    1. [CASANJOA] State Hospital deaths...burials...
    2. Margie
    3. Hi.. Marge Campbell here.. I have started on a little hunt..haunt.. whatever.... I get a request about every couple of months... "My family member died in Stockton, CA... at the State Hospital... buried in the Hospital cemetery..." Not unusual.. many who died at the Stockton State Hospital are buried there.. HERE is the PROBLEM: This cemetery no longer exists (sorta..more later)... This cemetery was located next to Rural Cemetery (some mistakenly say buried at Rural because of this.. or in San Joaquin cemetery.. but this is NOT rural)... on property that is now owned & occupied by St Joseph's Medical Center. There are no gravestones left... just a parcel of land at rear of center, facing Cemetery lane. The land deed states this parcel was to have a gate and made a public cemetery... memorial site for old cemetery. This is in the process of being done now.. according to Joe Holt of the Karl Ross post of the American Legion. I have offered Joe any help I can give in getting this done. Joe has been so kind as to verify information I have from old books, etc. The Asylum cemetery was purchased in Jan of 1875, It contained about 14 acres, was situated West of and adjoining the "Stockton Rural Cemetery" (1876-77 San Joaquin county directory). As a reference to us who are not familiar with the relative size of an acre of land.... 107 acres that comprised the entire State Hospital grounds took up 36 city blocks. So, 14 acres was about two to three city blocks... roughly the size of the Medical Center. I have copies of the deed & property descriptions of the parcels that were bought & sold by the KRoss post.. there is a notation that a certain portion of the land would be set aside as a cemetery, as there were still bodies there. I am almost certain ( and since Joe gave me the location & he is very aware of the location) that the land is that which has not been built on by the Med Center). I am going to get the plat maps, to pinpoint the exact location of parcel 1 & 2 .. to get the cemetery location exact. If you have a relative who died at the Stockton State Hospital, I would like to know. Also..If you know your ancester was moved from that cemetery to Rural or another local cemetery, I would like to know... I am told only common graves were at the SHCemetery.. but I know of at least two actual burial plots (one a family plot) that were moved. I will post more on this later.. I can't find the ledger that Joe H says was sent to Sonoma State Hospital (had about 40 of their patients in the book) when the State Hosp. closed. This ledger had names of those who were removed from the cemetery, cremated and buried in a common grave at rural. Other than this ledger, only known record I know of is each individual patient record... these are only accessable by a known/proven family member. Marge Now there is a neat "History of Insanity in California" in this directory... I will post this when I have time (several long pages).
