    3. ProQuest has added articles for the San Francisco Chronicle for 1900-1922, with plans to add 1865-1899! ProQuest is available through participating libraries, such as the San Francisco Public Library (and can be accessed at your own computer). If you do have access, once you are in ProQuest, choose "News - Historical San Francisco Chronicle" from the "Database" drop-down menu in the Search sections. You need to do this BEFORE you go to the "Publications" tab. Under that tab, you can browse articles by date. Ron Filion sfgenealogy.com

    1. [CASANFRA] San Francisco Chronicle, 1900-1922 -- San Francisco PL cards

    3. Apparently this is still in the "coming soon" stage. But I was wondering... SFPL site mentions that anyone can get a visitor's library card "for a fee." No where do they bother to cost that fee or categorize whether the card has full privileges, such as home access to Proquest. Occasionally I get to the City and could actually apply for a card. Can anyone tell me what he cost of the "visitor" library card is and what one gets for having one? 3. I believe that if you live in the Bay Area, and maybe even elsewhere in the state, you may be able to get a card from SFPL for free. I might have gotten special privilege because of being disabled but I do not think so. I live in the East Bay and have a free SFPL card that I use regularly to access newspaper and census records online from home. Why not just write them, or call and ask? I found the staff there to be quite helpful. Contact info is on the website. I also could not get the SF Historical tip to work...Proquest said "Coming Soon". 3. Hi Ron, I have access to Heritage Quest Online through my local library but I couldn't find the articles you mentioned. I was hoping it would be available since this is a ProQuest site. Do you know if there is a way to gain access through Heritage Quest? I clicked on the ProQuest link (home page) but couldn't find a Database drop down menu. I would love to browse some of these issues. 3. Dante, Proquest and Heritage Quest are independent databases, not one and the same, but easy to get confused as the names of both end with "quest". Proquest, I believe, is newspapers (or mostly so), and Heritage Quest is other historical documents, including census records, Freedman's bank, PERSI, etc. With regards to the dropdown box, I believe the problem many of us are having is due to SFPL (and possibly other libraries as well) not updating their database listings to either have a general category of Historical Newspapers, or a specific entry on their Database page for the SF Chronical. Maybe they haven't had a chance to do that. Once that happens, there should be less confusion for all. Once you get to a search page at Proquest, after choosing some other Proquest Newspaper database, one of the options includes a dropdown box for Databases, and hidden in that are the historical SF Chronicle, where one would never expect to find it on a page only listing other databases as options in the text (as far as I could see), although the Chronicle is buried in that dropdown box! Again, you cannot get to that Search screen unless you have signed in with a valid SFPL card number after choosing a database from the main database page or doing something else on the site requiring signing in.
