    1. [CASANJOA] REA, HAMMOND
    2. I am trying to find my REA and HAMMOND cousins in San Joaquin County. My great grand uncle, Clyde W. Rea, had a daughter named Jesse Lucinda Rea, born August 28, 1888 in New Ulm, Brown County, Minnesota. She married Elmer Royal Hammond April 15, 1911 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They moved to Stockton, California sometime after 1914. I have reason to believe other Rea relatives of Jesse's may have also moved out to the Stockton area. Jesse and Royal had four children, two of which are still living. The two who are deceased were: Roy Hammond, born July 9, 1912 in Minneapolis, and Lois Hammond, born February 26, 1914 in Minneapolis. Lois died in October 1952. Another family of the Stockton area that is somehow connected to my Reas is the Gogna family. Any Gognas in the area may be interested in getting in touch with me, as I have information about your Rea ancestry. Same goes for any Hammonds. Gary

There were representatives of several organizations there (including the one below... There were speakers from all walks of life there.. some had family who were mental patients, some were the patients... they were brave & came forward to tell of the treatment they recieved, and how badly the patients were treated even before they died...very moving. Senator Chesbro was very interested in going forward with the California State Hospital projects... so please support him and the following group... John Rodriguez (sorry, probably not spelled correctly) & another state of CA representative were there.. and promised to work with the Senator & the cemetery groups to find, extract & share ALL the burial records for the Hospital patients. The goal is to RESTORE all the cemeteries with full markers over the years. Support this effort please! Below is a note I recieved from one group.. 3. I recieved the following from Peggy at SSCDDMH... I am going to call Lori Monday. Marge Thank you for your email to Senator Chesbro regarding the upcoming hearing on 11/16. The hearing begins at 1:30pm. We will first hear from two other states who have undertaken restoration projects, followed by the State Department of Mental Health and the State Department of Developmental Services who will testify about the historic use and current status of California graveyards at these institutions, and finally we will hear from the CA Memorial Project about their efforts to begin restoration efforts in California. If you are unfamilar with this project, you may want to contact them (Lori Sheppard at 1-800-776-5746). Following these witnesses, we will take public testimony, at which time, we would be happy to hear from either or both of you. The Committee would be very interested to learn what you know about Stockton Developmental Center. If you have documentation, you can provide ahead of time, that would be great -- even if its only a bit more detailed description that you could send my by email. Please let me know if you plan on attending and testifying and I'll make sure you get a slot. 1. [CASANJOA] Great Register of San Joaquin Co.
    2. Gard Meddaugh
    3. Gentlefolk of the board, I recently asked of this body about the Great Register of San Joaquin County. The answers I received were even better than I first thought. The Great Register was created because of the registry act of 1866 but didn't start in San Joaquin Co. until 1867. It has been sent to the LDS library for microfilming so all info should be available at Family History Centers. I stopped by the San Joaquin County Library and learned that the register has been indexed but the first couple of volumes have been missing for some time. I was interested in times early on and was allowed to see the original register. This is an originally robust ledger now delicate with age. The records of those who registered were transcribed first by first initial of the last name then roughly chronologically. The first volume runs from 1867 to about 1871. It includes date of registration, birth state or country, age, occupation, township, naturalization and removal. What I learned concerned the following individuals: Charles Gard*, Joel Gard William Gauldan Webb James Webb* Jesse Webb* Thomas Jefferson Webb Alexander Webb* William Webb Isaac Webb* William Webb from Arkansas Samuel Jones Webb All those indicated with * "removed to Merced Co. Oct. 25, 1870". James was the father of Jesse, Thomas, Alex, William, Isaac and Sam. Charles m. James' daughter Nancy and William G. m. James' daughter Violet. William G. was removed at his death and Joel "removed Aug. 24, 1871". All Webbs returned to San Joaquin Co. as seen by James Webb's bio. from his 100th b'day party http://home.pacbell.net/gardm/stkrecrd.htm Charles moved on to Lake co. and Joel, I don't know. I believe the "removed" date was when a note was sent [or received] that the individual had registered in Merced Co. I descend from Charles and Nancy (Webb) Gard so this was good info. It is also another example of how extended families moved as a group. Now, to find the Great Register of Merced Co. and Lake Co. I have more info on most of the above and would enjoy hearing from anyone connected. cheers, Gard http://home.pacbell.net/gardm/gene.htm

