Hesketh, who with his wife, Mary, lived in Half Moon Bay for 36 years, died peacefully at his home in Lacey, Wash., on Sept. 18 at age 82. Mr. Hesketh was born in Cleveland, on Nov. 4. 1921. He was a World War II veteran and worked for the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring in 1976. While living in Half Moon Bay, Mr. Hesketh was very active in the community. He served as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner for the city of Half Moon Bay, on the board of directors of the Coastside Opportunity Center, and as an officer with American Legion Post 474 in Princeton. He also served on the board of directors of the United Way of San Mateo County and on the board of the San Mateo County Mental Health Association. In leisure time, Mr. Hesketh enjoyed bird watching, hiking, tennis, reading and lapidary work. "He shared his love of the outdoors with everyone and believed strongly in its preservation," said his family. He loved volunteering on science field trips with Half Moon Bay High School. "Jim had the ability to make everyone feel welcome, important and special," the family said. Mr. Hesketh is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Hesketh, children Kathy Hesketh of Davis, Jim Hesketh of Mountain Ranch, Calif., Frank Hesketh of Olympia, Wash. and John Hesketh of Watsonville, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and other relatives and friends. He also leaves sisters Mary Weisbarth of Mesa, Ariz., and Peg Fitzgerald of Fort Worth, Texas, and brother John Hesketh of Birmingham, Ala. Family noted Mr. Hesketh saying, "I have no regrets; I've been around the world, I've been married to the same wonderful woman for 56 years and my kids turned out fine." Mr. Hesketh had requested to be cremated, and his cremains will be inurned at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a local hospice.
