Mermon, an El Granada resident for about a decade, died at his home Oct. 18 following a battle with cancer. He was 82. Mr. Mermon was born in San Francisco and was the youngest of 11 children. He grew up in the city, and served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to the area and worked as a cab driver, and then became a professional painter for the city of Daly City. Whatever buildings in the city needed to be painted, interior or exterior - from gyms to city governmental structures - Mr. Mermon was the man for the job, for many years until retirement. Mr. Mermon was a devoted member of the Crocker Masonic Temple in Daly City for more than 40 years. He also liked to fish, and was devoted to family, caring for his elderly mother toward the end of her life. "He was a very good man. Very loyal," said his stepdaughter Kathleen Alcayaga of Cromberg, Calif. "He was a mountain of strength. A very determined man with a heart of gold," said stepdaughter Jeannine LaGrill of Pacifica. And, she added, he had "an awesome sense of humor." "He will be very missed," added Alcayaga. Mr. Mermon was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Frances Mermon, who died in 2000. He is survived by his companion, Kay Cesare of Pacifica, who, said Alcayaga, was "not only a companion, she was a caregiver and a friend." He is also survived by his stepchildren and their spouses, Michael and Faye Martin of Pacifica, Kathleen and Robert Alcayaga of Cromberg, Calif., Bonnie Winn of Clearlake Park, Calif. and Jeannine and John La Grill of Pacifica. And he is survived by 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Inurnment will be private. Wednesday, October 27, 2004 Half Moon Bay Review and Pescadero Pebble
