STONE, son of the dead pioneer millionaire, has petitioned to be declared insolvent. His liabilities amount to $204,000 while his assets are practically nothing as his real estate valued at $108,000 is mortgaged for $135,000. Stone succeeded three years ago by the death of his father, to a fine hardware business, but bad management forced him to retire more than a year ago. He plunged into country real estate speculation and soon sank all his money. He owes the London and San Francisco bank $24,000, while a claim of $14,000 by Donahue, Kelly & Co. is unsecured. Stone cut a big social figure and indulged in many extravagances. He gave the Bohemian club last Christmas Sanford's painting of the Spanish ballet dancer, for which he agreed to pay $900, but the picture dealer is among is creditors.
