Hi Colleen.. I have this one.. I put a note online.. have to have ground rules.. life.. If you don't have anyone looking for obits in SJ.. I can do a few a week.. only a few. I am still looking for information on the State Hospital inmates... those who died there between 1854- 1919. If you or anyone runs across any obits or information saying someone was buried at the State Hospital.. need to know. The matter is before the city council as I speak.. they say several weeks to investigate.. so am being patient.. and looking for information as I wait. Also... the petitions online are getting response, and I get notes from those folks in my email daily. I also have a printed petition that I will send to any who wish to pass it around at work, beauty shops, etc... So, if any are interested, email me an address & I will put into mail with a return envelope, so it won't cost to get it back to me. This project is so sad.. no names, nothing.. hope city council will help with that.. Was told to write Barbara Matthews... did .. no response. Pombo and several others responded.. Here's a funny.... sent Gray Davis (you know the Governor) a letter, sent to his SF address (was recommended to be best address), and it came back...".. forwarding order expired..." Go figure! I also sent it to the Capitol.. no response yet ( only been 3 weeks). Hi all, Marge Campbell here: Is there anyone currently doing SJ obits? Death cert transcriptions? The transcriptions are absolutely out for me.. Only an hour at lunch.. takes to long to trudge the traffic to & from work.. then wait for the info. I can try to fit a few obits in once a week or so.. PLEASE... Have to set a few ground rules.. sorry.. but the cemetery & family business are taking time right now.. so: 1. Have a date for me, prefer from death index, if you can 2. If you are within 30 miles of Stockton & are not disabled.. library is open Saturdays. Free parking in front of library (1 hour), or parking meters within half block for about 50 cents an hour. 3. Only one or two at a time... NOW THE BIG NEED... BE PATIENT! I work full time, I have an hour at lunch and 2 hours on Saturday morning for research. It is a 25 minute drive to downtown Stockton from home in Lodi, CA. I don't ask for any money in return.. only that you do the same for someone in your area if you are able. I DO FORGET!! I do lose notes (not intentionally).. so if you don't hear back in say 2 weeks... email me... "hey Marge, remember me???" and I will put you at the top of the list.. I will get this Polinski obit Saturday. Can someone in or near the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library do me a favor? I just heard of a "Pioneer Card Record" that may have been filled out when a pioneer arrived in California. The info from those cards is in the "California Information File" available at, among other places, the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library. Apparently the original cards are considered to be "rare" and are kept in a secure area of the Sacramento library. Anyway, if someone could look up the California Information File and see if anything is available for Reuben Miller Dillon. He was reportedly born in 1832 in Kentucky and was married in 1857 in Amador County, California. I'm interested in finding out more about Reuben, especially his complete date and place of birth, his parents, and his siblings, if any. Thank you Bill Dillon (Reuben's great-great grandson)

I have a possible address for my ancestors in 1920 as 1113 N 1st Street, in Stockton. However, Ancestry.com has many many separate EDs shown for Stockton, and they do provide descriptions of the boundaries. However, I have no clue where 1113 N 1st Street might fall. Is there anyone on the list who is familiar with Stockton, who could look at Ancestry.com 1920 Stockton ED listings and tell me which one would include that address? Thank you so much for any assistance. Jackie
Does anyone have access to the 1850 census? I am looking for a relative who I think might have been with Mr. Sutter when gold was first found in CA. His first name is not given in any of the historical accounts of the discovery of gold. However, in the LDS census index in San Joaquin Co. in 1850 in Stockton Div. on p. 286 there is a John Gingary listed. I'd like to find his age and other members of his household, as well as his property valuation. My ancestor, John Gingery, disappeared from Ohio after the 1830 census, and I have never been able to find anything more about him, even though one account states he lived until 1863. He was a millwright, and the Gingery who was with Mr. Sutter was acting as his millwright, hence I feel this John in San Joaquin may be my ancestor. Richard
Death & dying is taboo... it should be a part of the local history... start local, then state, then nation, world, etc... What George Washington did is common knowledge, was for me.. so was bored when I had to study it in school. The museum was wonderful (1st & 2nd grade field trip). We saw the old Furniture of the Webers, the clothes Mrs. Weber wore.. we touched a mummy! We got to grind indian corn.. (no one talked about reservations & the hard times we brought the Native Americans back then).. I will always remember that part of history. I walk the cemeteries almost every day at work, either Rural or the Catholic here in Stockton (near to my work). I see the workers trying so hard to keep these cemeteries clean & watered. Then you see a stone smashed by vandals... so upsetting. My Mom's parents and a brother are buried here... far away from Indiana, so I always check them monthly or more often. They are in an uncared for part of Rural.. I take a trowell & clean the gopher dirt away. The care people will do it for you if you ask, but, I am there anyhows. The stories behind these graves is vast... The Terry plot... the untimely death because of the marriage to anothers exwife, etc. are known. Some don't think that this info is needed in teaching history.. or the man who rode a horse over 365 miles to let the government know an attack was coming... "California's own Paul Revere"... he is buried in Stockton, under a buliding now.. and just a plaque to mark his humble end. These people are our local history, the students need to walk the cemetery and tour graves to know who is there & what they have done for our city/state. This will give them a bit of respect for the cemetery & those stones they may some day decide to destroy. May never happen.. can you imagne Tommy coming home.. "Hey mom.. going on a field trip to the cemetery, will you sign?" I would love to see these trips happen, then have the student pick one person from a list of those who helped found/form this area... and find all they can, then do a biography on their person.. What a neat book to raise funds for the schools that would be!
