Mr. Barsuglia attended schools in Half Moon Bay and joined the Navy at age 17. World War II was raging, and he served his Navy term on an aircraft carrier, stationed in the South Pacific. Back home after the war, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a postal clerk in Half Moon Bay for 35 years. "He was a very outgoing person," said his daughter, Vera Vaz of Half Moon Bay. "He loved people." Mr. Barsuglia is preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Rita, who died in 1992. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Vera and Joe Vaz of Half Moon Bay, grandson and wife Andy and Morgan Vaz of Stockton, and stepgreat-grandchildren Alex and Tanner Vaz, also of Stockton. He is also survived by his brothers Albert and Charles Barsuglia of Half Moon Bay, and brother Julio Barsuglia of El Granada. Visitation and a vigil service were held on Tuesday, Oct. 12. A funeral Mass will be celebrated today, Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Pillar Church in Half Moon Bay. When he was 5, his family moved to Montara. He attended Farallone View Elementary School in Montara and Half Moon Bay High School, graduating in 1969.He spent his youth surfing on the coast, and later worked as a bartender at the Montara Inn, a family business run by his parents Harold and Norma Detrick, before honing his skills as a carpenter. He worked as a carpenter for the last 30 years, mostly on the Coastside.Two years ago, Mr. Detrick moved to Redwood City, where he formed a community self-help group called the "Free Thinkers.""He was a nice guy and a good friend to others," said Mr. Detrick's brother, Paul Detrick, of Montara. Mr. Marback was a native of Cincinnati. He worked for 42 years as an electrical engineer with Cincinnati Bell. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps in the European theater, and flew in more than 30 missions during his service. His many awards included the Eastern European Theater ribbon, four Bronze Stars, the Air Medal with three oak clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon his retirement, he moved to California to be near family. Mr. Marback loved sweets like ice cream and blueberry pie. After retiring, he volunteered at local hospitals for 15 years, including seven years at Seton. "He was a kind, gracious and quiet man, full of humility," said his daughter, Barbara Guenther of Alameda. She added that her father often provided valuable help to friends and neighbors. "He could fix anything and did so for all he knew, from refrigerators to radios, TVs, cars and lawnmowers," she said. Mr. Marback is preceded in death by two sisters, Geneva Herbener and Gertrude Whittaker. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie Marback of Half Moon Bay, his daughters Judy Brewer of Half Moon Bay and Barbara Guenther of Alameda, and grandchildren Heidi and Becky Brewer and Charles Guenther. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the Community United Methodist Church at 777 Miramontes St. in Half Moon Bay. Sequera, a fourth-generation Coastsider and 44-year resident of Half Moon Bay, died Sept. 27 at age 63 at her home, following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Stockton, Mrs. Sequera worked as a travel consultant for 24 years, including the last 10 years with Escapades Worldwide Travel in Half Moon Bay. She herself loved to travel, and was known for taking her family, particularly her grandchildren, on memorable vacations including yearly trips to Disneyland, jaunts to Hawaii and cruises. "She spoiled (her grandchildren) with limousines," said her longtime close friend, Stacey Reimche of Escapades Travel, whose two children were Mrs. Sequera's godchildren. According to her family, Mrs. Sequera was devoted to family, friends, and her community, a caring and giving person who touched many lives. She was involved with many organizations, including local Portuguese organizations UPPEC, SPRSI and the I.D.E.S. Society. Mrs. Sequera is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Alvin Sequera, who died in November 2003. