Hi Mark, Did you get an answer to your question - I've never ordered a SS5 (yet) but I would think that you would want both - one gives information that the deceased completed on his own when he was younger and just starting to work. It would have his parent's names and his birthdate, all accurate because he completed it. The death certificate will give you information at the time of death, burial location, funeral home which might lead to an obituary naming survivors. It might not have the correct birthdate or parent's names because that information is only as good as the informant - but you might find he served in the military and what is last employment was and how long he had been in CA - all useful information to finding other information. Here's all I know or have saved on the SS5: A very helpful tool for genealogists is using social security records. If you have a relative who was working any time after 1935 they probably had social security. When they applied for their account they had to fill out an application form called an SS-5.The form consisted of: The applicants full name The applicants address The applicants age and birthday Their place of employment Their place of birth The names of his/her parents including his mothers maiden name Their sex Their race The date of application Their signature And for applications before 1947, their employment information, too. Read more about the process at: http://members.aol.com/rechtman/ssafaq.html SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX go here and print out a letter based on his listing http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi by Brian Bonner Mavrogeorge <[email protected]> The Social Security Death Index (SSDI), an often-used source of information, is more formally known as the index to the Social Security Administration Death Master File. The file is created from Social Security Administration (SSA) payment records and includes for each decedent (if the information is available to the SSA): name, Social Security number (SSN), date of birth, date of death, state where the SSN was issued, ZIP code of the last residence, and ZIP code of where the death benefit was sent. Because the SSA records were not automated until the 1960s, the index only covers deaths since about 1962. It may include a few earlier records, but there hasn't been any concerted effort on the part of the SSA to enter older information. There are many reasons why a person might not be in the SSDI: -- File has an estimated three per cent error rate. -- Person might not have had a Social Security number. -- Information might have been reported incorrectly. -- SSA might not have been notified of the person's death. -- Person might have changed his or her name. -- Person might have used a different spelling of his or her name. -- Person might have died before the SSA put its records on the computer. If you do find someone, the data can provide clues for further research. 1. Surname and given name. Use these to confirm the customary spellings of deceased's names. 2. SSN. Use to confirm that your information is targeted to the right individual, and/or to help establish legal rights to information and benefits. 3. State where SSN was issued. Although not 100% accurate, it can aid in pinpointing where an individual resided at that time and where additional information might be available. 4. Date of birth and death. Use these to confirm, correct, or clarify information. 5. State where the individual died. Use to find additional records and perhaps determine a previous residence. 6. ZIP codes for where the death payment was sent. In 1981 the $255 death payment was restricted to spouses and dependent children only. Sometimes individuals travel to other locations for assisted care or for medical treatment before their deaths. This information can lead to hospital records or other pertinent information. Don't rely just on the SSDI. As a genealogist you want to check the original records whenever possible. Order a copy of the original Social Security number application from the SSA. It will have the applicant's name, complete birth date and place, and often the parents' names. Since several states did not require birth certificates until the early or mid-1900s, the SSN application data could be used in lieu of a birth certificate. The SSDI can point you in the right direction for gathering additional information, including ordering a copy of a death certificate from a state or county vital records office. For example, on a California death certificate you will find: 1. Name of the deceased (could provide new middle names or nicknames). 2. Date of death (could lead to newspaper obituaries). 3. Place of death (often in a different town, county or even state of residence; could lead to searches of city directories, clues to religious affiliations, neighbors, friends, and hospital records). 