I apologize, I really should have been much clearer. What I have here are newspaper clippings that my 2nd great aunt (Cynthia Hammond Gray) pasted into two scrapbooks - some are of use to me (but I can identify them) and many are of people that I do not know of or care. However, if you all on the list - other San Joaquin County researchers are interested, I'll put them out on the list. The one I gave was just an example of what I was referring to. I have no knowledge of a Steiny - not interested in researching him - but there may be others on the list that are interested. If so, this would be of use to them, and I am willing to type them in if you all care about them. Otherwise, I have everything I need - I've been to the Cesar Chavez Branch of the Stockton Library and spent hours upon hours going through microfilm to find and identify newspaper articles about my family. And I think at one time or another I've used every one of the newspapers you listed - though mostly the Independent and the Record. Again - this is for the benefit of other researchers - not me. Vern D ////////////////////////////////////////// If you think that most of the clippings were from /Stockton/San Joaquin county newspapers. according to Stockton Memories (Covell & Woods) and Stockton Album Through the Years (Martin) the following are roughly the eras that newspapers were operating in Stockton: The Stockton Weekly Times - March1850 to April 1851 Stockton Jounal - June 1850 to 1854 San Joaquin Republican - April 1851 to 1862 and 1869 to 1872 Stockton Daily Argus - June 1854 September 1862 Stockton Weekly Democrat - 1857 to 1862 Evening Herald - July 1865 to ???? For example, after reducing possibles to United States and California and then using STEINY as initial search criteria and JULIUS as refinement, I came up with several possibles, such as : ////////////////////////////////////////// Stockton Daily Independent >>TUESDAY, 15 DEC 1868<< PIONEER MEETING -- Pursuant to adjournment, the pioneers of Stockton and vicinity met at the City Hall last evening. The meeting was called to order by the President, Dr. SHURTLEFF, in the Chair, and in the absence of the Recording Secretary, George DAUBNEY was elected Secretary pro tem. On motion it was resolved to admit to membership all persons who are eligible under the 2nd article of the Constitution, whereupon they were invited to present themselves at the President's desk and sign that instrument. The proposition met with considerable objection from some of those who had hitherto signed, but was finally carried by 1 vote. The following names, with dates of arrival, were appended: ..... Julius STEINY, Dec. 1849 .................... ------------------------------------------------- Stockton Daily Independent >>Wednesday, 21 Aug 1861<< MARRIED -- in Stockton, Aug. 20th, by the Rev. H. KROH; Mr. Julius STEINY to Miss Amelia SEEFERT, both of this city. ------------------------------------------------- Stockton Daily Independent >>MONDAY, 18 MAY 1868<< PIANO TUNING - Julius STEINY, an old resident of Stockton and a most excellent citizen, gives notice in our columns that he will attend to the business of piano tuning when called upon. Mr. S. is an adept at his profession, and we recommend those desirous of securing the services of a person in that line, to give him a call. ////////////////////////////////////////// This type of access is free of charge since the data base is populated by volunteers. My experience has been you don't usually get too many hits if the surname is somewhat unique, but it's still fairly tedious searching because you have open up each extract and search by eyeball for the name of interest. At the same website on the sidebar you'll find more extensive sources with a more robust search capability, but these sources require payment of a fee to gain full access. However they may be useful in narrowing your search. For instance, there's a partially readable scan of a Morturary Notice, dated 28 May 1878 in the San Francisco Bulletin for a Julius Steiny which is an excellant match for your obit. There's also two notices in the same newspaper about the sloop Ceres plying between San ?????? and Mokelumne City dated 1 May 1860 and 5 May 1860 whose Master was a Julius Steiny. ----- Original Message ---- From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, December 16, 2009 1:00:29 AM Subject: CASANJOA Digest, Vol 4, Issue 114 Today's Topics: 1. Would love to contact anyone who is researching those family names - especially if they are connected at all. A long time ago I informed the list that I was in possession of my great great and great grandmother's scrapbooks which included a large number of newspaper clippings of obits, etc. Most, if not all, are lacking a masthead or any information regarding the source of the article - can't identify the newspaper - and in some cases can't set the year. But if you all are interested I will go through these scrapbooks now and put them out on the list. An example: DIED; At his residence, in this city, May 24th, at 10:45 PM JULIUS STEINY, a native of Russia, aged 62 years. (The time of the funeral will be announced this evening.) The date "1878" is handwritten on the clipping. Let me know if you want more. Lynne Lynne N.
