Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UW.2ADI/1988 Message Board Post: I hope someone can help me. I am hoping to find an obituary for Aloysius Farrell, who died April 30, 1965 and was buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery as he was a veteran of WW I. The SSDI lists only "California" as his last residence. The California Death Index lists "San Francisco" county as his place of death. The San Francisco Library checked both the Examiner and Chronicle for an obit without success. I wonder if he died in a San Francisco hospital, but lived in another part of the area. I hope some kind person can help me find an obituary for him. I am hoping to discover if he had a wife or family or if he is the end of the line. I also wonder if Golden Gate National Cemetery might have a record of his last place of residence or some information about family. Has anyone gotten information from that cemetery? Thanks in advance for any help.

Owing to the probable lateness that the men would return home, a ruse was made in which a telephone message was sent saying that a man was there who wished to buy or lease the Biggio Park. This worked splendidly, so, of course there was no hitch in the arrangements. So overjoyed at the surprise was "Papa John" that he never thought of the prospective buyer until all were seated at the table that was laden with the most delicious Italian delicacies, including of course, raviolis, abalone, mussels, crab salad, chicken, etc., and then he inquired. Jim DOWNEY had been acquainted with the ruse and at once proceeded to offer a dollar for the property that worth several thousand. This caused a great laugh of course and no one joined in more heartily that the grand man in whose honor the dinner was given. Following the sumptuous repast, there was music and dancing until the midnight hour and every minute of the time was joy supreme. ** REALTY TRANSFERS W.C. Boock to W.F. Dreyer. PLYMIRE, and through the courtesy of that genial gentleman was shown through the institution. Perfect nearness, the most essential thing in a first-class hospital, was noticed in every detail. The operating rooms, the wards, private rooms, dinning rooms and kitchen, all showed perfect order, including the well arranged office and reception rooms. While not familiar with such things, the equipment such as X-ray, apparatus, surgical instruments, sterilizing facilities and all else that seemed essential, were unquestionably first-class and the very best that can be procured. Dr. PLYMIRE is naturally very proud of this hospital and well he may be, for it equals anything in San Francisco. In fact, it has many advantages over the large hospitals in the insuring of better care and is more reasonable in price. ** SAN MATEO BOYS VANISH The two sons of A.L. It was on such a trip that they vanished, leaving absolutely no clew as to where they went. ** The San Mateo Board of Supervisors met in an adjourned meeting Monday with all members present except BLACKBURN. A.G.C. HAHN resigned as a member of the Mosquito Commission and Harold P. BROWN of Anthony was appointed in his stead. The remitter in the case of the E.W. McLELLAN Co against the East San Mateo Land Company has been received at the County Clerk's office from the Supreme Court. The opinion rendered by that tribunal on December 29, 1913, reverses the judgment of the lower court and gives appellant his costs on appeal. Plaintiff brought the action some time ago in the Superior Court of this county to recover the sum of $10,727.19 for material furnished and work done for the land company at San Mateo. The lower court gave a judgment for defendant and plaintiff at one appealed the case to the Supreme Court. The law firm of Denson, Cooley, Denson and D.W. Burbank has withdrawn as the attorneys for L.S. READING, the defendant in the case of Thomas BRADY against L.S. READING. Judge Buck has rendered an opinion in the matter of the settlement of the report and statement of the trustees of the POPE minors, viz: "In the matter of the settlement of the accounts of the trustees of the POPE minors. The accounts of the trustees, John J. DOYLE and Edmund M. DOYLE, presented herein, will be approved. There may be, but of that I am not sure, some small loss to the POPE minors, resulting if at all from errors in bookkeeping, but in any event it would be a very small sum of money. The trustees of the DOYLE estate, by