Are the graves marked? You are saying this cemetery is on the grounds at Magnolia St? Linda
I'm looking for information on Evelyn Marie MATHEWS. She married Otto Satchuel DILLON in probably San Joaquin County, California. Evelyn was born on May 12, 1896 in California, died December 9, 1979 in French Camp, San Joaquin County, California and is the daughter of John MATHEWS and Mary PARMENTER. Otto and Evelyn had two daughters: Dulce "DeeDee" DILLON, b. September 15, 1912 in San Joaquin County, California; d. February 21, 1972 in San Joaquin County, California Elizabeth Betty DILLON, b. January 3, 1914 and married Elmer SHAW
Not sure if I ever replied to this or not... The Stockton State Hospital was in existance from 1854-1980ish.(sorry, can't recall just when it closed). In 1854 the old San Joaquin County Hospital was changed to Stockton State Insane Asylum. This was located on Hazelton St, if my memory serves me correctly. Later they moved to Magnolia Street/Calif Street area. The address is still Magnolia Street for information, etc... For requesting patient information on those buried at the Old State Hospital cemetery: Stockton State Hospital 510 E Magnolia St Stockton, CA 95205 NOTE: This from a 1960 book. I know the phone book shows 511 E. Magnolia for offices of the State Mental Health Services as of today (2001) I will say I have had no success with those at this address. I am told the records are no longer there. If you have success in obtaining records.. would love to know. I am sending this to the lists because the OLD STOCKTON STATE HOSPITAL CEMETERY was used for those who died (some were workers) at the State Hospital Insane Asylum. This hospital was used for the ENTIRE State of California from about 1854-late 1800's.. when few other counties built their own hospitals. So saving this cemetery is of interest to ALL OF US! Please, write to your local government, state government officials.. let them know.. we need to save this & all our old cemeteries! This cemetery (as with many state hospital cemeteries) does not provide a list of those 3,500 still buried there... I am going to write a petition.. and will put it on the State Hospital page.. it will be sometime this week before it's ready, I will let you all know.. please print it, sign it and return to the address provided (on the petition). Hope we can get enough folks to write & make a difference in ALL California cemeteries. Hi all I wrote the following letter (somewhat changed to keep simple here) to the Stockton Planning Department, Anthony Pescetti, Barbara Matthews, Patrick Johnston, Gray Davis, Richard W. Pombo, and Barbara Baxter. These persons are listed in the Stockton Phone book, or you can visit the Calif government page for addresses. RE: Illegal use of Stockton State Hospital Cemetery property Dear ______________: This letter is to inform you that there seems to have been illegal use/building of the Old Stockton State Hospital Burial Grounds. It has come to our attention that the grounds of the cemetery are slowly being encroached upon by local offices and businesses. This cemetery is in danger of being completely obliterated by those companies that border the property. There is a law against using cemetery property for anything other than burial until ALL remains have been removed to another cemetery. As the information being forwarded to you shows, this has not yet happened. It is most certain that such a large undertaking would have made at least one newspaper in the past 90 years (3,500+ bodies would not be a small task to move). We would appreciate any help in correcting this error in judgement as soon as possible. We are not demanding that the changes/structures on the property be removed, but wish to save the small parcel that remains. This could be made into a memorial park for residents of the care home, or incorporated into Rural Cemetery located on the east border of this old burial ground are but a couple of the options that would be most beneficial to all concerned. Another concern is the lack of a list of the over 4,000 original burials (some having been moved in 1925-26 to Rural Cemetery). The State says these are considered medical records. These burials took place at least 90 years ago. This information needs to be made available to researchers. The information needed would be-- Name, date of death, age at death & where buried. This list could be retained at the San Joaquin County Historical Society, Rural Cemetery (favored option), or even at the State Archives. Thank you for any assistance in this matter. I may be reached at 209/ 603-0224 (cell phone with voice mail-- Stockton, CA phone number). Sincerely, Margie Campbell margecam@pacbell.net Here are the email addresses for most of the persons I mailed information to (I also contacted Anthony Pescetti by email, as he has an interest in saving the old cemeteries.. please show him you support this cause). Hi Liz & Others! My sources for information on the old cemetery are: STOCKTON ALBUM Through the Years; by V. Covert Martin, R. Coke Wood, Ph.D., Leon Bush, Stockton