I have a Henry A. Fritch age 68 and single that is living in San Luis Obispo in 1910. The census shows he was naturalized in 1867 from Canada. Does anyone know how long a person had to be in the states before he was able to be naturalized at this time period of 1867? Trying to pinpoint entry time. Thank You. Also, I have a Ruth Nelson that is listed as Henry A. Fritch's neice in this census. It says she was born in Calif. abt. 1877 and her parents born in NJ and Canada. It states she is a teacher at the public schools. Does anyone have access to finding out anything about her as a teacher? Year books or anything? This is a new line in the family and may lead to the parents of Henry A. Fritch! Any help very welcome. Kathy Busby

In 1837-38 William Reed is listed as an English Sailor and lumberman in the Monterey District. Also named pilot and mate on the schooner "California" in 1837-39. He married a native (no name listed) and settled near San Miguel before 1846 in which year with Petronilo Rios, he got a grant of the Mission Rancho. In Dec 1848, after returning to his home from a successful trip to the mines he was murdered with his wife, children and servants, eleven persons in all. The four robbers were believed to be discharged N.Y. Volunteers. One of the assins was killed in pursuit. His name was Sam Brenard. The other three were caught and executed at Sta. B on Dec 28th. Their names were Joseph P. Lynch, Peter Quinn, and Peter Remer. Ramon Reed was also killed while persuing the suspects. (does not mention relationship to William). He was the grantee of Agua Puerca in 1843 and Canada de San Miguel 1846. They were arrested by "Lataillade", Vice Consul of Sta. B. His wife was Maria Antonia de. la Guerra. He is also Grantee of Mission Property around San Luis Obispo Mission and Santa Barbara. Also murdered was Josefa Ortega (does not mention her relationship - maybe servant or relative) Her parents are Ignacio Oliver, Sgt Sta B 1781, died in 1794. Her mother was Maria Antonio Felix. Josefa's name is Maria Estefana Josefa Oliver and she is married to Jose V. Ortega. Information taken from "California Pioneers." Betsy
Richard, I believe that the McMillans are relatives of mine. My great grandfather was David Galbraith White who's brother was George Alexander White of Shandon. Their parents were Jean McNair and George Henry White of New Brunswick originally, and later immigrated to Shandon. I believe that Jean McNair White's grandmother was a McMillan. I don't really know much about this side of the family. I have discovered the book by David Darlington, "In Condor Country" which features both Eben and Ian McMillan. This book briefly mentions the McMillan's family history which also includes my ancestors the Whites, McNairs, Fergusons and Cooks. The author mentions as a source, the 100 page oral history prepared by Dorothy McMillan's daughter Marlis Balogh. I would dearly love to find out more about that oral history!! I have tried to contact the author (unsuccessfully) in order to locate Marlis Balough. I would appreciate any information that you can share concerning these families! Richard, I believe that I am distant relative of the McMillan's. My great grandfather was David Gailbraith White (buried in the Shandon cemetary), brother to George Alexander White of Shandon. Their parents were Jean McNair and George Henry White of New Brunswick. Unfortunately, I don't know much about that side of my family. I have discovered the book "In Condor Country" by David Darlington which features Eben & Ian McMillan. This book refers to the Whites, McNairs, Fergusons and Cooks which I believe are my relatives. David Darlington refers to a 100 page oral family history compiled by Marlis Baloh, daughter of Dorothy McMillan (sister to Eben & Ian). Since in your message you mention the early history of the McMillans, I wonder if you have any other information that you would be willing to share with me? I have written to David Darlington in care of his publisher in hopes of trying to reach Marlis Baloh and her history of this family. I haven't been successful. I would appreciate any information that you have. Merrielyn ---------- > From: Richard D. Karen- We know of the McMillan family. Many descendants, their shirtsleeves, kith and kin still reside in the Paso Robles/Shandon and San Luis Obispo areas today. They claim Scot ancestry records back to almost 1200, from the Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde. In about 1829 Donald and Barbara Shaw MacMillan migrated to New Brunswick. Then beginning in 1872 the second migration of some of the clan began to Shandon, San Luis Obispo County, California. Next many of those went from Shandon to San Luis Obispo City, San Francisco Bay area or Santa Cruz area. The Alexander McMillan family remained, have known several of those children and grandchildren. Son Don McMillan was a good friend of my dad's, became an avid historian, columnist in the local Press newspaper, and was affectionately termed "The Sage of Shandon." In addition to Don and Alta Kester McMillan and their daughters, Don's brothers Ian and Eben and families, remain in Shandon. The El Paso de Robles Historical Society (Carnegie Library, 1100 Spring Street, Paso Robles, CA 93446) has records, books and materials, as well as a few items at the El Paso de Robles Area Pioneer Museum Association (P.O.Box 461, Paso Robles CA 93447). Looking for Lehmann family who settled in San Luis Obispo County about 1870-1880. Here is a link to family where they began in Missouri: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=smcleod&id=I844 My grandfather was born in New Cambria. His father, William Schindler a brother-in-law of the Lehmanns, went with the Lehmanns to California but returned to Missouri. In this family group, I believe Johannes Lehmann (born 1830) is the one who went to California.
This was sent to me and I thought it had enough merit to pass on. It isn't to long so check it out if you think you might have family or friends who might be on this list. Kathy Busby Please check the names if you know of or have family that served in Vietnam. The lists are alphabetical and long. I was driving to work this morning and heard of a wonderful new site which may help many of you in your research or personally. Apparently, dog tags from individuals who served in Vietnam who were either missing in action, killed in action, or simply individuals who lost their tags are being sold in Ho Chi Min City on the streets. There are a group of blessed individuals who are buying these up and making them available free of charge to family members of these individuals. The site is <http://www.founddogtags.com>. I hope it can be of help to you or your loved ones. [Original Poster: Stacey Cox, St. Louis, MO]

