To Lori in Seattle WA mailto:[email protected] I have copied the material that you requested and will be mailing it to you shortly. Meanwhile, here are some highlights .... James Henry Hatch, DDS, has been a resident of the Pacific Coast since 1853 and has been engaged in the practice of dentistry since 1859. He was born in Williamstown, VT, in 1839, the son of Henry L. Hatch. Henry was one of the pioneer viticulturists of the state, his wines in Nevada county having a valuable reputation, even all over the coast. In 1885, Henry took the premium for the best Port and Angelica wines at the State Fair. He is now a resident of the lemon and raisin districts in Tulare County. James H., our subject, received his early eduaction in the public schools of Waukegan, IL. His parents had moved there when he was 5 years old. At the age of 14, in 1853, he came with his mother and family to California, his father having alread come to the Coast in 1850. In 1859, he commenced the study of denistry in the office of Dr. A. Chapman, a well-known dentist of Nevada City. He studied with him for three years. James then went to Philadelphia where he entered the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery and graduated in 1863. For a year he practiced in Carson City, Nevada, and another year in San Francisco. He then went to Portland OR where he practiced for 7 years. In 1876 he returned to San Francisco. For two years he was connected with the Clinical Board of the College of Dentistry of the University of California. You mentioned in your letter of request that you had access to the pre-1940 CADI. I did check and Dr. Hatch died in San Francisco on October 11 1921. I didn't check for an obit since I assume you were not interested in that. from the World Tree on Ancestry.com it appears that James was married in 1866 to Mary Shuffleton Tracy. His father is listed as Henry Lewis Hatch (born March 22, 1814; died Oct 6 1892) and his mother is listed as Elizabeth Warburton Jeffords (born April 6, 1816;died 1908) If you want, I could check for possible obit on Henry Lewis Hatch since he died in CA. Not sure if his wife did as well, but that could be established by a look at the CADI for her. Also, you may want to look for death date on Mary (Tracy) Hatch. It does not appear they had any children. The 1920 Census (a year before he died) shows he was a widow so Mary must have died prior to 1920.
