Hi all; Time for our weekly "What's Happening" on the website. So here is what is going on: First of all, those that have WebTV have been having problems accessing the site as it is too wide for their set. We are aware of this, although there is nothing that we can do as the template and the amount of information on it are too wide. This is similar to the several other sites that you cannot access for the same reason. I apologize for this inconvenience, but there is no way to correct this. * * * * * Now for the good stuff... The following counties or partials have been completed: Butte Book One Colusa Book One and Two Los Angeles Book Two Madera Marin Book One and Two Mariposa Mendocino Riverside San Benito San Bernardino Book One San Diego The following Counties are in the transcriptions phase: Amador Butte Book Two Humboldt Kern Los Angeles Books One, Three, Four, Five and Six Nevada Orange Placer San Bernardino Book Two San Francisco Books One and Two San Luis Obispo Santa Barbara Siskiyou Sutter Tehama Tulare The counties that have been ordered are: Fresno Lake Modoc Shasta Yolo Yuba IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE COUNTY YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, GO TO THE WEBSITE AND THE FRONT PAGE WILL TELL YOU THE STATUS OF THAT COUNTY. * * * * * Several people have asked if we would do lookups. Unfortunately, our answer has to be no as the records are spread all over the US in various stages of transcription. Also, unfortunately, you will have to wait till they are online. The volunteers are typing as fast as their little fingers can go and we are getting the records online within days of completion of a book or county. Sorry, but you have waited this long, a little longer and you can look. * * * * * Speaking of volunteers, we have over 100 working on this project. Understand that these records are old (100+ years) and sometimes hard to read. Also understand that we think this project is really important because the records are only required to be kept from 1905 forward. Anything before that time can be gotten rid of WITHOUT NOTICE because they were not required. One we have them online, they cannot take them away from us and they are free for the looking. All of our volunteers are incredibly special people to help with this project and donate their time and efforts. Periodically there are a few that really stand out and I think they deserve special mention. First is Betty Vickroy. Betty must have the fastest fingers in town. She has completed six full batches and is still going. She has worked in San Diego, Riverside, Los Angeles and Nevada counties, as well as typed ALL of Marin county. She is my "pinch hitter" when I only need one more batch in a county or when somebody has given up on trying to transcribe a certain batch. She is one incredible lady and GREATLY appreciated by all. We also have Sharon Dulcich, who not only got us access to Kern County records, but photo'd all of them and now is transcribing all of them. She deserves a definite extra pat on the back for all this effort that she has put forth. We have Dorothy Oksner, who not only helped to sponsor Santa Barbara County, but is coordinating the genealogical society there to do all the transcribing and staying on top of them all to help to make sure that all is going well. Thank you Dorothy for all you are doing. Beverly Stone has been working with El Dorado County, which she accessed the records for and is currently transcribing all by herself. She is also working with Sacramento county to get copies of those registers for us so that we can get those transcribed and online as well. Thank you Beverly for all your work. There are several others...including those who don't even live in California. We have transcribers in Washington, Nevada, Oklahoma, Virginia, Arizona, Kansas, Idaho, Utah, Missouri, Oregon and Louisiana. And we have received donations from all over the world for this project. We thank you all for your wonderful help and generous time. We are currently working with Richard Finn, President of the Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society to sponsor and transcribe the balance of the records for Alameda county. We hope this will turn out as well. * * * * * Donations for this project can be sent to the myself, the project coordinator at the address below. There is lots more to do and funding is required to cover the costs of copies of these records and postage to get the info to the transcriptionists. Your help, no matter how big or little, is desperately needed and incredibly appreciated. * * * * * For those of you that still do not know about the project, let me give you a brief rundown. We are working on getting all the records, from all counties, for the pre-1905 period online. We are currently working on the deaths and then will be working on the marriages and birth records.
