Brandon Longtime Davis resident and composer George A. Brandon, 76, died in his sleep in March 30, 2000, following a brief illness. He was born on Feb. 4, 1924, in Stockton, to Horace D. and Georgia C. (Pound) Brandon. He grew up in Stockton and earned a bachelor's degree in history at the College of the Pacific, now University of the Pacific, in 1945. He went on to earn a master's degree in sacred music in 1952 and a master's degree in religious education in 1957 at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. While at Union, he met Dona Lee Banzett, whom he married in 1954. In the late 1950s the Brandons taught at Eureka College in Eureka, Ill., and then at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where their only child, Barbara Anne, was born. The family relocated to Davis in 1962. In the late 1960s Brandon held positions at several Davis churches, including Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, Davis Community Church and St. Martin's Episcopal Church. His contributions to music at St. Martin's Church continued well beyond his employ there. He was instrumental in designing the church's Schlicker pipe organ, installed in 1982, and his compositions were often performed by the various choirs at St. Martin's, and by his wife, Dona, who was the organist and choir director there for 27 years. In 1994, he was commissioned by St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sacramento to write the ''St. Paul's Suite,'' an organ work based on the last chorus of Camille Saint-Saens' ''Christmas Oratorio,'' for a concert that celebrated the 80th anniversary of the installation of that church's pipe organ. He was a freelance composer, with more than 300 published compositions which include hymn-tunes and texts, choir responses, anthems, secular choruses and organ and piano pieces. His hobbies included family history and regional history. In addition, he researched and wrote about many aspect of church music and related fields, especially early American hymnody, a passion that continued up until his death. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dona Lee Brandon of Davis; his daughter, Barbara Anne Brandon Severin of Fairbanks, Alaska; and his sister and her husband, Sue and Otto Zimmermann of Modesto and their family. Plans are pending for a memorial service at a later date. Memorial donations may be sent to the Yolo County office of the Red Cross, Davis Community Meals, STEAC or CommuniCare Health Centers. It does not look good. She put a RAPID E-MAIL CUT-N-PASTE at the very bottom of the message. You may have time to send a snail mail letter. Paper in the hand is more effective than an e-mail in the computer. Faxes are also paper - good idea. But, send along the e-mail also. Certainly more than you want to know. Where we stand right now is, SB1614's required waiver has not been granted, but it could at any time. Then SB1614 will move quickly through the process. It could be heard as early as Wednesday 14 August in Assembly Appropriations. The following ALERT has been shared by our 'partners in opposition.' It is imperative we let the committee members know of our objects. ----Iris Carter Jones, Legislative Network Coordinator, CSGA. ACTION ALERT CALIFORNIA SB1614, WHICH WILL REMOVE THE CALIFORNIA BIRTH AND DEATH INDICES FROM THE PUBLIC DOMAIN, IS ON A FAST TRACK TO THE STATE ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS. IMMEDIATE ACTION IS NEEDED. Heavy opposition has been mounted to kill SB1614. However, in the event that our efforts fail, this bill will rapidly move to the California State Assembly Committee on Appropriations as early as August 14th. We cannot wait for any more committees to wheel and deal. Full access to the Birth and Death Indices is at stake. We must act now. It is vital that you call, fax, and E-mail ALL MEMBERS OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS IMMEDIATELY and urge a DO NOT PASS vote on SB1614. Tell the committee it must not spend taxpayer's money on a bill that won't do what it says it will do. SB1614 purports to solve the problems of identity theft by removing the birth and death indices from public domain. This bill is misdirected. It won't work because most experts agree that the majority of identity theft occurs through the literal theft of mail, purses, or wallets, through on-line and telephone scams, and occasionally through the misuse of birth and death CERTIFICATESNOT the indices. In support of this fact, both the Department of Justice and the States Office of Privacy Protection confirm that neither office has documentation that the indices have been used for identity theft. SB1614 will cost the state of California more then $2 million dollars in the first year alone. In addition, there will be *annual* local mandated costs which will run into multimillions of dollars. In California's current budget CRISIS, taxpayer's dollars must not be used to fund a bill that won't work. When he was born, he held the record as the largest baby in the state, at 14 pounds, 7 ounces. The record may still stand today, May's family says. He lived in San Leandro from 1917 to 1929 and in Davis from 1929 