4. Birth date of deceased (if provided by a relative during the time of mourning, this may be inaccurate, but it could clarify an incomplete family record. 5. Place of birth of deceased (if part of the physician's records, could be accurate). 6. Name of father of deceased (could lead to federal census records for entire family or to a search of other vital records). 7. Place of birth of father of deceased (could lead to further searches of SSA records for the father, federal census searches, or birth record searches for the father in a new locality, or it might give immigrant ancestor's hometown in the old country). 8. Name of mother, including her maiden name (could provide clues to other names on the obituary; could also lead to the same items mentioned in No. 7, plus other records). 9. Place of birth of mother of deceased (see Nos. 7 and 8). 10. Name of spouse of deceased (could lead to a search of marriage records). 11. Whether the spouse is living or deceased (if deceased, could lead to another SSDI search). The information on each state's death certificate varies, but unless the actual record is ordered you won't know. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Sunday, January 02, 2000 8:22 AM Subject: [CASANLUI] Death certificate vs Social Security? >Which would be better a death certificate or his social security file? Hi Everyone, I'm in Modesto, Stanislaus County, CA Roger. I have access to CADI 1940-94 and CAMI 1960-85. I also visit Lodi, San Joaquin county, quite frequently so I could do lookups in the Lodi NewsSentinel on microfilm and city directories. Mark, Looks like actual date of death has been identified - if he's on the SSDI then you can get his soc. sec. number and use it for ordering the SS5 which would give you some good information also. If you want any followup on the survivors listed int he obit because you think they might now be deceased, let me know and I'll do CADI lookups. Happy Hunting. Mark and Colleen, Colleen, when you get the CADI if Walter Stowell did die in SLO, I will be going home sometime between the 13th and 20th to research, I can at that time transcribe the death certs. get an obit etc. There is a Ben Franklin Sandwich Shop on Higuera St. it's been around since the 60's sometime, used to be I believe on Chorro St. There is NO Watts district or town in SLO County only one is in LA that I am aware of. Mark, if Colleen is successful and you want me to transcribe certificate and make a copy of available obit. get a photo of the shop etc. let me know. Doreen
Hi Mark, After my kids go back to school I can take a look at the CA Death Index (CADI) for you for an exact date of death on Walter Stowell. CADI will give you the county location of death, actual death date, soc. sec. number, spouse's initials if the spouse is surviving and the cert number so you can order the death certificate for more information, such as burial location, funeral home, etc. I can look for a Mary Stowell at the same time. CADI is available on fiche at my local library 1940-94. Not sure how many Watts locations there are but the infamous one is in Los Angeles county. Hello to everyone on the SLO list. My name is ROGER BENNETT CASTLE. I am a Morro Bay native, born in SLO in 1945. My father was MILES HARDY CASTLE. He emigrated from Kingston (London), England in 1927. In 1932 her married MARGARET JEAN BENNETT, of Templeton (CA). They had two children, myself and my sister, NANCY JOAN. We all lived in a large adobe home my father built in the 1930's I am working on three family lines at present. My fathers male line was traced by one of my uncles and is complete back to the 1400s and sketchy back to the 1200s. I have traced the BENNETT male line back the pre-Revolutionary New England and to Bristol, England. My maternal grandmothers maiden name was MCCORMICK and I am beginning on that line. I am researching in Clark Co, Washington. (Pioneer, WA; just north of Vancouver). I would love to exchange e-mail about any of these names or places. I especially enjoy stories of Morro Bay 19301960. For those out of the area I am happy to use my native status (that is talk to other Morro Bay old foogies) to try an answer any question you might have. --RC [email protected] ________________________________________________________________ Get FREE voicemail, fax and email at http://voicemail.excite.com Talk online at http://voicechat.excite.com

JoJo, I have a very sketchy family tree for the Trotts, so we can't rule yours out. However I don't see a match. But I would appreciate that address, or you may give her mine. My Isaac was the fourth child of Josiah Winship Trott and Sarah Otis Card. Isaac was born in 1860 in Bath or Woolwich, Maine. I just recently was given this family tree and there is absolutely no documentation with it. So I have a lot of research to do. There seems to be three discrete Trott families in the US: the first is descended from Thomas Trott and Sarah Proctor who arrived in Massachusetts in the early to mid-1600's; the second is a Trott family who arrived from Canada in the mid-1900's; and the third is the German Trotts who dropped the Von from the name. Isaac comes from the first one. Thanks for your help. Sally