    1. [CASANJOA] Re: Stockton State Hospital- Getting the laws ammended
    2. Margie
    3. Thank you for your reply. We have the information on how to obtain individual records on known persons. I would like the Costa Mesa information just in case someone asks for it. Have contact at Sonoma. Not all records were sent there.. some went to state archives, some to SJChealth dept...from what I recall. We are not looking for one individual. There are over 3,500 unknown persons buried in the old Stockton State Hospital cemetery. The names and information on their death/burials is considered part of the medical records for the state hospital. The law states that all public cemeteries must provide death/burial information to the public. The State of California sold this cemetery property to the American Legion (Karl Ross Post) in 1948... Karl Ross Post could not use the northern most 5 acres for anything but cemetery purposes until ALL bodies had been removed ... in 1955 the land was rezoned for commercial use... in error. A County Planner stopped the rezone & said it was illegal...only someone forgot to reclassify the land cemetery.. instead it was listed as residential/farming. A judge & two other persons with connections to Karl Ross Post, in a matter of a few hours in the judges chambers, managed to move all 3,500 bodies to a common grave.. nice feat, considering they never left the judges chambers. **all the above is documented. What the goal is, is to have the death/burial records for every person buried in the cemetery released. This means that the State will have to seperate (as it should have in the beginning) all this information from the medical records, and then make the cemetery burial records public. If we had the name and death date of every person buried in this old cemetery, we could look up death information.. but as it stands we have nothing, unless a descendant contacts us looking for a specific person. http://www.rootsweb.com/~moiron2 Iron County MO Web Page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcampbel/home.htm Margie Campbell's Original Web Page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcampbel/ Margie Campbell's NEW Site (under construction) HERMES surname maillist host WENSTRÖM surname maillist host ----- Original Message ----- From: "B&B Allured" <allured@jps.net> To: "Margie" <margecam@pacbell.net> Sent: Tuesday, November 06, 2001 9:06 PM Subject: Re: Stockton State Hospital- Getting the laws ammended > Your message was forwarded to me. Surnames: Bickford Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AY.2ADE/963.1.1.2 Message Board Post: Hello, I am the niece that's been researching our Bickford line. And actually the uncle's name was Ulmer, not Elmer. It's rather unusual because he was given two family surnames as his first and middle name; Ulmer Merrill Bickford. He was born 8-18-1884 in Stockton to Charles William Bickford and Mae Estelle (Worth) Bickford. Also born to this couple was Earl Worth Bickford 12- 24-1886 and my great grandmother Lila Mae Bickford 10-17-1893 (both also in Stockton). Ulmer and Earl both married but did not have any biological children. Lila married twice and had a daughter in 1918 by her first husband Joseph Ford (Verna Mae), and then my grandmother Lila in 1925 by second husband Dave S. Matthews. Great grandmother Lila died of toxemia during the birth of my grandmother 11-14-1925. To me it does sound like your Bickford line is different from the one I'm working on but I do have information regarding Charles' parents and siblings. E-mail me if you'd like more information. You might als! o want to send a message to Mahlon Bickford. He puts out a great Bickford newsletter and he might have more information about your line. Regards, Kelly deronkellywells@prodigy.net

Ithink the dates of death of your Elmer Bickford and mine, are somewhat far apart. My "uncle" Bick Died about Feb. 1957, I remember my mother informing me about it just as I retuned from over seas army duty. I will forward your adress to my neice. I haven't been in touch with her lately.I don't know how much time she has, to be doing geneology, as she has three little girls. Cheers Dave Matthews
