I know you can't in Sacramento unless you are just looking for Sacramento records, and those are in a different location. Vital Statistics for the entire state can only be accessed via letter or fax to my knowledge. But if you are going for San Francisco deaths you can (I think) go to the County Court house. Anyone who knows set me straight.
