Hi I am new to this list; I live in New Zealand and don't know much about research in the USA. I am trying to confirm whether Joseph Walter WRIGHT is one of my ancestors. My Joseph WRIGHT was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1881 and was living in South America when his father died in 1917. I have just found a will here in NZ for a Joseph Walter WRIGHT who died in San Francisco, CA in 1950. How do I go about getting a death certificate or some other document to confirm who this person is? Many thank in advance Catherine Auckland, New Zealand.
The California Death Index contains the following: Wright, Joseph W. DOB 1 Jan. 1880 DOD 5 July 1950 Place of Death: San Mateo County (next door to San Francisco) Birthplace: Somewhere other than the U.S. You can order the death certificate from California Dept. of Health Services; here is the web site: http://www.dhs.ca.gov/chs/ovr/ordercert.htm Or you can get it faster from Vitalchek, but it will cost more: http://www.vitalchek.com Regardless of where you order the death certificate from, you will want to order an "informational copy," which contains the same information as the regular certified copy, but the application requirements are less stringent. Are death certificate extractions still permitted? This would get the information to the lady in NZ much quicker and at little or no cost. I remember a very nice volunteer who was able to do this in San Mateo for people some years ago. I think her name was Chris. I have been off the list for a while so things may have changed.
