    3. Jim, The Inmate Registers were prison specific. Which prison did you receive information from? In 1900, there were only two prisons in California - San Quentin and Folsom. At Folsom, the Inmate Registers are alphabetical, but chronologically listed within each letter of the alphabet. This means that each request that does not have specific information as to when the inmate was received and processed into the prison requires a thorough review of the registers pages until the name is located. Often there are duplicate names so it is important to know from which County they were sentenced. Sometime around the late 1890s, Folsom also acted to hold Federal inmates - mail fraud, etc. They came in not only from California but also from Oregon and Nevada.