Hello, I am new to the list. From the archives I can see this list isn't to busy. I sure hope that there is someone out there that can help me. I have been on the hunt for my FRITCH line who came into the US again from Canada around 1867. Elusive creatures these Fritch's. I have found Henry A. FRITCH, my ggrandfathers brother, in San Luis Obispo County in the 1910 census living with a niece I know nothing about. I know very little about Henry A. FRITCH so am excited to find a family relation to trace with him. In the 1910 census he is living with a Ruth NELSON, age 33 and born in Calif., a teacher at the public school, and single living on Archer Street? Marshal and Keach are the next streets listed on the page. This is my Henry's niece according to the census....sure hope it isn't one of those "I am the UNCLE" type of things as he is 35 yrs. older than she! They also have a boarder named Lee HOLMEN from Texas. Please, can anyone tell me anything about this Ruth NELSON or Henry A. FRITCH? If she was a teacher there must be something about her somewhere! The person above them on the census is also from C! anada, a Thomas L. REED, age 56. Could there be a connection there? Any help would be appreciated. I am desperately trying to find their parents, My grandfathers naturalization papers and all where destroyed by floods in Santa Cruz County. I am hoping something of the siblings will give me a clue. I know Henry's mom's name is Jane FRITCH Hess and they come from New Brunswick, Canada. That's about it except it says he was naturalized so maybe papers in your county? pg. of 1910 info for San Luis Obispo from soundex: 5 42 12B ward 4 Thank you all for reading my epic tale from this county. I do so hope that it bares fruit. Kathy Busby

Inquirers: The California State Library is in Sacramento. There are numerous county and city libraries as well, including the San Francisco, the Huntington (Pasadena) and the universities. Newspaper abstracts are now posted online via the RootsWeb list system. Most CA communities and counties have a Genealogical Society with local researchers, including San Luis Obispo County and Paso Robles Area. Bancroft's series are a good resource for 1800's CA research of the pioneers, expeditions, gold rush and immigrant waves, and there are numerous collections of journals, diaries and correspondence around. Have not seen many of these on the net. More recent records found online- California Birth Records (1905-1995): http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/birth/search.cgi California Death Records (1940-1997): http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi Social Security Death Index: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi These could be a logical starting point. Sorry I could not provide specific answers to earlier inquiries. Richard
