    1. [CASANLUI] Mrs. E.G. Lewis, Atascadero
    2. Last month I posted a message asking for information on Edward G. Lewis, founder of Atascadero, and I received a number of responses, all suggesting I contact the Atascadero Historical Society. Many thanks to everyone who did respond. But.... Atascadero Historical Society must be like the historical societies out here in Western MA, open a few hours on Sunday during the summer, kept alive by a few hardy volunteers who don't have time to do research, primarily functioning as a museum. I wrote, but I don't think I will be hearing back from the Atascadero Historical Society. I have read a lot of info on Edward Gardner Lewis. Our local university library has a copy of The Siege of University City (thanks to KK for pointing this book out to me), and also believe it or not has bound volumes of Sunset Magazine which in 1925-1926 ran a series of articles on E.G. Lewis, World's Champion Borrower. Found E.G. Lewis' date of death on SSDI, and have copies of his obit in LA Times and St Louis Post. But it's Mrs. E.G. Lewis I need to know more about. KK wrote me that she died in 1935. Is there anyone on this list who has the month and day? Also, is there a library I can write to that has the Atascadero News on microfilm? Can check LA Times and St Louis Post right here at our wonderful university library (UMASS Amherst), and San Luis Obispo City Public Library can copy obit for me from SLO Telegram-Tribune, but I imagine obits from Atascadero News would have much more detail. 3. Yes, E.G. Lewis was the founder of Atascadero. Here's a website with a short blurb: http://www.pe.net/~rksnow/cacountyatascadero.htm#history The Atascadero Historical Society runs a museum with more information on E.G. Lewis, they may even have a copy of his wife's obit. You can contact them at 6500 Palma Avenue, Atascadero, CA, 93422. I was told that my great uncle was buried there, but when I went to find out about it St. Patrick's doesn't have the records and neither does the main cemetery. The parish office suggested that the diocese in Monterey may have the records. I haven't gone into the cemetery itself, the last time I was up in SLO I had my 3 small kids in the car and wasn't able to go traipsing around in the weeds. Does anyone know if any of the books you mention have these records? Sheri Payne (SYLVIA) Researching SYLVIA, WHITE, BRANCO, JUAREZ, O'NEILL, RODRIGUEZ, BEE ----- Original Message ----- From: M Swartz To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, September 18, 2000 4:23 AM Subject: [CASANLUI] Furman Request--More Info Hi Jackie, Thanks so much for the contact regarding my SLO County request for a look-up regarding my Furman family! I believe that it is possible that at least one of my ancestors is buried in the Arroyo Grande Cemetery, however the office manager could not tell me for certain as all of the records pre-1902 were destroyed by fire. I originally found the index of the Mortuary book in a SLO Genealogical Society Newsletter sitting on the shelf here in a library in Central Illinois. (Here I was looking all over California for this ancestor and find the clue right here in my own backyard!) The article accompanying the index said there was a copy of the publication in the Atascadero Library. Another volunteer was going to check for me but apparently the library has rather limited hours. I checked the website for the SLO Co. Genealogical Society and they listed two publications that I was hoping someone could check to see what information was listed for any Furman names. They are likely both on the shelves in the library but are also available for purchase. I was hoping for a look-up as what I am really after is a death certificate and obituary, but will go ahead and make the purchase if needed. I believe that there is a library in the south part of the county also, but don't know if the books are on the shelves there--does anyone on the list know the answer to that? The information on the two books is as follows: REGRISTRY of FUNERALS-Woods-Voakes Mortuary, 1896-1915, Arroyo Grande CA. Over 800 names, including age, cause of death, person paying for funeral & other interesting items. CEMETERIES OF SOUTH SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, CA (1877-1941) compiled by Barbara Carlson, 77 pgs, publ. 1991 Lists names and dates for 3 cemeteries: Old Catholic (Price) Halcyon, and Arroyo Grande Cemetery District, other information by surname in alphabetical order. Again, thank you for the contact. If this is something you can't access--I definitely understand. Please let me know and perhaps another volunteer can get to it easily or I will need to order the books. 