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Sequera of Dublin and Diel (and husband Steven) Hutchins of Half Moon Bay, and adored grandchildren Allie Denyko, Danielle Hutchins, Morgan Hutchins and Gunner Anthony. Mrs. Sequera is also survived by her sister, Antoinette Bertolotti of Tracy, and brother Antone "Butch" Coelho of Oakdale, and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and godchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 30 at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church in Half Moon Bay, followed by private interment in Tracy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Coastside Adult Day Health Center, or to a cancer-related charity of choice. Mrs. Szeghy was characterized by her resilience and her refusal to passively accept what life brought her. She was born during a flu epidemic, and lived through the Great Depression and World War II. "Claire was part of that great generation that did not let life's events stop them from living and always rose to the occasion when times became a struggle," said her daughter, Claire Ann Sullivan Bennington of Montara. "To her, life had been good. She was a gracious, beautiful and generous lady and we will miss her love and humor." Mrs. Szeghy was born in San Francisco on Feb. 8, 1918. She lived there throughout her life until the late 1970s, when she relocated to Sunnyvale upon her retirement from the San Francisco water department, where she had worked for 10 years as an accountant. She also devoted time to being a homemaker, and worked for her husband Leo Sullivan's contracting business. She was married twice, to Leo Sullivan from 1939 to 1972, and to Thomas Szeghy from the mid-1970s to 1988. Both preceded her in death. "When she was met with great adversity, she acted instead of reacted," said her daughter. Mrs. Szeghy enjoyed traveling, with Ireland, Sonoma County and Leningrad being favorite destinations. She had moved to Montara seven years ago to be near her daughter, and at Three Bells for the past four years where, said her daughter, she was "lovingly cared for by the staff, her extended family." Mrs. Szaghy is also preceded in death by her parents, sister Alice Wilhite, and brothers Francis, Lester, Robert and Jack Dunne. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Leo Sullivan Jr. and Barbara Costello Sullivan of Palm Desert, Dennis Joseph and Diane Berlien Sullivan of Whidbey Island, Wash., and Claire Ann Sullivan Bennington and James Jay Bennington of Montara. She was also a devoted grandmother to Monica (and husband David) Nordquist, Maureen (and husband Robert) Oliphant and Melissa Ann Sullivan (and partner Tina Autry), all of Southern California, Brendan Sullivan (and wife Melissa Sather), and Erik Sullivan, of Washington, and Zachary, Cynthia and James K. Bennington, all of Montara. She is also survived by her beloved great-grandchildren Gregory, Amanda, Scott and Matthew Nordquist, Kacie and Haden Oliphant and Mara Sullivan. Services have been held. MANLEY to recover damages in the sum of $10,000 for injuries received by plaintiff when run into by an automobile driven by Manley. The complaint recites that in last April he was seated in a buggy and riding to the City of San Mateo when defendant came in the opposite direction, riding at a high rate of speed without having lamps on the machine and ran into him, throwing him to the street. He suffered severe injury, having to remain in the hospital for some time. The complaint alleges that the injuries were received by him through the careless and negligent driving of defendant. He also asks for the loss of his salary during the time he was laid up, doctor fees, medicine, nurse hire, etc., amounting to $2800, making a total of $12,800. The papers on appeals from the justice court of the Second Township in the civil case of Charlotte WITTS vs A.C. JONES have been filed in the County Clerk's office. The case was brought to recover the sum of $60 for rent of a house owed by her in Burlingame. Defendant proved that the landlord had violated the contract in not making certain repairs on the premises. Judge Lamb of Burlingame, before whom the case was tried, decided in favor of defendant and against plaintiff. The case will be retried in the Superior Court. The estate of Agnes Howard HAYNE, who died in Italy July 12, 1912, was distributed Monday. The value of the estate is $285,383.51, and the husband Stephen Duncan HAYNE, is the sole heir. Mrs. HAYNES did not make any provision for her daughter, Agnes Margaretta HAYNE, and she said in her will that her husband would properly provide for the child. Mrs. HAYNE's estate consists of 31 parcels of land which are part of the vast Howard-Bowie holdings in San Mateo and Hillsborough. Our local baker, A. VOGLER, proprietor of the Vista Grande Bakery and Grocery, is, giving everybody quite a treat in the way of a Christmas present by selling 30 bread tickets for $1 from December 15 to December 31. The young ladies who attended Miss Olga OTTOBONI's birthday party November 15, returned with a surprise party Saturday evening November 29. The evening was spent in dancing, singing and games, and proved to be an enjoyable