This was a large family of very rugged boys. My grandfather used to hire some of them to work on his ranch on the Estrella. A few years ago one of the remaining members of this family, George Stockdale, lived in Shandon and he told me John L Sullivan came to Paso Robles to stage an exhibition bout. One of the boys took him on and, according to George, thoroughly thrashed him. George told me that the press kept this quiet. Late in both of their lives,Ellen Stockdale married my great grandfather, Peter Mc Adam. It didn't last long. I often wonder when I pass under the Stockdale Hwy on Hwy 5 weather this was named after the family. When the Stockdales finally moved it was to Oregon where, as rumor has it they started the Roundup. Can anyone help me to bettter understand this family
