Hope that helps, MeLani

    1. Rosenbatt / Rosenblatt family - 1870 Census - 2nd Precinct, 12 Ward, San Francisco (for TREAHY)

    3. Greetings - I'd appreciate the assistance of any listmembers who have access to the 1870 Census (on Ancestry or elsewhere) - I need help in de-coding the handwritten 'occupation' of S. ROSENBATT on page 49 of that Census. The surname was really 'ROSENBLATT' - but is written 'ROSENBATT' in this census - without the "L". I think the occupation reads "Wh & Ret" (presumably Wholesale and Retail) - and then something that looks like "Shawl Stone" ... but I'm not familiar with those terms, so not sure what that might be. My gr-grandmother, Alice Treahy, is one of the 4 Irish domestic servants working for this family in 1870, and I'm curious about Mr. Rosenblatt's business. This family seems to have been quite prominent in SF in the years following 1870, and though some of their sons became wine merchants in later years, I believe the family had another business in 1870. I've found numerous reference to the Rosenblatt family in SF in subsequent years, after my gr-grandmother was married to Richard Cullen STEWARD in 1872 and no longer working for them - so I don't need that info. However, I would be very grateful to connect with anyone who has access to resources from this period that would tell me more about this family circa 1870 - or photos of them or their home or business - in the 1870s. Are there any city directories or other sources remaining that would tell me if Alice TREAHY was in San Francisco before 1870? Does the TREAHY name appear in SF before 1870? (spelling variations include TREHY, TRAHEY, etc) (Note: Alice Mary Treahy was born in Ballingarry, Limerick Co, Ireland in 1847, and I've never been able to find out how she got herself to San Francisco by 1870 - any suggestions or insights on that aspect of her life are most welcome too!) 3. There are only 8 not 12 wards for San Francisco in 1870. Also consider the written versus stamped page number to help those of us who might take a look via browse mode, since I can find no S Rosenbatt for this census year.