my interpretation of the will of John T. DOYLE, have treated liberally the POPE minors, in fact these minors have received more than their share of the property from the DOYLE estate. There has been no evidence presented to warrant me finding any bad faith or breach of trust on the part of these trustees, and there is nothing to warrant me in finding that these trustees should be removed." PANNELLI having sold his grocery store to his brother-in-law, Tony MILO. Miss Isabell GLORIANNA, a prominent Daly City belle, while gathering flowers Sunday, accidentally fell, straining her knee near the wireless telegraph station. Urbono GRANNUCCI, of the pioneer mercantile establishment of E. BELLI & Co., Colma, has returned from a three months visit at Lucca per Marlia, Toscany, Italy. Mrs. N. MEETH was in the city one day last week visiting her old schoolmate of Marinett, Wisconsin, who now is Mrs. Esther ADLER, whose husband is in the Mission work in San Francisco. There is an exceedingly happy home in Colma since Saturday, when Mrs. B.W. Haubrich presented her husband with a fine and bright nine-pound baby boy - a companion for the little sister, Sylvia. The cigarette smoked by a San Mateo society belle during application for a marriage license could hardly have been kindled by the spark of love. Miss Susie Leonard of Daly City, who teaches at the San Bruno school has returned to her position after an absence of several weeks in the hospital, where she underwent a capital operation. Mrs. E.I. WOODMAN, wife of the genial editor of the South City Enterprise, came over from South San Francisco Wednesday and spent the day with her daughter, who resides in the Crocker tract. The Record is not running a matrimonial bureau, but there is a nice looking young man named EADE at the Pride of the Hill market, who, when asked for a news item, replied: "Yes, tell your readers I want a wife." Louis BACCIGALUPPI who lives at 23 Bismarch street was riding with the Italian and was also thrown off and badly bruised, though not seriously injured. Mrs. Williard L. McKAY of Los Angeles avenue gave a kitchen shower last Wednesday to Mrs. Ernest FERGUSON, an old resident of Daly City and a sister of Mrs. Jess SHEPHERD. The community property consists of lots 47 and 48 block A, Mission Tract, Daly City. Plaintiff asks that the property be divided equally between himself and wife. Henry Ward Brown is the attorney for Mr. HOPPER. (HOOPER/HOPPER as printed) ** "Cupid Eleanor Falvey" Monday evening's Call had a fine picture of Miss Eleanor FALVEY, the popular and pretty deputy in County Clerk NASH's office, who has been named "Cupid Eleanor" on account of the large number of marriage licenses that she has issued. "Runaway couples are my specialty," says Miss FALVEY. "I just delight in being taken into their confidence. It is all so very romantic, you know. Oh course, they expect the secret to be kept, and I respect their wishes." ** THE JURORETTES OF SAN MATEO COUNTY Eleven Are on List From Which Next Grand Jury Is to Be Selected The legality of the jurorettes of the recent Grand Jury of San Mateo county and the right of women to serve as jurors were attacked Saturday before Superior Judge George Buck of Redwood City by William Hoff COOK, attorney for Auditor W.H. UNDERSHILL, against who an accusation was returned. A few moments after COOK announced that he would test the legality of jurorettes, Judge Buck selected a list of eleven women and nineteen men from which will be drawn the next grand jury. Cook attacked the validity of the accusation on the grounds that men only can serve as grand jurors and that the auditor did not keep his books and records as required by law. The UNDERHILL case was continued for one week. The auditor's counsel is prepared to take the case before the State Supreme Court to test the validity of women jurors. The list of the grand jury venire, which will report in court probably next November follows: WOMEN Katie WIGHT, Colma; Lillian G. MacBAIN, Lomita Park; Charlotte DIGGLES, Lomita Park; Carrie A. AZEVEDO, summoned - $3.00 ** GRAND JURY PRESENTS BOQUET TO JOE NASH The report of the late Grand Jury filed recently with Judge Buck, had the following to say regarding the office of the County Clerk. "The office of the County Clerk probably has ore details than any other office within our county as this officer has to act as clerk of the Board of Supervisors, clerk of the