May A memorial service to honor the life of Jack Irvin May, who died June 1, 2000, will be held Saturday at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St. Born June 14, 1916, in Stockton, he was 83 years old. When he was born, he held the record as the largest baby in the state, at 14 pounds, 7 ounces. The record may still stand today, May's family says. He lived in San Leandro from 1917 to 1929 and in Davis from 1929 to 1934. Before graduation, May joined the U.S. Navy Reserves and on Jan. 2, 1941, was activated into the Navy to train pilots. From there, May went overseas to Hawaii from early 1944 to September 1945. In 1955, he returned to Davis with his wife Ruth and family. He joined the UC Davis physics department for five years, then transferred to agricultural engineering, where he worked until his retirement on Oct. 1, 1980. During his tenure in agricultural engineering, May was instrumental in developing and building two poultry centrifuges that are still in use today. As a machinist, he also was instrumental in developing the shaker machinery for The Boysenberry Project and the other shaker mechanisms. Upon his retirement, he became active at the Davis Senior Center, traveled extensively with his wife up and down the Northwest coast, was an avid bowler and gardener, and took much pleasure in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, to whom he was married 61 years; his children, Toni Lorene May and her husband Gary Roland and Bruce Alison May and his wife Victoria; three grandchildren, Sheila Beall, Stacy Roman and her husband John and Robert Neely and his wife Tori; five great-grandchildren, Justin, Corrie, Lindsay, Johnny and Cassie Jo; and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by his son, Jack Marshall May. A memorial service to honor his life will be held Saturday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Davis Community Clinic.