Sally: Was Isaac Trott the son of Joseph Trott, who was born in New Brunswick? Did he have a sister, Abigail, who was born in Bangor, Maine in 1840 and who married first a Bryant and then Benjamin F. Wiley? Abigail died in Watsonville 9 October 1924, and two of her sons by her second marriage died in San Benito County, though they had lived in Santa Maria and Paso Robles prior to that. I have helped someone who is related to this family, and if you think it is also yours, I will be happy to give you her email address. --Sheila P. I have relatives buried in the old Creston Cemetery. Does anyone have an index of that one? My great grandmother to name one (Catherine Boehner) buried 26 April 1909. No headstone I could find, though I think she may be buried next to her daughter, Frida (Frieda). August Boehner, a little boy, is also buried there. Nathan
Sally, Mandatory registration of deaths did not start until 1905, if you found the mortuary record that may be all there was. These CAN include the #, date of burial, name, sex, age, occupation, place of death, cause of death, place of burial, physician and undertaker. Some had no death date given. There is also an index to probate and wills at the Superior Court Clerk Office, I think I have some of the index I just have to find the right box, or go to SLO and check. Isaac does not appear in the Thomas Workman Temple III Index to California Mission Vital Records. I will keep the name in my research log and look around when I go to SLO. Doreen
Hi Sally, Yes there is an index to both the IOOF Lawn Memorial and the Old Mission Cemetery the problem is if there is no marker the grave is not in the index. The cemeteries were walked and recorded by volunteers of the SLO Gen. Society and the actual burial records were not compared. If you are not in a hurry, I will try and find the site for you. I live in Coalinga but go to SLO on a regular basis for research. I was born and raised there and have only been out of the area a year! My main focus is on early California Families, part of my family is 9th gen. and another came after the civil war, settling first in Hollister then SLO, so have alot of roots there. I can check with the cemeteries officers to see if there is any information in the burial records. I can also check the Recorders office if you haven't done that already. For IOOF, if you e me the name and relationship, asking me to access the file, the office will allow me to transcribe or copy what is there. The Catholic Cemetery also has a more complete file than the index. IF stones are there, I also can photograph. The Catholic cemetery has been re-located twice, the first in the Mission Church quadrangle. After 1860, on Higurea St between Carmel and Pacific Sts which dead ended at the cemetery. In 1877 a law was passed which forbid burial inside the city limits.. so the 3rd site was opened, alot of markers and records have disappeared with the re-locations. At one time the Catholic Cemetery was the only cemetery. I check the Temple Index to Mission Records for your early names if you send them to me. Doreen
Mary, Thank you for your helpful information. I have spent a lot of time researching in the Temple Mission records as well as other Mission records. I have not yet attended a Los Californios meeting, although relatives have encouraged me. My earliest ancestor born here was Maria Antonia Isabella Lugo, born in San Luis Obispo in 1776, daughter of Francisco Salvador Lugo who emigrated to Alta California in 1774 or thereabouts. However, all of my direct ancestors had moved on to Monterey by about 1795. Somos Primos is a not something I have heard of, but will look into it. I especially liked the Angelfire website and plan to enter my names there. Thank you again. Sally Bertine Hollister, CA
Doreen, The person I am looking for is my great grandfather, Isaac Twing Trott, born about 1860 in Maine. The family story is that he came to California for his health, married, had two daughters, and then died in Nov 1892 when the younger daughter, my grandmother, was one year old. I did visit the Recorder's office in SLO when we were there in October of 1997, also the LDS Family History Center. The only records I found with the county were the delayed birth certificates for the girls and the burial record for Isaac. No death certificate for him. I found a funeral notice in the newspaper but no obit. Maybe I should have looked in later editions. Thanks for your info. Sally Bertine Hollister, CA
