He served eighteen years in the United States Navy, and was with Commodore Sloat at the capture of Monterey in 1846, and was one of the party that raised the first American flag at Monterey. He leaves a wife and three grown children. The funeral was conducted by the San Joaquin Society of California Society of California Pioneers. The Pioneer, published San Jose, Saturday, March 4, 1882