College, Stockton CA 1959 (pages 145& 146. The News article below. Two land deeds from when Karl Ross Post of American Legion purchased the land. Joe Holt, current member of the above AL post. Stockton/San Joaquin City/County directories from 1873-74 through 1896-97. There is a website where you can contact your area government representatives. I am not sure if it will help, but it can't hurt ... http://www.sen.ca.gov/ Please let them know that people are interested in saving this site, including making the names of those buried here available to researchers. Also, write to Legislature member Anthony Pisanthony anthony.pescetti@asm.ca.gov as he has a bill pending (now on hold) that is in referrence to historical cemeteries. Thanks all.. Every bit of interest will help. Below is a note that I wrote to Phil Van Camp last night, in reply to a note from him asking how I got the numbers for those who are buried at the site, since the records are private... >>> I have a newspaper article from the Stockton Record dated March 1, 1955 (page 17): Burial Ground Rezoning Plan Turned Down. Supervisors Return Proposal to Planners. Commerical rezoning of a former Stockton State Hospital burial grounds on N Calif. Street that won approval of the County Planning Commission in January was denied yesterday by the County Board of Supervisors. the petition of Karl Ross Post of the American Legion for the rezoning was referred back to the Planning group for reconsideration. Unanimous supervisor disaproval of the proposed zoning came after a lengthy report by county counsol Fredrick felton, who said such a reclassification would be illegal. Felton said that when the planning commission first considered the problem he did not have suficient information for a definite ruling that their action would not hold up under law. The 15-acre Legion property is on the east side of California Street, south of the Alpine Lumver company and west of Rural Cemetery. A trailer court now occupies much of the ground. Felton said that the five acres in which graves are located should be reclassified as cmetery and the 10 remaining acres should be changed to commercial zoning. The entire area is now in residential-suburban-farming zoning. The 15 acres were purchased by the state from Albina Sedgwick in 1875 for $2,700 and were used as a cemetery for 45 years with 4,467 burials. Use of the burial grounds was discontinued in 1919. In 1925 & 1926 some bodies were removed and cxremated, according to state records, but an estimated 3,572 bodies remain. Ther graveyard is in a state of neglect with the wooden markers burned off by grass fires, and no evidence of care of any kind Names of the persons still buried in the plot are in the records of Stockton State Hospital. ... Article goes on to say that Karl Ross bought the land & that there was a stipulation in the deed (which I have a copy of) that states that the land can't be used for anything other than a cemetery until the bodies are removed, which is persuant to law. The article also states that "Although the area was given blanket suburban farming zoning when the county zoning ordinance was adopted, this was in error, according to Felton, since the plot never has been abandoned as a cemetery." Due to a ruling earlier (1952), Karl Ross abandoned the plans to build on the property, after trying to have it rezoned by a judge. The judge (Baker) said that Karl Ross Post was to build a fence, and install a gate, then put up a marker or plaque stating that the property was the State Hospital Cemetery. This has to date not happened. Joe Holt with Karl Ross Post was at the purchase , court hearing & sale of the property in question. Joe says he personally looked through the book with the names of those cremated and moved to Rural (went into common grave). He told me there was over 875 names, he thought. The State has the information, except it feels it is HOSPITAL Records, not burial Records.. thus they are private & only a living relative can request them. I have had several people try for records, only to be told they are sealed & they can't have them, even though they are a descendant. I went today and purchased a map of the area (assessor's drawing) from last year. It shows that the land has been divided up and at least two buildings & a parking lot extension are on the land. Only about 1.39 acres are unused (from map). The first deed to Karl Ross says... "That a portion of the said real property has been used for cemetery purposes, and the portion of said property where human bodies are interred is set forth in the description of Parcel One above That this conveyance is made pursuant to the authority conferred by Chapter 891, statutes of 1949, and subject to provision that nothing in this conveyance be constured to permit the use of any land dedicated to cemetery purposes until human remains interred therein have been removed pursuant to law." There are two versions of this deed, I believe that it was rewritten (the wording is more professional in couple of instances, and the land description for the cemetery is more exact). Joe Holt says that a judge told them it was to be a cemetery forever in 1952.. should be a record of the instance other than the new deed. St. Joseph bought it in 1953, per Joe Holt. I didn't check this deed, as I have spoken with St Joseph facilities director & she says they sold that portion a while back. It is now owned by a Seattle firm, unless it was sold within past year. >>> There were also over 1,600 moved from the oldest cemtery on the asylum grounds in 1875, to this new facility. I believe these are included in the above count. