After hanging on to this 90 lb.chunk of marble for so long, while living in small apartments at one time and getting 'you're-weird' looks, it's nice to give this tombstone a bit of life. One small caveat. While I'm sure George is correct in establishing the name as "Burnett" I must again say that the name on the tombstone is "Bur**ett. This is an 8-letter name not 7. I know spelling errors have occurred on tombstones, but the gouged area definitely accommodates 2 letters not just 1. Also the first name is (Ch)arles. So I guess the legal name must have been Charles Cleveland Burnett. I've responded directly to some, but anyone who would like to send me something on this child or family, please feel free to do so. It would be great fun and gives this little boy a bit of belated respect. And he should indeed be formally listed as a deceased son of San Francisco! One responder indicated that the tombstones were used as rip-rap and water breaks, another as paving stones in golden gate park. It's my understanding that many of the cleared cemeteries became the parks that dot some of the hills of San Francisco. Perhaps the Parks & Recreation Dept of San Francisco knows the exact history, or there's book or site somewhere that talks about it.