Superior Court and has charge of naturalizations, hunting licenses, registrations and the holding of all county elections." The report goes on to state that several recommendations of the precious Grand Juries had been carried out by Clerk Nash, adding much to the efficiency of his office. Fees amounting to $4,904.93 were collected during the year 1913, which is a remarkable showing considering the fact that while the clerk's office is not a fee office, thousands of pages of recording have been done for which no fee can be collected. When the above amount is compared with the fees collected in 1909, amounting to $3,372, one has some idea of the great increase of business of the clerk's office. The report states that but few clerical errors were found by the expert and that the work of the office was well in hand which was not the finding last year. Clerk Nash made a change in his office force early last spring to which he attributes its improved conditions. Judge Buck, in speaking of the County Clerk's good work, expressed himself as follows: "The people of this county are to be congratulated on having men of the Joe Nash type in office. He has proven himself capable, honest and fearless and is always to be found at his post of duty." ** The Board of Supervisors of San Mateo county met Monday with all members present. Liquor Licenses were renewed as follows: Mrs. ARCHIBALD, Belmont Partini Brothers, Colma H.C. CALDWELL, Belmont S. DELLAMAGORRI, San Bruno J. A valuable gold emblem was presented to the retiring past chief companion, Mrs. Margaret PERETTA. Mrs. Rose NEUMAN was give a cut glass punch bowl. The affair was followed by a collation - Examiner ** Arthur BLOMQUIST died at Pescadero last Monday. The deceased was a man of considerable prominence in that section and was generally referred to as "the Apple King." His orchard is one of the largest in the county and contains sixty acres. - Review ** Mike Sheehan Out For Sheriff For a long time it has been generally understood that Michael SHEEHAN, constable for the Second Township and county probation officer, would be a candidate for sheriff, but not until this week has be definitely decided to throw his hat into the ring. Mr. SHEEHAN Has been a resident of San Mateo for twenty-seven years and constable for the Second Township for twelve years, during which time, he has been a faithful official, a terror to evil doers and a friend to the right. Just the sort of man who would make good anywhere. ** PACIFIC COAST SIDE What Our Neighbors Along the Pacific's Shore Have Been Doing, Are Doing and Will Do Mrs. J.A. McCORMICK of Pescadero, accompanied by her daughter Daisy, spent a few days of last week with her brother, Fred JOHNSTON, at Purissima. M.B. WIGGINS is preparing the Sunshine Valley road for a coat of macadam, which will be given it just as soon as the crushed rock can be received from the quarry. G.H. FLINT, for many months in the employ of C.B. SMITH of Moss Beach, will leave shortly for southern Siskiyou, where he will engage in ranching. His wife will go with him. According to the record made by C.B. SMITH at the depot at Half Moon Bay, 15.20 inches of rain fell during the month of January, or an average of over half an inch per day. The total for the season amounts to 26.55 inches. M. LEAZER of Marine View had planted eight varieties of South American fruit trees, which were furnished by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the people in this section will watch with interest this experiment and if successful, many more trees of the same kinds will be planted. Mr and Mrs. C.B. SMITH entertained a number of friends at their home in Moss Beach last Sunday, it being the occasion of Mrs. SMITH's birthday. A number of persons, who would have been guests from San Francisco were hindered from being present on account of the storm. However a number of Moss Beach Beach friends made the occasion joyous. Miss Annie BROWN and Emiel BEDENBECK of Oakland visited Mr and Mrs Charles T. NYE, several days during the past week. Mr BEDENBECK is a regular visitor to Moss Beach when the low tides fall on Saturdays and Sundays. He is an expert fisherman and always gets his share when out after eel, abalone and other fish caught at this point. ** Getting Ready Contractor WILLSON, accompanied by Supervisor J.M. FRANCIS, drove up to Montara Wednesday for the purpose of locating a camp to be used by the force of