This letter is, indeed, a treasure. My gr gr grandfather's brother William moved to California in 1856, and was in the Stockton area soon thereafter. He, too, was from Tennessee, and must have wondered the same things about where people had scattered to, and what Middle Tennessee was like after the War. Thanks so much for posting it. Hello List - The comments and suggestions on Elmer SARGENT 1884-1956(?) have been helpful. I've tried to followup on each, such as re-checking cemetery burials using a different cemetery list. The Voter Great Registers had several Elmers; one possibility was @ 118 J St., Sacramento, registered as a Townsend Party member --- that was a reminder of those political campaigns of the 1930's. My maternal grandfather James (one of Elmer's eight older siblings) earliest "note" was a July 1909 postcard from Sioux Falls (SD). By then, his mother Emma was an invalid, and the family didn't have a solution for her care. That burden mostly fell to Elmer and his father Amos. A Nov 1909 postcard from James' sister Ella said their mother Emma wouldn't be able to stay at home much longer, and she only knew Elmer half the time. Yet, their mother lived until age 77 in 1919 --- a year beyond her husband Amos who died debt ridden, owning a one-eyed mule, and similar. That was part of Elmer's first 35-years. The Elmer SARGENT 1956 San Joaquin Death Certificate has been on order several weeks from the SJ County. I've seen mistakes on past Death Certificates, including my mother's which said she was born in Michigan, rather than Iowa. It was long standing humor by my father that saying she was corn fed (Iowa), and he lassoed her while she ran wild in Mendocino County. This Elmer SARGENT search was rekindled a month ago because a distant cousin realized the Calif Death Index entry had possibly garbled his Month-Day entries for birth & death. Nevertheless, previously we never connected Elmer with California --- thus, two heads can be better than one. Sincerely yours, Wm Schultz, El Cerrito CA

I do know that the library no longer has the staff to provide obituary lookups. If no one volunteers, contact me at [email protected] with the information you have frm the death index and I'll attempt to get to Stockton in the next month or so. I would suggest that you order his death certificate directly from the county recorder....
