William Simpson Publication Date: Mar 25, 2000 William Tracy Simpson, 79, of San Luis Obispo died Monday, March 20, 2000, of heart failure. Private family services have been held. Mr. Simpson was born Dec. 7, 1920, in Berkeley to Tracy and Cornelia Ewing Simpson. He received a Ph.D. in chemistry from UC Berkeley in 1948. He then taught chemistry at the University of Washington and the University of Oregon, spending one year teaching in Peru and Chile as a Fulbright scholar. An expert in theoretical physical chemistry, he was an author of numerous publications, including research articles and a book, and was a Gordon Conference chairman. He retired in 1977 and moved to Taos, N.M., in 1983, where he lived for five years with his family. Mr. Simpson served as a captain in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II and earned a Bronze Star. He also was an amateur painter, lithographer and photographer and played Bach and boogie-woogie on the piano. His first marriage to Ann Bruck ended in divorce. He married Carmen Tschudi in 1961. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Kergan. He is survived by his wife, Carmen of San Luis Obispo; two daughters, Elizabeth Simpson of Ossining, N.Y., and Marjorie Went of Mill Valley; two sons, Carlos Simpson of Nice, France, and John Simpson of Madison, Conn.; and four grandchildren, Cora, Bridget, Chloe and Leo. Contributions may be made to a favorite charity. Arrangements are by Reis Chapel in San Luis Obispo.
