I was able to obtain the obituaries and other information for you. Will be mailing to you shortly. Highlights: Mrs. Chas. DE LONG (Elida F. VINEYARD) died 9-25-1895. She was the widow of Charles E. DE LONG, who during Grant's term was appointed US minister to Japan and held this office from 1869 to 1873. Mrs. DE LONG was born in Madison WI in 1814, the daughter of Col VINEYARD. Her father came to CA across the pains and located in the southern part of the State. In 1862 she married Mr. DE LONG. She was one of the first white women who, as a Minister's wife, was received at the Mikado's court. She was sister-in-law to the unfortunate Lt. G. W. DE LONG who had command of the New York Hearld Polar expedition that sailed from San Francisco on the "Jeannette" in July of 1879. His vessel was crushed in an ice pack and he, with Surgeon AMBLER and 13 of his crew, perished in the Artic. Mr. DE LONG died in 1876 leaving her a great deal of money and property, but she was tricked by a number of individuals who made claims against the estate and almost beggared herself and her children.
