    1. [CASANLUI] Reed Family Murders-San Miguel
    2. In 1837-38 William Reed is listed as an English Sailor and lumberman in the Monterey District. Also named pilot and mate on the schooner "California" in 1837-39. He married a native (no name listed) and settled near San Miguel before 1846 in which year with Petronilo Rios, he got a grant of the Mission Rancho. In Dec 1848, after returning to his home from a successful trip to the mines he was murdered with his wife, children and servants, eleven persons in all. The four robbers were believed to be discharged N.Y. Volunteers. One of the assins was killed in pursuit. His name was Sam Brenard. The other three were caught and executed at Sta. B on Dec 28th. Their names were Joseph P. Lynch, Peter Quinn, and Peter Remer. Ramon Reed was also killed while persuing the suspects. (does not mention relationship to William). He was the grantee of Agua Puerca in 1843 and Canada de San Miguel 1846. They were arrested by "Lataillade", Vice Consul of Sta. B. His wife was Maria Antonia de. la Guerra. He is also Grantee of Mission Property around San Luis Obispo Mission and Santa Barbara. Also murdered was Josefa Ortega (does not mention her relationship - maybe servant or relative) Her parents are Ignacio Oliver, Sgt Sta B 1781, died in 1794. Her mother was Maria Antonio Felix. Josefa's name is Maria Estefana Josefa Oliver and she is married to Jose V. Ortega. Information taken from "California Pioneers." Betsy