one. Later, a grand supper was served, which consisted of many dainty dishes. ** Fined and Sent to Jail P. BANDONI, a wealthy hog rancher of Colma, was taken to the county jail Tuesday of last week to serve a term of ten days and also to pay of fine of $150. BANDONI has been fighting for several months against the enforcement of the ordinance abolishing hog ranches, but finally surrendered and was sentenced by Justice of the Peace McCormick of San Mateo. He is reputed to be work $50,000, all of which he gained in the traffic in hogs. - Redwood City Democrat. ** BUILDING CONTRACTS The following building contacts have been filed in the County Recorder's Office: S. BANDONI, the wealthy hog rancher of Colma, who was sentenced to 10 days in the county jail for violating the county health ordinance was paroled Tuesday after losing 50 pounds during his eight days incarceration. Mrs. BANDONI, who had been a constant visitor at the jail, pleaded with the authorities for her husband's release and the officers who sent BANDONI to jail for persistently refusing to move his hogs were finally moved by the woman's tears and ordered her husband's release. ** Pioneer Woman Passes Mrs. Miranda E. MILLS, one of the wealthiest woman of San Mateo county, died here Saturday morning . Deceased was a native of Vermont and came to California in 1850. She was 81 years of age. Mrs. MILLS is survived by a son, Burleigh Murray MILLS, of Beresford, and a daughter, Mrs. Carrie A. JURY, of San Mateo. The funeral was held Monday. ** Killed by Train Benjamin CASTRO, a gardener employed on the Robert OXNARD estate, was killed by a Southern Pacific freight train at Redwood City early Wednesday morning . He was crossing the tracks at Jefferson street, when the rear end of the train, which was being switched, backed into him. He was a native of Guam, 43 years old, and leaves a widow and four minor children. ** PACIFIC COAST SIDE What Our Neighbors Along the Pacific's Shore Have Been Doing, Are Doing and Will Do Miss Daisy McCORMICK of Pescadero is visiting her aunt, Mrs. Joseph AZEVEDO. Mrs. E. SUTHERLAND, who has been residing in Los Angeles, has returned to Moss Beach to remain. G.W. BAKER has been plowing the Jakobs ranch at Farrallone preparatory to planting it to potatoes. Miss Josie MOWRY visited her cousin, Mrs. BLOOM, at the St. Rafael Hotel in San Francisco last week. Miss Marianna GAY and sister, Mrs. Hattie S. SIZER of Omaha, Neb., is building a cottage to the north of the STEELE property, Moss Beach. Mr. SIZER and family will make their home there just as soon as the residence is completed. Mrs. James MORAN, once a resident of Half Moon Bay, died in San Francisco Friday, November 28. The MORANS were among the first settlers. Deceased was the mother of Gussie and Victor GUERERO. On account of the steady increase in the number of school children during the past few months, the trustees of the Triangle district will have to secure another teacher for next year. There are 60 children in the Montara district. C.M.L. NELSON, a recent arrival in Montara, is instructing boys and girls in physical culture, conducting charmed with the Coast Side and expresses a determination to remain here permanently if his business interests justify it. Miss Rose CARDOZA was married in San Francisco last Wednesday to Joseph BERGLUND. Mrs. BERGLUND is one of Half Moon Bay's most popular and highest esteemed young ladies and has the best wishes of a large number of friends. At this time, when the automobile boulevard is uppermost in our minds, we are again reminded by M.B. JOHNSON's return from Mexico City that it was he, more than anyone else, who pushed to success the boulevard bond proposition. - Coast Side Comet Dr. J.S. According to the complain the couple was married at Oakland in May 1900. There are no children as a result of the marriage. The husband charges his wife with desertion, alleging that she left him in 1907. The East San Mateo Land Co. plaintiff in the case of the East San Mateo Land Co. vs. the Southern Pacific Co., has filed a notice that it will appeal to the Supreme Court from the decision rendered by Judge George H. Buck on October 30, 1913, in favor of the defendant. Judge Buck has appointed H.W. SCHABERG inheritance tax appraiser of the estate of James CROWE, deceased. Mary Betts WEST has brought suit against Juanita BETTS to have the marriage of her son, Walter E. BETTS, and defendant annulled. The plaintiff alleges that her son and Juanita Betts were united in marriage at Hollister on January 4, 1912, that young BETTS was only 17 years old at the time of the marriage and that she did not give her consent