http://www.insidebayarea.com/search/ci_4040375 From The San Mateo County Times of July 12, 2006 San Mateo supervisors recall 1856 By Rebekah Gordon, STAFF WRITER REDWOOD CITY - There were charges of incompetence, requests for road repairs and borrowing against empty coffers for expenses, at Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting. Although this set of issues sounds familiar, they are a tad out of date - about 150 years. In honor of the county's sesquicentennial, the Board of Supervisors re-read the minutes of the first board meeting, held on July 7, 1856, echoing the voices of their predecessors, Charles Clark and James Berry. There was the matter of John N. Reid, who was "incompetent to fill the office of Magistrate which he now holds and in fact refused to perform the duties of this office," the minutes read. On Clark's motion, with but a proverbial snap of the fingers, he was removed from his judicial position and replaced by appointee David Marvin. If only it were always this easy. Then there were the roads. The principal road leading through the county, which connected Santa Clara with San Francisco, was in need of repair. Clark was authorized to contract for repairs "at an expense not to exceed 50 dollars." And of course, with all the money the county had, there was the matter of where to safely keep it. The county clerk and treasurer had reported to the board that the "Books, Papers and Treasure of the county could not be safely kept without an Iron Safe." Indeed, orders were issued to procure one for no more than $300. But the county pockets were hardly deep then, and 150 years ago the concept of credit, which they called "sum payable when the money is in the Treasury," was novel. "This county was always ahead of the curve when you hear how they did business at that time," Supervisor Adrienne Tissier said. The 1856 board ordered court seals, seal presses, county stationery and books for the grand sum total of $511.62 on credit, effectively the Board of Supervisors' first bill. The board also dabbled in the mundane, procuring rooms for county officers and the courts at $40 a month for six months, appointing various men to positions as magistrates and constables, and ensuring that its minutes be published in the "Daily True Californian" newspaper, a long-ago precursor to the Web. The original minutes now are on display at the San Mateo County History Museum in Redwood City. The county was formed after an amendment to the Consolidation Act, authored by San Francisco County State Assemblyman Horace Haews, which called for the consolidation of San Francisco's county and city governments. The act cut off about nine-tenths of San Francisco county and ordered the severed piece organized into a new county. Redwood City was selected to be the county seat. One hundred and fifty years later, the Board of Supervisors still preside in the same city, managing a budget of $1.6 billion and providing services to nearly 700,000 people. "I think it's exciting to think that we are also a piece of history that people will look back on years to come," Tissier said.
Hi All, I am a new lister. I am trying to locate any information on the above mentioned 2 people and their descendants. yes, Dr Thomas had 2 children by Susanna .. Adelaide (1877-1954) and Thomas (1880-1898). I am still trying to piece together Susanna's family ... I need a few certificates to lock in extra details. yes, I would like a copy of Dr Thomas Slater & Susanna Shoobridge's marriage certificate, please. What I have uncovered so far: Dr Thomas Slater (1836 born UK-1898, California) ... I have no idea in California where he is buried. He did move around in California. I am told that in Polks Medical and Surgical Directory of the United States, his education is given as College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow [1860] and Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh [1866]. In 1886 he lived in Alameda, Alameda Co., in 1896 he was living in Los Gatos, Santa Clara Co. and in 1898 he was living in Anderson, Shasta Co. Susanna Slater (1852, Toronto, Canada?-1914, California) I cannot locate when and how the Slaters came to USA (either directly in c 1880/1) or via Canada. I have no idea in California where she is buried.... presumably with her husband. Thomas jnr (1879-1898). Apparently died in Denver, Colorado in 1898 but pre 1900 records in Colorado are so hard & I have confirmation that the Vital Records Dept of the Health Dept cannot find the death recorded. Adelaide (1877-1954). She married a Mr Bowen (possibly in Pennsylvania, Washington State or California about 1902) and had 3 children Doris (1904-?), Genevieve (1907-?) & Gladys (1909-?). She remarried (by divorced or death) William Brightman (in California) and they had a daughter, Theda (1918, Sacarmento Co-1990 Santa Cruiz Co). I have no idea in California where she is buried nor where William died or is buried.... presumably they are buried together. Doris (1904-?). She married Robert Byers and they had a daughter June (1923-?) ... that is all I know Genevieve (1907-?) ... I know nothing about her. Gladys (1909-?) ... I know nothing about her. Theda (1918-1990). She married a Mr Galloway and that is all I know about her. Can anyone please assist me? Hi, You could send for an information copy of the death certificates for all, it would give you who gave information (name, date of birth, parent's names and etc). You can send to Holy Cross, they will do a search (they charge) and send you any information they have for Bertha, who owns the burial plot and who else is buried there. I do not know of any index maybe someone else does. Hello, I see where you have recently added databases of San Mateo County Death Records, Mortuary Index and San Mateo County Obituary Index. I am searching for the names of the parents and who provided the information upon the death of Bertha Hospenthal. She died on September 7, 1975 in San Francisco and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery under the direction of GANTNER-FELDER-KENNY, 1965 Market St. at Duboce Ave. Would any of these databases reveal this information? I am also searching for this same information on Bertha's parents - Emma Vogel who died in San Francisco on Sept. 8, 1937 and Fred Vogel who died in Los Angeles on June 3, 1935. Gifford, date unknown, possibly in MO. Does anyone know what the C.A. initials stood for? Or his birth or death dates? My great Aunt Marie's second marriage was to Raymond J. Sherhart date unknown. She was living in Chicago, IL when she met Ray. He was born January 17, 1896 in Arcadia, WI and died March 12, 1958 in Madison, WI. She did not have any children with either husband. However, Ray may have been married before and had a daughter (need to research this.) Marie did not marry again, but moved back to MO for a couple of years to be near her sister, Bea, then on to Palo Alto, San Clara Co., CA to be near another sister, Peache, where she worked as a switchboard operator, in the mid 1960's, (and dad tho! ught, possibly at the same college where Peache was a secretary), until her death. If you have any photos of Marie or her sisters, I would be interested in seeing them or hearing about those stories. Marie had 5 sisters: Grace Mae (Mrs. Fred DeMott); Lynna B. (Mrs. Charles W. It is called Raking the Ashes, Genealogical Strategies for Pre-1906 Research. Member Nancy Peterson, CG has done a magnificent job of not only telling about the records that survived but also other records one can use to get the needed information. We have had excellent reviews on the book by noted genealogists...I am sure this will help you if you need pre-1906 assistance. Reviewers have also mentioned that this book would be very useful for any place where records have been destroyed. Information about the book is on our website. This would be great for early San Mateo records too...jane
"VA expands online burial data features" http://www.gcn.com/online/vol1_no1/41106-1.html It talks a little about the maps you can print out for burial locations (definitely helpful!). But, now, you can print them from home. Also, some interesting info: "...VA recently added to its database the mostly private cemeteries in which 1.9 million veterans were buried with VA grave markers. ...Beyond the 5 million records now available, VA continues to add approximately 1,000 new records to the database each day. VA also plans to add to its online database the exact locations of veterans' gravesites in the remaining state veterans cemeteries." Ron
