Mr. Freshour was employed by the city for 30 years. He enjoyed camping along the coast in his motorhome and being with children. Mr. Freshour is survived by his wife, Gladys Freshour of Lodi; a son, Jim Freshour of Lodi; a daughter, Delores Freshour of Lodi; two brothers, Charles Freshour of Lodi and Walt Freshour of Lindsey; a sister, Pearl Keller of Las Vegas; three grandchildren and one great grandson. The graveside service is 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cherokee Memorial Park. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesday at Lodi Funeral Home.

Hi, I need the advise of someone who knows a bit more of Stockton's history than I do. My Grandfather died in 1923. According to his obit. in the Stockton Record his funeral was held "at the chapel of Pope & Smith, Fremont and California streets. Cremation in Parkview Cemetery." Parkview's records show that they turned his remains over to Pope & Smith and no one knows where he is buried. My question is, who took over the business of Pope & Smith and when? I don't recall a funeral home on the corner of Fremont and California so I'm wondering if they went out of business who would have their records? Thanks for your help. Debbie

Like your grandfather, my great-grandparents Isabelle and Jasper Burkett died in Stockton in 1927 and 1928. Pope and Smith conducted the services and both were cremated at Park View. I have checked with all relevant cemeteries and no one has any knowledge. Some years ago I spoke with B. C. Wallace who took over the Pope and Smith location after P & S went bankrupt. He did not have their records nor know where they might be. He mentioned that Oscar Pope moved to Petaluma. Wallace thought Pope and Smith had their own crematory (possibly called the Columbarium or Stockton Crematory as my ancestor's death certificate shows). He thought this place was dismantled after the bankruptcy. No one that I have written to from the County Historical Society to the State Cemetery Board or anyone else has been able to help. My Mom said that as a little girl her mother took her to see the cremains. My mother's description was amazingly like Casa Bonita, but they said they do not have them, so like you I am still searching.