in writing or verbally to the marriage, and therefore asks that said contract be annulled. There are no children as a result of the , neither is there any community projects. Edward KNIGHT has brought foreclosure proceedings against the Hensley Smith Co. and others to recover the sum of $22,062.50. The property on which the mortgage is to be foreclosed consists of 204 acres of land in the San Pedro valley near the Pacific Ocean. It was bought by the company and subdivided. KLOTTS, one of Daly City's well respected citizens, arrived this week from her native town in Germany, and will make her home here. Burton, the four-year old son of Mrs. Katherine CAIRNS, underwent an operation at Mary's Help Hospital Monday, having the adenoids and tonsils removed. The little boy is getting along fine. Mrs. Ben HANSEN, who resides near the west end of Los Angeles avenue, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital Thursday to undergo quite a serious operation, affecting the head near one of her ears. George FOWLER, the tool sharpener, whose shop is opposite the Home of Peace Cemetery, left last Friday for Portland, Oregon, in response to a call to the bedside of his mother, who is very sick. Julius NELSON, who is well and favorably known in Daly City, has accepted a position with the Postal Telegraph and Cable Co. of Portland, Oregon, where is he is nicely situated. His family remains here, however, so we are not likely to lose him entirely. He has ordered the Record sent to his address, wishing to keep posted on affairs at home. Mrs. B.E. GARDENIER has returned from a five months visit to her old home in Kansas City, Missouri, where she had a very delightful time with relatives and many old-time friends of childhood days. On her return she stopped two days at Denver, Colorado, where she enjoyed a splendid Rocky Mountain snow storm, it being a real novelty compared to her California home, where it never snows. Mrs. GARDENIER is one of Daly City's most excellent ladies, who has been missed by her many friends. ** PACIFIC COAST SIDE What Our Neighbors Along the Pacific's Shore Have Been Doing, Are Doing and Will Do Frederick NOCCELLI is building a big barn on his ranch near Salada Beach. Mrs. Wm. FAHEY of Salada Beach visited friends in San Francisco the fore part of last week. Mrs. George H. FLINT of San Francisco spent several days in Moss Beach visiting her husband. A. MATSON, section foreman on the Ocean Shore, left Tuesday for a six months' visit to his parents at Malmo, Sweden. A. BEAL of San Francisco has purchased the Harrington house at Brighton Beach and will reside there permanently. Mr and Mrs. E.C. GLADDEN of Sissons were in Half Moon Bay last Thursday visiting their sons, who are attending high school. Frank BENNETT of Pescadero died Thursday, November 27. The body was taken to Half Moon Bay for interment in the local cemetery. Conductor HOUCK, who broke his leg some time ago while at work on the Ocean Shore Railroad, has returned to his home at Half Moon Bay after spending a number of weeks in a San Francisco hospital. Miss Grace FRANCIS has given up her position as cashier in the meat market and has resumed her studies in the stenographic course after having been out two months. TAGGART is reported as improving from his illness. He is at St. Luke's Hospital, San Francisco. Frank DURHAM has returned to his home in Verdi, Nevada, where he is engaged in farming. Mr. DURHAM was called here recently on account of the illness of his mother, Mrs. Martha DURHAM, who is now greatly improved. The home of Dr and Mrs. J.L. ROSS was the scene of a pretty party on Friday night, when Miss Blanche ROSS entertained a large number of her schoolmates, in honor of her 12th birthday. Games and dancing furnished the diversions, and a supper of dainties with a beautiful birthday caked, closed the affair. Judge James HANNON appeared on the street Friday for the first time since he was struck with an automobile and fractured his leg, He was greeted on all sides by his many friends, who are glade to see him out again. Ulysses GOVAN, of Atlanta, Ga., is trying to locate his father, Ulysses GOVAN, Sr., who once lived in Redwood but later moved to Mayfield. