I'm reposting this because yesterday I really didn't give enough information and am going to chalk it up to being tired rather than being incompetent. It sounds better.<smile> I'm looking for my aunt who is supposedly buried in Stockton, California. Name: Berneice WATSON, born 1898-99. Her age when the 1915 census was taken was 16. Born in Maquoketa, Iowa, Jackson county. I don't have a death date but it seems to me I can remember seeing her in 1961. Married once to a DIEHL and I'm assuming she was married to my uncle. I don't know this for a fact. If in fact she was, then her name at the time of her death would have been Berneice OLSEN. Husbands name being Lyman [Ted] OLSEN. I'm not sure when he passed away or if he is buried with her. Father: Frank Marion WATSON born 1854 in Indiana Mother: Cecelia J. ROBERTS [Jenni} born Sept. 29, 1863 in Andrew, Iowa, Jackson county. Brothers and sisters: Laura, Virginia, Roselie, May, Bill, Ralph, Joe, Walter, Leo and Frank Jr. I hope that I haven't missed anything. Thank you for your patience. Donna --
Donna, I am in Illinois so can't do any legwork for you, but will mention that I found myself in similar situation. My great great grandmother did not appear on the CADI and I was quite certain that she had died in CA. It turns out that she had died while visiting relatives in another part of the state and then the body was removed to her hometown for burial. Somehow she was missed on the index. I finally found her by calling the cemetery where I had determined her spouse was buried--she was there also. I have an aunt who I know is buried in Stockton, California. I should say, I beleive she is buried there. I can't find her on the CADI, and I've tried every name I can think of. Her maiden name and both married names. I have no death date for her, however I do have a picture that is dated 1961. I'm hoping that's when the picture was taken and hadn't been sitting somewhere and finally developed in '61. There is no one left alive to ask. I don't know how many cemteries there are in Stockton or if there is anyone reading this that might be from that area that could help me. I'm in Iowa and not likely to get to Calif. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appeciate hearing them. Thank you. Donna --

Those buried at the State Hospital on California Street were moved to the current Rural Cemetery on Cemetery Ln in Stockton. There is sometimes a bit of confusion.. there was more than one "State" Hospital. In 1919 you would probably be speaking of the Current (now closed for most part) State Hospital Grounds. The State Hospital grounds are now being used by a university (Phoenix U) as a satilite facility. A few buildings are used for mental health.. the cemetery portion is now closed.. The rural should have a list of those who were moved. There is still a small portion of folks still buried at the SHosp grounds. There is a list.. but the wherabouts is hard to find.. I have been told the Health Department on Hazelton st has it.. I have been told Rural has it, I have been told county Hospital in French Camp has it.. etc.. There is/was a cemetery at French Camp County Hospital.. that was moved to make room for expanding hospital.. graves moved to French Camp cemetery & another one out by the hospital. Potter's field may have been the French Camp hospital grounds. One other place it could have been... St Joseph's Medical center is built on property that was once a cemetery.. graves were moved to Rural.. some nice movers.. moved the stones first.. Graves were not all located.. so some stones were put in an old shed.. or placed with no body. Your best bet is to try for an obit.. it will give actual burial location. If it is Rural cemetery.. you will find them very helpful. Here is a list of local cemeteries: STOCKTON RURAL 2350 Cemetery Lane Stockton, CA 95204 (209) 465-5213 very helpfull. Be patient, only one person usually on duty in office at a time. PARKVIEW 3661 E French Camp Rd Manteca, CA 95336 (209) 9821611 SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY GENERAL HOSPITAL 500 W Hospital Rd French Camp, CA 95231 (209) 468-2000 (gen info line) Not sure if a letter to coutny hospital will be returned (they are busy there). Also.. not sure who is buried there.. but there is a chineese cemetery at Matthews Road and the frontage road to I-5 in French Camp.. Just Southeast of the Hospital Road grounds... I have never stopped there (very seldom go out that way any more). The San Joaquin Historical Society may have more on this. In the research for relatives of my wife, I have had a problem that now may be close to a solution. It is one of her uncles, who emigrated to USA in the early 1900's. We don't know how and when. The only clue we have had is a short letter he wrote from Russ House, Stockton in 1929. The text in the letter made us believe he lived a rather hard (and perhaps short) life, which could explain the total silence after that. He had seven brothers and sisters left in Sweden, to contact if he wanted to. Now, through the combined wonders of computerized archives and Internet, we have found him again in the form of an SSDI record, which states that he died as late as 1970 in Stockton (sic!). Of course our main interest is to find out if he ever had a family, with children or other relatives that we could contact to get to know more about his life in USA. These are the known facts. Name: Edward Anderson Born: 15 March, 1885. SSN: 555-03-7327 Residence (according to SSDI): 95204 Stockton, San Joaquin, CA. Died: August 1970. Is there any way for me to get to know more about this person, and his possible family? - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----

I don't know if this is the right list to post this, but here goes: In my files for years has been an old photo of which I could never place the origin. In the past few weeks I have learned that one of my ancestors came to the Stockton area in 1849 and stayed the rest of his life, until his death in 1905. Notes that I have uncovered said that among other things he had a Chinese cook, and other Chinese working for him. I now think the picture, which is of a Chinese boy, might be associated with this family. The only way I know to describe the photo is that it is a portrait, obviously taken by a professional photographer, whose name is Hing Cheong. Underneath his name is the word "photographer", and under that are the words "Koonsai Soochaw". All this is in English lettering--to the left of it are Chinese characters. If I had to guess at the date of the photo I would guess the1880s or 1890s. It is mounted on a heavy card. The boy would appear to be about 12 or 13, possibly a little older. He is wearing what I would suppose is traditional Chinese garb- a full length robe of some kind (it almost looks quilted) on top of which is a sort of vest, fastened in the front by a set of what might be hooks. He is standing on what might be an inlaid or parquet type of floor and has a stuffed dog, poodle-like, standing at his right side, the animal coming up to about his knees. I'd be grateful for any enlightenment on any of this. Thanks, John Ottinger Madison, WI