men to be employed in the construction of a boulevard over Montara mountain. He decided that MARTINI's ranch was the best place and will commence operations there, turning the first earth near the barn on that place. The preparations for camp will commence within a few days, bur work on the grading is not expected to be started for about en days yet, as the modern steam shovel on the way from the East are not expected to arrive before that time. Mr. WILLISON has a large contract on hand in Hollister, which he is rushing to completion. He expects to clean up there about the time his shovels get here so that he can give his undivided attention to his work here. He intends to establish another camp at San Pedro and work from both ends of the section at the same time. - Comet ** REDWOOD CITY RUMBLINGS Miss FALVEY, who presides over Cupid's department of the county clerk's office granted a marriage license Friday to a young lady named PEPPER. It does not necessarily follow that the husband's married life will be a hot one. Mrs. H.W. TAGGART, wife of the late Dr. TAGART, on Wednesday received a check for $3000 from Embarkadero Camp, Woodmen of the World, the amount due on a life insurance policy held by the doctor. (Taggart/Tagart as printed) John J. READ Jr. took the government civil service examination for a position in the railway mail service in San Francisco last May. The young man passed a splendid test, standing four from the top of the list. Recently he received an appointment from the post office department in Washington, and was assigned to the Ogden district. His salary for the first year will be $900. He will be raised every year for ten years when he shall have reached the limit, $1900 per annum. Gilbert MOORE and his bride of seventeen who are to walk across the continent in six months for a wager of $3000 were in Redwood City Thursday night, having started on their long journey from San Francisco last Wednesday. They seemed cheerful and full of confidence of making the trip in the required time. The MOORES will keep a southerly route across the continent and expect to make their way by selling postal cards and photographs of themselves and of the Panama Pacific exposition. They each carry knapsacks with extra clothes and provisions. REALTY TRANSFERS S.F. Payne to M. Daba, Lots 2, 3, 4, portion 1, blk 40, Bowie Est Ernr Addn, San Mateo Atlas Land and Con Co to F.W. Mrs. H. FREDERICK, 111 Green Avenue, gave birth to a fine baby boy on the 12th day of this month. Mrs. Margaret KOSS was afflicted last week with a paralytic stroke, leaving one of her eyes very bad. R.B. ROSE, editor of the Chico Tribune, made a visit to his niece, Mrs. Rowland HAMILTON, 127 Peoria Street, Monday evening. Miss Esther O'BRIEN, daughter of Mrs and J.S. O'BRIEN, 115 Green Avenue, has been quite sick, but is well and attending school again. Little Miss Gertrude HENDRICKS celebrated her eighth birthday at her home on Brunswick Street on the 17th inst., with a number of her little schoolmates present. Fritz HANSEN is the happiest individual in Daly City, with that new forty-dollar automobile. He has promised the Record editor a ride and the invitation is being seriously - quite seriously considered. An unidentified man was struck by a south-bound San Mateo electric car near Holy Cross Cemetery about 10 o'clock Sunday night. He was picked up by the car crew and taken to San Mateo, where he was sent to the Red Cross Hospital. He was unconscious and there was nothing to show his identity. He was poorly dressed and was apparently a laborer or tramp. Last Monday was the date designated for the Civil Service examination to fill the position of postmaster of Daly City, made vacant by the resignation of Mrs. Hazel C. RUSSEL. Mrs. Janet Currie CAMPBELL, Samuel CERF and William Wingo BALLENGER took the examination, either of whom would undoubtedly fill the bill and give good service to the patrons of the office. August A. RESKE, who was well and favorably known in Colma, died in San Francisco January 27th and the funeral takes place today, Friday under the auspices of Colma Vista Grande Aerie 1848, F.O.E. of which he was an honored member. He was also a member of Olive Grove, 116, U.A.O.D. The deceased was a native of Germany, aged 54 years, and leaves a wife and four children, Martha, Charles, Elsie and William to mourn his loss. Interment Mount Olivit. Al Green "Took The Cake" A.J. GREEN