3. A kind SLO volunteer found several articles pertaining to the wedding of my great grandparents, Alice Furman and Oran Elliott. There are many names in them so I thought I would share them with the list. Alice was a resident of San Luis Obispo and Oran of San Jose, CA. Lisa June 10, 1908 WEDDED AMIDST FLORAL BEAUTY ELLIOTT – FURMAN NUPTIALS TOOK PLACE AT THE GARDEN-STREET M. E. CHURCH LAST EVENING One of the most elaborate weddings of the season took place at the Garden-Street M. E. church last evening when Miss Alice FURMAN became the bride of Oran Edgar ELLIOTT. The interior of the edifice was beautifully festooned with ropes and garlands of pepper leaves mingled with pink and white sweet peas, the latter being the choicest variety grown on the ROUTZAHN seed farm. The corner of church near the altar was transformed into a floral bower of green, pink, and white while the organ on the opposite side of the altar, was embedded in greenery and fragrant flowers. In front of the altar was a stately symmetrical floral arch, and intersecting it near the top were two lovers’ knots of pink and white sweet peas, beneath which the impressive ceremony was performed. About 200 friends of the contracting couple were present and the first three pews were ribboned off for relatives of the bride and groom and their intimate friends. The ushers were the Misses Julia KESTER, Minnie WAYLAND, Ella REID and Evaline TILLMAN. Shortly before 8 o’clock Mrs. Rilla HENRY, of Arroyo Grande, sang “O Promise Me”, and its rendition was followed by the entry of the bridal party to the music of Mendelssohn’s Wedding March played by Miss Lou PARSONS. The groom and his best man, Arthur FURMAN, a brother of the bride, had already entered and were standing to the right of the altar. First came the ushers, two by two, carrying shower bouquets of pink and white carnations and asparagus ferns. Next came the bridesmaids and groomsmen, Frank L. SANDERCOCK and Miss Mabel GREEN, Leo WAYLAND and Miss Enda SMITH, Leo ALBERT and Miss Bessie SMITH, Fred THALER and Miss Elsie SMITH. The bridesmaids were gowned in blue, white, and pink, and carried bouquets of carnations and ferns. Miss Mabel GREEN wore a gown of pink mull, elaborately trimmed with tine ruchings of pink satin ribbon. Then came Miss Helen SANDERCOCK and Miss Edna ROOT as flower girls, carrying baskets of pink and white sweet peas. Then followed the maid of honor, Miss Frances HUGHES, of Oakland, who was a classmate of the bride. She was gowned in a blue net over blue silk and carried a large bouquet of roses. The bride, attended by her brother, Warren FURMAN, of Soledad, brought up the rear. The bride’s gown was of white net and lace over white silk. She wore a veil of fine net, caught by bride’s roses, and a few sprays of lilies of the valley in her corsage. She carried white bride’s roses. It was exactly 8 o’clock when Rev. Carl M. ROSS spoke the words that joined the happy hearts, following which the little flower girls scattered sweet peas before the bride and groom. An informal reception was held at the parsonage immediately afterward. The bride inadvertently stepped under a large bell suspended from the ceiling and was showered with rose petals. The presents were both numerous and handsome, and included a cut mayonnaise bowl, several cut glass dishes, silver carving set, silver spoons, knives, silver nut set, handsome table linens, etc. Mr. and Mrs. ELLIOTT departed on train No. 17 for a brief honeymoon trip to the Santa Cruz Mountains. They were accompanied to the depot by the entire bridal party and a happy bon voyage extended to them. Mr. ELLIOTT is a well known contractor and builder of San Jose, in which city he and his bride will make their permanant residence. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. 3. Hi List, I found an F.M. Furman listed in an index of the 'Registry of Woods-Voakes Mortuary 1896-1925' and believe that it is likely my great great grandfather, Frederick Miller Furman. The mortuary no longer has the original records as they were turned over to the historical society and the early Arroyo Grande cemetery records were destroyed in a fire in 1902. I would appreciate if someone could check the mortuary record and the South San Luis Obispo Co. Cemetery Book for both Frederick Miller Furman and his wife Nancy Furman. I do know that at least two of their children--James Arthur Furman and Alice Laura Furman--were in the area around 1908. Alice was married in San Luis Obispo in 1908 and James (a resident of Arroyo Grande) was listed as a witness on the marriage license. There was no sign of any Furman family on the 1910 census. Thanks for any help on this--of course, if anyone has additional information on this family I would be interested and would be glad to share what I have. Posted on: San Luis Obispo County, California<BR>Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/SanLuisObispo/26 Surname: STEWART ------------------------- I'm looking for information on the fate of William Stewart, born in 1840 in VA., and his descendants. William's parents were John Stewart b. July 11, 1801 in Monongalia Co., VA and Elizabeth Keiser b. November 22, 1808 in Fayette Co., PA (Now Taylor Co., W.VA). William had 4 brothers, Allen, John, James & Henry and 2 sisters, Hannah & Elizabeth. William left VA probably sometime after 1860 and relocated in San Luis Obispo. He contacted his family in VA to tell them where he had settled and that he had married and had 2 children, William and Allen. He never contacted his family again to anyone's knowledge. Any information is appreciated. Donna Summers [email protected]