to 1934. Before graduation, May joined the U.S. Navy Reserves and on Jan. 2, 1941, was activated into the Navy to train pilots. From there, May went overseas to Hawaii from early 1944 to September 1945. In 1955, he returned to Davis with his wife Ruth and family. He joined the UC Davis physics department for five years, then transferred to agricultural engineering, where he worked until his retirement on Oct. 1, 1980. During his tenure in agricultural engineering, May was instrumental in developing and building two poultry centrifuges that are still in use today. As a machinist, he also was instrumental in developing the shaker machinery for The Boysenberry Project and the other shaker mechanisms. Upon his retirement, he became active at the Davis Senior Center, traveled extensively with his wife up and down the Northwest coast, was an avid bowler and gardener, and took much pleasure in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, to whom he was married 61 years; his children, Toni Lorene May and her husband Gary Roland and Bruce Alison May and his wife Victoria; three grandchildren, Sheila Beall, Stacy Roman and her husband John and Robert Neely and his wife Tori; five great-grandchildren, Justin, Corrie, Lindsay, Johnny and Cassie Jo; and numerous other relatives. It should make it easier to find burial information for those buried on state hospital grounds, or in state hospital cemeteries. If you have an ancestor who was unfortunate enough to die while in a state asylum/hospital before 1900, it is virtually impossible to find their burial place, unless you have a copy of the death certificate. You may then find a burial place listed... but if it says it was at a state hospital cemetery, you will most likely not see a grave, as the state only put up markers (usually wood) with a number on it... no name, nothing. All mental hospital files were made private, so you can't get any information from the state on burial site, etc. either. This bill makes it law that all state run cemeteries must be kept in good condition (not allowed to be run into the ground like they are now), and that a record of every name will have to be made available (which are to include birth, death information as would a death certificate). This will be a huge help to genealogists and researchers everywhere. It will also bring a bit of dignity to those thousands upon thousands who were unfortunate enough to be buried in unmarked graves while under the care of the state. Many other states already have these laws in effect. For more information you can go to: http://www.pai-ca.org/ Protection & Advocacy or http://www.cnmhc.org/main/ California Network of Mental Health Clients Both of these sites have more information. The closing ceremonies for the Viet Nam Memorial Moving Wall will be at 10:00 am tomorrow morning (Friday August 2, 2002). There will be many guest speakers, including a decorated veteran from Stockton. If you have not viewed the wall & are within driving distance, please, keep the kids out of school & bring them down. The wall is open 24 hours. They were very busy today, but still lots of free parking & there is no admission charge. No one asks for donatations, but if you can, there is a little post with a slot for them. This is a wonderful way for home schooled children to learn a bit of history. A wonderful field trip. I will be at the ceremony tomorrow... digital camera in hand. I have taken some photos & will put them on a tribute page to the wall & my cousin Johnny Lawrence Edwards, who never made it home. The nitetime viewing is well lit & cooler than daytime. Rubbings are allowed, with all supplies provided free of charge. Hi I just returned from viewing the VietNam Memorial wall in Lodi. It will be on display thru Aug 2nd. It is located off Hwy 99 at the Harney Lane exit. Cherokee Memorial park cemetery. Follow the signs to the entrance... it is open 24 hours until it closes to go to next stop. It was very moving to view all those young mens names. I got rubbings (supplies provided free) of the men I wanted. There are military equipment displays, and Cherokee is going to start a new "park" for veterans (I think that is what she said, only military, fire, police, etc., but may be wrong).. there are three beautiful bronzes in honor of those who have served the country in one way or another. You should see them... just beautiful! If you get a chance to come by... please do so... it's 24 hours and well lit... so arrival time is not a problem. They are in process of reading all the names of the men from CA (over 5,000)... they were on Colton, CA (going by city) when I was there this morning. This would be a wonderful field trip for students. Hi Thought I would let you all know that the miniature VietNam Memorial Wall arrived in Lodi, San Joaquin County, CA yesterday, and will be here for about a week. I will be there today, to get a free rubbing of my cousin and some other friends who didn't come home. The National Guard will be reading off the 5,000+ names of the Californians who died in Viet Nam this weekend, they will then start again with those who died within a certain distance from Lodi.
