon by a party of searchers from Young Brothers Construction Camp, according to word received here today from Mineral, at the entrance to the park. Clarence Young and Ed Crowe, with two women companions, reported seeing KAUFMAN in upper Hot Springs valley, about 12 miles northeast of Mineral on the southwest approach road to Lassen Park. While the women watched the road, Young and Crowe started down the slope toward KAUFMAN, about two miles distant. When the youth saw the men approaching he turned and fled into the timber at the foot of Mount Lassen close by, they said. TIMBER SEARCHED FOR MISSING YOUTH Following this report, searchers began combing the timber in efforts to locate the missing man. KAUFMAN, son of Emanuel KAUFMAN of San Francisco, was said to be suffering from a nervous breakdown resulting from over-study while attending University of California. Escaping Sunday from a rest home at Berkeley, he made his way to Mineral and applied Monday for work at the headquarters of the park service. Shortly afterward park employees discovered the young man had left camp and started up the entrance road to the park. Searching parties have since been endeavoring to find him. Emanuel KAUFAMN. The youth’s father, who has offered a reward for finding the missing man, and Ralph KAUFMAN, a brother, are aiding the searchers. TRACKS LEADINMG TO MUD POTS FOUND. Olin Hampton, veteran guide, today led a searching party into the Bum Pass Hell region of Lassen Volcano Park. The posse was organized after the discovery by Hampton of a fresh trail leading into the heart of the volcanic park. The posse started its search for the missing youth at a “mud pot.” Where tracks indicated that he had narrowly escaped falling into the boiling pool. Residents of Mineral and Westwood, towns nearest the scene of young KAUFMANN’S disappearance, express grave doubt that the boy will be found alive. They point out that he went into the volcano district with no food or camping equipment, and the country is one that is considered hazardous in the extreme to persons unfamiliar with its topography.