often demonstrates his foxyness and gets away with it, but on Tuesday evening Mrs. GREEN spoiled one of his prettiest stunts. It seems the Lady Forresters were preparing a nice feed at their hall and about dark, Al met a couple of the ladies with cakes and told them that he had been delegated to assist them, so they filled his arms with the delicious edibles and he at once started for the Civic Betterment League hall, where there was also a big feed that evening. He had not gone far however when Mrs. GREEN emerged from the door of the restaurant across the street and with the assistance of the other ladies rescued all the cakes except three nice ones which helped the Betterment League banquet very much. ** Boy Dies Under Auto With a group of school playmates, Lester BACIGALUPI, aged nine, ran into the street at Twenty-fifth and Valencia last Friday, laughing over his shoulder as he look back, and was killed. The front wheel of an auto driven by Thomas SPELLMAN, a contractor living in Colma, caught the child's foot and the fender knocked him down. Witnesses to the accident say SPELLMAN was driving slowly and that the boy was look backwards rather that in the direction he was going. SPELLMAN took the lad from the street, and Mrs. SPELLMAN, the only other occupant of the car, held him while SPELLMAN hastened to St. Luke's Hospital, near by. Dr. SANDBURY pronounced the child dead on his arrival at the hospital. There were no bruises on the boy's body and Dr. SANDBURY was unable to state whether he had died from shock or a broken neck. SPELLMAN was charged with manslaughter. ** Carl Browne Dies Word was received from Washington of the death there Friday of Carl BROWNE of Calistoga, Sacramento and the world at-large. He died of heart disease. BROWNE was a leader of COXEY's army in the famous march to Washington. Later he married COXEY's daughter. BROWNE for 50 years was one of Californi'a most picturesque figures. He was an artist, printer, writer, publisher, a knight of the open road, a champion of the poor and the weak, a labor patriot and a lover of humanity. For 35 years he attended the sessions of the State Legislature. Every Senator, Assemblyman, attaché and newspaperman in the last generation has had his face drawn by Carl BROWNE. In those years he brought out a daily paper "The Labor Knight." In 1877 BROWNE first sprang into public view by joining himself to Dennis KEARNEY, the sand-lot agitator, who was then making a great anti-Chinese stir. They were partners in a hand-print journal. BROWNE led the first parade of the unemployed through Chicago in 1893 and then became first lieutenant in COXEY's army to the national capitol. General COXEY's daughter divorced him in 1910. In 1906 BROWNE ran for Governor of California on the People's Party ticket, making his campaign from curbstones and soap boxes. ** PACIFIC COAST SIDE What Our Neighbors Along the Pacific's Shore Have Been Doing, Are Doing and Will Do Chas. McCOREY is making some very notable improvements on his house at Granada. Mrs. Margaret HATTABAUGH of Pescadero and E. BURTOLLITO of Half Moon Bay passed away last week. Columbus and Francis O'BRIAN of San Mateo are in Princeton-by-the-Sea visiting their sister Mrs. Alex BONZGANI. H.C.P. MORSE of Half Moon Bay has established an auto stage line between that place and San Mateo, making two trips a day and using a twelve passenger Stanley steamer. Cleaveland GRANGER formerly of Half Moon Bay and Miss Dora SHROUDER of San Francisco were married in the city Monday and left immediately for Oklahoma, where Mr. GRANGER has work in an oil field. Rev. Father A. ANDRIANO, Mrs. Ed CAMPBELL and Phillip GONZALEZ of Half Moon Bay were called to Pescadero Wednesday where they held High Mass over the body of the late Mrs. Joseph FRISCO. Mrs. GRISCO was a native of Ireland, aged 78 years and has lived on the Coast Side since the age of 16 years. Little Gertrude, only child of Mr and Mrs. Charles T. NYE, and who narrowly escaped a fatal scalding nearly a month ago, has convalesced sufficiently to get out into the sunshine when it arrives. The loss of a few freckles by reason of her new face, acquired through a peeling off of the skin after the burning, doesn't worry her a bit. She says she can get some more. **** It's a Good Ad F.R. BARRETT of the Steamer San Juan, which runs between San Francisco and Panama, was at Montara Sunday visiting Harr WAGNER. He is like Capt. JORDAN, who