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Mr. McGOVERN(sic) Sr., will kindly notify this office. Wilbur DOXESE, treasurer of the Christian Endeavor Society, entertained the members of the society at his home Saturday last in honor of the anniversary of his birth. The occasion was a very enjoyable one. About twenty-five persons attended. E.G. HAMILTON, the local collector for the telephone company, has resigned his position and has accepted the position of assistant jailor under Sheriff A.B. LANGFORD of Santa Clara County. George W. LOVIE was operated upon at the Peninsula hospital at Palo Alto last Monday by Dr. ROSS, Dr. WILLIAMS and Dr. CHAPIN. The operation was a very serious one, and was successfully performed. Mr. LOVIE is improving nicely and will recover, although it will be some little time before he will be able to leave the hospital. ** Heirs Sue for Accounting The estate of John T. DOYLE, the pioneer lawyer whose shrewdness in making the Southern Pacific take a 50-year lease through his Menlo Park estate instead of a bill of sale just netted his heirs $100,000, is the center of an interesting contest which started Monday before Judge George H. Robert KIRK has commenced an action against L.P. PALMTAG to recover the sum of $1645.80 on three promissory notes. Plaintiff also asks for interest and costs of suit. E.D. CONNOLLEY has brought suit against Peter FABER to secure possession of 250 acres of land at Portola known as the Hatfield place, leased to the defendant last December for a period of one year, said lease to expire on November 30, 1913. Plaintiff asks for the sum of $162.50 balance due to the last quarter of the rent. CONNOLLEY claims that FABER violated the terms of the lease and asks the court for restitution and possession of the property. Pietro VIANINIO has brought suit against his wife, Louise VIANINIO, for an interlocutory decree of divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty and desertion. The parties were married at Menlo Park on March 23, 1913. There are no children as a result of the marriage, and no community property. Mrs. VIANINIO was under age at the time of her marriage and is still under 18 years. She received the written consent of her parent to marry plaintiff. The Calara Valley Realty Company brought suit against C.B. SMITH and others to recover the sum of $729.30, a balance due on open book account. The complaint alleges that wares, merchandise, to the amount of over $900 were delivered to defendants during the four years past. John DYRE and Jane DYER (Different spellings as printed) have applied for the adoption of Goldie FORREST, aged 11 years. According to the petition the little girl was adopted in the State of Illinois three years ago by Edward FORREST and some time after he deserted and abandoned the child, who has been in the custody of Mr and Mrs. DYER for the past eight months. Judge Buck on Thursday granted an interlocutory decree of divorce to Nora D. SCHUYLER from her husband, Samuel D. SCHUYLER, on statutory grounds. By the terms of the decree the custody of the minor child was given to the mother and she was allowed the sum of $25 a month for the minor, $75 for attorney fees and costs in the sum of $10.50. John D. WILLARD is the attorney for the plaintiff. All papers in the suit of the City of Palo Alto against the Christie Machinery Company and others were transferred this week from this county. The case was filed at San Jose last August. According to the complain the machinery company entered into an agreement with the city to install machinery for a well, and after securing and installing a motor and pump the trustees would not accept them, declaring they were not according to the agreement. The plaintiff asks that the machinery be rejected and that it be given judgment of $1088.70, the amount paid defendant and also asks for damages in the sum of $2320.50. DAVIS Ovita Josephine, wife of Judge John F. DAVIS, died at her home in Easton, Saturday, November 22, 1913, aged 27 years, 1 month and 11 days. The deceased was a most estimable young lady, a native of California, and the daughter of George W. and Elizabeth D. LEATHE, and her death will be mourned by many sincere friends. The funeral took place Tuesday morning in San Francisco from Gray's chapel, Geary and Devisadero streets. ** REDWOOD CITY RUMBLINGS Never before in the history of Redwood City has there been so many mushrooms brought to town as there were this week. The warm rains have caused a great growth of the fungi on the foothills near town. ROSCO of Brighton Beach has decided to engage in the growing of mushrooms on a large scale and he is preparing a number of buildings for the same. R. McDONALD of Salada Beach was in the northern part of the state last week looking after ranch property. Mrs. McDONALD, who has been in a city hospital for the past two weeks, has returned home. W.J. FAIRBURN on Montara reports that he planted a 10 cent package of pumpkin seed, from which he harvested 150 pounds of pie fruit and from one sack of potatoes planted he received seven.
