Hello, Sorry that this is off-topic, I don't know who else I could ask about this. Is anyone out there familiar with old-fashioned nicknames? The reason why I ask is because I have 3 CDV's and a tintype of the same woman who I think is one of my 2nd great-grandfather's sisters. Written on the back of one CDV is this: For Charlie from your sister "Hulda" (the name Hulda was in quotation marks). I know the picture was for my 2nd great grandfather Charles William Bickford. His sisters' names were Elizabeth E., Augusta E. and Sarah M. (I don't know yet what the middle initial stood for). Does anyone know what "Hulda" could have been a nickname for? Thanks so much for your help, trying to figure this out is really bugging me. Regards, Kelly

Hi Barbara, I guess the messages overlapped - my computer has been down and I've been on a friend's. I guess I'll go look for a previous message since I started at the bottom of the list when getting on line today. I always respond to the list so the messages are archived for others to read later.....especially if I've provided data for someone, I don't want to look up the information to send it to a new researcher. That's why the archives are so important to search prior to posting a query on a list and that's why reading the messages for a few days or a week if the list isn't very busy is so important prior to posting a message - you wouldn't have responded the way you did to my original suggestion. As a long time researcher and with access to the internet you probably have discovered the NORCAL library which is a great source of what's available in CA. If not, here's the address http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~yvonne/NORCAL%20index/ As list administrator for the CADI mailing list and a volunteer in Stanislaus county I have way too many emails asking for help and for the most part everyone is very friendly because they appreciate the help. Sorry you caught me on your bad day. Here's the website for the San Joaquin Geneaological Society - if you have contacted them, they might be able to help with your query http://www.rootsweb.com/~sjgs/ and rootsweb.com http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/CA/SanJoaquin/ and the San Joaquin GenWeb page http://www.rootsweb.com/~casanjoa/ Colleen 11/17/2002 10:28:06 AM Pacific Standard Time From: searcher_22@hotmail.com (Barbara LaMarche) To: Coenorby@aol.com Since you posted our whole dialog on the list, wonder why you didn't add my last reply too you? From what I have seen.. after a certain amount of time, if no family can be found, all assets (land, etc)are sold and the proceeds go to the state. Perhaps someone else on the list can tell you more. Now, if you don't know where your ancestor is buried... or no burial place was given, he may still be at SJGHospital! They have a large amount of cremains still waiting to be claimed. You can call the Hospital (they have a website) and ask for Pathology. Ask them to check for the person in question.. if they have the cremains there... you can claim them (the hospital will tell you how to do this). From what I can tell at Mapquest.com... 41 N Hunter is the waterfront. There used to be hotels (apartments) there at one time, if I recall correctly. You could have someone check the history of that address at the county records office, starting at the assessor's office.. looking up the address, finding the parcel number, then going to the recorder's office & checking all data for that parcel number.... all sales & changes to that parcel will come up...you can then order the records. I think they are 50 cents or $1. per page... no more than a dollar tho... I have ordered them for a project I am working on... like 1.62 for two pages... couple years ago. Hope this helps. Excuse me Barbara, but you asked for information and I gave you a website where you could search early CA deaths. Yes the website is a paid site but it also has free entry - you just have to give them a name and email address....the website provided is FREE for CA deaths, yes you have to navigate and deal with popup messages but if you really want death dates it's where you should go to look. I'm just a volunteer trying to help those that post to the list. If you had been on the list for any time you would have seen that all my posts are helpful and they usually involve lookups. I guess I'm really tired of badly written queries that aren't specific as to what data is being searched for and your little message below wasn't welcomed. You obviously have found some 1880 census information, probably for FREE off the LDS site and instead of seeing if these people still are in the area in 1900, 1910 etc. you ask for any information 1880 - ? SO I gave you a website but I admit that I didn't specify what you could find there - but's it's been shared before on this list - have you searched the archives of the list to see if anyone else has every inquired about your surnames? Here's the website....http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl the name of the list is CASANJOA-L When you search the archives for you surname, you might want to put in NORBY - here's the count each year of how many messages I've responded to with help - I had to go back to work full time in March of 2000, that's why the percentage of messages I answered dropped off considerably in 2001. 1999 Query: norbyMatching Record Count: 129 Total Retrieved: 25 Interpreted Query: norby Total Database Records: 276 2000 Query: norbyMatching Record Count: 284 Total Retrieved: 25 Interpreted Query: norby Total Database Records: 505 2001 Query: norbyMatching Record Count: 102 Total Retrieved: 25 Interpreted Query: norby Total Database Records: 459 2002 Matching Record Count: 65 Total Retrieved: 25 Interpreted Query: norby Total Database Records: 495 Colleen Original Message: ----------------- From: Barbara LaMarche searcher_22@hotmail.com Date: Thu, 14 Nov 2002 14:08:53 +0000 To: norby@ainet.com Subject: RE: [CASanJoaquin] Kallenback(h)/Horstmeyer I don't appreciate your solititation.
