Janet: What remains of the early San Francisco Death Records varies. Some of the books are an Index only, while others are the actual Certifi\cates without an index. In some both the Index and Certificates are there. Since there seems to be quite an interest in what remains, I will list what the handout I got from the S. F. Dept. of Health says: DEATHS: Book 1 - Nov 8, 1865 to Sept. 30, 1869 - Index Missing - Records O.K. - LDS# 0975830 Book 2 - Oct 1, 1869 to April 30, 1873 - Index Missing - Records O.K. - LDS# 0975830 Book 3 - April 1, 1882 to June 30, 1889 - Index Missing - Records O.K. - Contains Coroner Cases Only. - LDS# 0975831 Book M - Aug 1, 1894 to June 30, 1896 - Index O.K. - Records O.K. - LDS# 0975832 Book O - July 1, 1898 to March 16, 1900 - Index O.K. -Records Missing - Not Filmed Book P - March 17, 1900 to Oct. 22, 1901 - Index O.K. -Records O.K. - LDS# 0975833 Book Q - Oct. 23, 1901 to June 30, 1903 - Index O.K.- Records O.K. - LDS# 0975834 Book R - July 1, 1903 to June 30, 1904 - Index O.K.- Records O.K. - LDS# 0975835 Book ? - July 1, 1904 to Jan 31, 1905 - Index O.K. - Records Missing - Not Filmed This handout sheet also states that they have Birth Records from July 1, 1905, to March 31, 1906. All other Birth Records prior to April 18, 1906, were destroyed in the earthquake and fire. It has been some years since I looked at the films and I do not remember if the location of burial in on the Certificates. I found my people on the films that were "Index Only," those gave the "Undertaker" but not the location of burial. One of my finds on the Index was a Stillborn Male Child and both parents names were given. Yes, the actual Certificate was filmed on those where the Records remain. I am copying this to both the NorCal and CaSanFran Lists in the hopes it helps others that are interested in these records. I hope this answered all your questions. Hi Janet-------- I have compiled the stated requirements /information fields that were included on the various vital documents recorded in California- from 1851 to 1919----------Birth, Marriage and Death....... http://www.cagenweb.com/mariposa/VITALS.html Here is what was asked for on a Death Certificate: For DEATHS: Entries of the date, and name, sex, age, color, single or married, occupation, nativity, disease, or cause of death, place of interment, and the date when the record was made." Have fun! Carolyn http://cagenweb.com/mariposa/ > > In a message dated 3/21/02 4:42:27 AM Pacific Standard Time, JANR67A writes: > > Thanks for this posting ...
