    3. Hi Am not related but have mined San Joaquin County turf in past (grew up there). As far as source of obits, according to Stockton Album Through the Years (V Covert Martin), there were 3 Stockton newspapers publishing in the following time frames: Stockton Independent (1861-1939), Stockton Evening Mail (1880-1917) and the Commercial Record/Stockton Evening Record/ Stockton Record (1888-to date). Other possibilities are Sacramento and San Francisco newspapers. One useful source of abstracts is at URL: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php?action=displaycat&catid=319 For the most part these are submitted by volunteers and so results may be somewhat uneven. Also for each hit, you have to open article and do a visual scan. You might also find something on Golden Nugget webpage: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~npmelton/index.html Using “mitchel” as search criteria I got numerous hits, but again you usually have to open each to get full content. One volunteer has posted Central CA marriage extracts, URL: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~npmelton/sacmarr10.htm Another approach might be to look at census data. I found no indication Henry was located in San Joaquin County in 1900’s. However, this data might be useful in narrowing search criteria and developing leads based on applying some logic. For example, there are a number of widows in the 1920 CA, San Joaquin County census, ages 41-66 (YoB ~1854-1879). Henry’s obit indicates his YoB 1870. Based on mores of the time it’s likely he married a woman close to his age or younger. Some of these widows have children that might have been conceived prior to Henry’s death. Also there’s an Edith H Hara in 1910 and 1920 census’ with daughter with name Helen Mitchel (listed as step-daughter of male Head of household) who was born about 1906. 1910 census indicates this was Edith’s 3rd marriage with the most recent one consummated about a year prior; i.e., remarriage could have been after Henry’s death early in 1909. As far as public library goes, I’m not a local but have used it on occasion in the past. They have a pretty good collection of directories for that era but it means manual search. And Henry’s appearance in one would contingent on his being located in Stockton for some reasonable amount of time prior to publication. Good luck Vern D ________________________________ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Sun, January 30, 2011 1:00:30 AM Subject: CASANJOA Digest, Vol 6, Issue 1 Today's Topics: 1. Henry H. Mitchel died in Stockton on 9 March 1909 (age 39) and he lived at 1220 E. Miner Ave with his wife. I have a copy of a couple of obits, passed down in the family, no name of newspaper or date. I also have a copy of his death certificate. His wife's name is not mentioned on any of these, but they say he was married and living with his wife. I would like to find a copy of his marriage certificate. There was no mention of any children, so I suspect that he may have married between 1900 and his death in 1909. His death certificate says that he had lived at the above address for 3 weeks. I don't know if he was newly married, or newly moved into Stockton, or had just moved within Stockton. He was a railroad night watchman. Is there an index of early California marriages somewhere? Or, does Stockton have a newspaper from that period? Would the public library be the place to search? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Marilyn Idaho

    3. Thank you so much for the information. I will try what you suggest. He has been found in Sacramento in 1890 and he worked for the railroad so maybe moved throughout the central valley, so I have leads to check out now. Again, thank you.
