Thanks for responding - "Shawl Store" ... I can see where the writing looks like 'shawl', and perhaps, because they were Jewish, they sold prayer shawls and other religious items...just speculation, of course. However, I can't help but think that 'shawl store' heightens the mystery - imagine a wealthy man by any standards ($50,000 worth of real estate, $100,000 of personal estate in that 1870 Census) and with 5 children - making a living by selling 'shawls'... must have been a high fashion item at that time. (grin) Seriously, I do appreciate the suggestion - I will see what I can find that fits with this possibility!
