(Sal) Vernali, a well-known Peninsula band-leader, died Monday at Kaiser Hospital, South San Francisco. A native of Connecticut and resident of Millbrae, Vernali had led “Sal’s Little Big Band” for many years, playing the music for Millbrae senior citizen dances and for other functions around the area. He also was a retired machinist and a member of Machinists Union Local 68. “He gave a lot of his time and love to the people who came to our dances,” Millbrae Park and Recreation Department Coordinator Julie Hughes said. “He would come down from the bandstand and dance with people and get them involved, and often brought the refreshments.” Of his death, she said “This was a great shock to us.” She said Vernali had a history of heart trouble and was taken to Kaiser Sunday with what she thought was his second heart attack. He had played a dance Saturday night in San Bruno, staying up late as usual, she said. Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Millbrae; two sons, Tom and Ron; a daughter, Diane Koenig; a brother, Sebastian Vernali; and 10 grandchildren. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Chapel of the Highlands, Millbrae. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church, Millbrae, with entombment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.