has command of a passenger boat running between San Francisco and Los Angeles. He paid one of the highest compliments that could be paid to any locality, in saying that the 21 street lights at Farallone was one of best advertisements that could be, as it showed that the citizens were up-to-the-minute and believes in leading the procession of progress. Mr. BARRETT stated that hundreds of passengers aboard the San Juan had asked him what place it was and reports that the lights made a fine showing from the ocean and he was trying to picture in his minds eye how 101 street lights would appear. Salada Beach and Brighton Beach are the next places on the Coast Side, Mr. BARRETT, to have lights. Watch for them. - Comet ** REDWOOD CITY RUMBLINGS Harry JACOBSON, formerly a merchant and postmaster here, but now an official of the Frank Tanning Company was in Redwood Tuesday. Miss Ivy WILKINSON, commercial teacher in the South San Francisco high school spent the week end here with her friend Miss Harriet MERRIL. Reports from the Children's Hospital, San Francisco, are to the effect that Harold STEVENS is getting along nicely and will soon be able to return to his school work. Rev. C.H. STEVENS has been quite ill during the past week and his pulpit was filed last Sunday by Rev. Jacob SPOOLMAN, who is here from Kansas with his family, visiting Mrs. SPOOLMAN's parents, Mr and Mrs. W.O. DODGE. Ernest WERDER left Friday with the Mystic Shriners for Truckee to enjoy the winter carnival now in progress at that place. Two hundred and eighty-eight voters have registered up until yesterday according to the figures in the county clerk's office. They were as follows: Republican 179, Progressive 31, Democratic 67, Socialist 4, declined to state politics 3, Prohibition 2, Union Labor 1, Independent 1. The Academic Council of Stanford University granted the Bachelor of Arts degree to fifty-four students who had completed the required amount of work for graduation. Among the number was Miss Petra JOHNSTON Of this city who had been enrolled in the Germanic Language deparment. Miss JOHNSTON will continue her work for another year to secure a higher degree. The civil suit of Lititia GREGG against Marie S. MILLER and Elmer M. MILLER has been transferred from Nevada County to this county for trial. According to the complaint, plaintiff exchanged lot 34, block 19, Crocker Tract and improvements and an insurance policy for a quarter section of land in Nevada County. Plaintiff has discovered that defendants have no title to the property and now ask that the deeds so exchanged be declared null and void. The title to the property in Nevada County is vested in John CALDWELL, Superior Judge of that county, and the State of California. The damage suit of Rosina H. TREADWELL against Dr. N.D. MORRISON of San Mateo has been transferred from San Francisco to this county for trial. The complaint was filed in San Francisco on September 25, 1913 and the case was transferred to the county last Monday. The complaint alleges that on September 28, 1912, the plaintiff fractured the bone of her right arm and called Dr. MORRISON to set the injured limb, that the work was done so negligently and carelessly that the bones were not placed in juxtaposition and therefore did not knit or heal. Some time after the bone became diseased and decayed. Plaintiff lost the entire use of her arm. She asks for damages in the sum of $50,000. Plaintiff also asks for further money in the sum of $1350 expended for surgery, medicines, etc. and for $165 for wages which she would have earned had she the use of her arm, making a total of $51,505.50. GREEN has brought suit in the Superior Court against the South San Francisco Railroad and Power Company to recover damages in the sum of $25,000 for injuries sustained on January 14, 1913 through the carelessness and negligence of the company. The defendant was negligent in that it did not keep its track flush with the street as required by law. Mr. GREEN was an inmate of the Red Cross Hospital at San Mateo for a period of two months. Plaintiff also asks for the sum of $4270 expended for medicine, operations, etc., and for the further sum of $2500, this representing the sum he would have earned as an attorney, had he not been injured. He was unable to practice his profession for nearly a year. The total sum asked for is $31,770. Green, Humphreys & Green are the attorneys for plaintiff.
