    1. [CASANJOA] Charging to link to Free sites.. not fair
    2. Margie
    3. I just became aware that your Discovery.com site is charging people 7.95 for link information to sites on many of the free genealogy sites, Including the sites I host at rootsweb. I take offense at this, as I work hard to make sure the information is free for everyone. You defeat that goal.. and did not even find any of this information on your own... I am sending a copy of my note (this note) to aol's abuse address. I feel it is not fair for you to do this. I am also posting a copy of this note to the lists I host at Rootsweb. Please remove any mention of sites at Rootsweb, GenWeb, etc.. unless provided at no charge. I pay for copies, I upload the information & don't charge for it.. Why should you collect for work others do? Marge Campbell Host for Iron County MO web page, Iron county mail lists, Hermes maillist, Wenstrom maillist. Volunteer host of several other mail lists & one of a dozen volunteers now formating census information for free use on the internet.. http://www.rootsweb.com/~moiron2 Iron County MO Web Page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcampbel/home.htm Margie Campbell's Web Page I received this on my Hill list at rootsweb thought I would pass it on, I have no personal knowledge of these people. HILL-L@rootsweb.com I took a minute out of our volunteer typing time to check this site out. http://www.familydiscovery.com/ It is a fraudulent site because a membership gives you links to our free sites. You do not have to pay to get to any site in USGenWeb Right here, there is no charge to get to all the counties in USGenWeb. We are all hardworking volunteers to have genealogy information free for researchers. I have found links to our Macoupin civil war rosters, censuses, which we spent many hours of volunteer time now to have unknowing researchers pay a membership to click on a link to view our work. Macoupin County ILGenWeb volunteers have put over 1400 pages of free information and continuing to work to get more pages up. If any person finds our complete work in their membership, please notify me. Please pass this information onto any list. Let's try to keep these ripoffs from making their pile of money from our volunteer work. Please pass this onto any list you might be on. Hopefully, this site will be removed soon if not sooner. Thanks for listening. 3. Hi Marge.....did you see this message that came across the GoldRush list? Is this the same site you're talking about? Colleen It looks like the fictitious Family Discovery genealogy service has moved to Prodigy now. I contacted Prodigy this morning and they have asked that anyone who receives solicitation email from familydiscovery.com to take the following steps immediately: 1) Forward the entire Family Discovery message to: abuse@prodigy.com 2) Include the following information (most of which was provided by Rita from the Oconto County, WI list): Please note that the attached message is now being sent through your ISP service. They have been reported to various State Attorney General's Office on computer fraud, but it is hard to catch up with them. Originally the "company" linked to free information sites and placed the pages in "frames" so that it looked like it was their own work. Customers paid for that information. The scam, now, is paying for the free information links and then they "move" frequently and leave their paid-up customers without services. 3) Post these same instructions on any other lists today so that Prodigy has a better chance of finding the spammers. -- Linda Emerson Coordinator - Union Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/townships/Union.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Margie <margecam@pacbell.net> To: <CASANJOA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 12, 2001 10:24 PM Subject: [CASANJOA] Charging to link to Free sites.. not fair > I just became aware that your Discovery.com site is charging people 7.95 for > link information to sites on many of the free genealogy sites, Including the > sites I host at rootsweb.
