Perez died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto, at the age of 78. He was born on Dec. 28, 1914, to the late Jose and Cayetana (Escarsiga) Perez in Thurber, Texas. Mr. Perez was a 30-year resident of Stockton at the time of his death. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Dec. 1, 1941, to Aug. 24, 1944. He served in the Casa Blancha Campaign, the Tunisian Campaign and the Sicilian Campaign and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was rescued from prison by German doctors. He was severely wounded during the war and was disabled. He received three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star for his service and his injuries. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans in Stockton. Mr. Perez is survived by his son, Adrian Perez and wife Roxanne of Woodland; grandsons, David E. and Michael W. Perez and granddaughter, Melissa J. Perez, all of Woodland. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Michael Anthony Perez and Jaiden Timothy Coutee, both of Woodland. Also surviving him are his sisters, Marian Munoz and husband Jose of Woodland, Mary Almaraz of Gardina and sister-in-law, Marta Perez of San Jose. Mr. Perez was preceded in death by his brothers, Daniel Perez and Nate Perez; and sister, Jessie Flores. The vigil is scheduled at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Monument Hill Memorial Park, Woodland. McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