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcampbel/Calif/ ----- Original Message ----- From: Liz Fairchild To: Margie Sent: Saturday, June 16, 2001 5:46 AM Subject: Stockton State Hospital. Hi Margie, I am really looking forward to finding out who owns this land. I don't recall if you mentioned how old the cemetery was...how old is it? Also,
Perhaps a note to our local congressman? Governor, etc? I did check for the current owner of the property today. The computer was down at the Assessor's office.. but the last recorded owner in print was a company in Seattle, WA. I am going to call them Monday to see if they are even aware a cemetery is there (probably are). I was told today that after 100 years of no burials, a cemetery is considered abandoned unless someone is caring for the property. I think this is what businesses are waiting for. I would say write to Congress, Senate, Governor, Legislature, Mayor, Reprsentatives, anyone you can to ask them to allow the names of those intured at this old cemetery to be recorded for the benefit of researchers. If the cause of committal is of a sensitive nature, then just the name and date of death & where buried. I would suggest Rural Cemetery (next to this old cemetery) should have the list, as many, many go in, write & call asking for family members who died at SSH. This way the records are not totally public. and Rural would treat with the respect that is used on the Rural burials. You can find your local government offices online (sorry, don't have the url) by doing a search for "California Government", and the url will come up. Maybe those of your with local newspapers on line that publish but don't archive their obits, might call and ask the paper if they have any plans to do so. The Modesto Bee has been since November of 1999 and I just discovered this online today for the Lodi NewsSentinel Starting today, Lodinews.com will post full obituaries online. We will also post funeral notices starting today. Past obituaries and funeral notices can be found in the Lodinews.com Archives http://www.lodinews.com/archives/ where you may search by date or by keyword. (Tip: Archive search results use headlines as links to the stories. If you search for obituaries by date, the person's name is the headline and is easily distinguished from other news stories in the search results. Click on the name to link to the obituary.) Obituaries archived prior to today contain only the first line or two of the obituary. Funeral notices prior to today are not archived.

Hi all... NOTE: Stockton State Asylum & Hospital recieved patients from all over California.. so this may be of interest to all with CALIF ancestors. I am still looking for names for those buried in the Stockton State Hospital cemetery on California St. This cemetery is still there, although it is now just a vacant lot strewn with litter. It is located behind the parking lot that is just south of Alpine Market (few blocks south of Alpine Ave.). I have a newspaper article & land deed documents that say the State Hospital has a list of those buried there. I have been told by those in charge of those records that there are none, only the actual medical records themselves. If any of you have any "pull" with the county/city would be nice to know if these still exist. Any lists I find either don't list deaths, or would only list those moved. If any of you have an ancestor who died between 1875-1919 and are supposed to be buried in Stockton, but no grave can be located... especially if they died at the State Hospital.. I would love to know. Only 850 or so were ever moved to Rural cemetery (cremated and put into common graves), so over 3,500 unnamed persons are buried at this site. That is a shame. Why do I seek these? Don't know.. none are my family, just seems that many were tossed away in life... now they have been tossed away and forgotten in death... We are talking about a great grandma who's hubby had her committed because she read "Those trashy romance novels", or because she was jealous... of his new younger woman... etc.. also men who were committed because they were "gold crazy"... probably had good gold mines.. and someone wanted the claim... so many reasons... some legit... hears voices all day.. says demons are after them... most for just being old, or of a different religion... religion was listed quite often. These unnamed deserve to be remembered in some way. Thanks Marge Campbell If you have information, you can call my cell phone @ (209) 603-0224.
