Hello everyone, Here is a question you may not have heard before. Are there any sources out their to find out about ancestors who may have been in the Circus? I received a letter from a cousin who remembers an aunt who "ran away and joined the circus". Her name was Emily (Emma?) Pagano. Her parents were Salvatore and Mariana (Annie) Pagano. She was born in San Francisco in either 1904 or 1906, depending on the source. I have an obituary of her brother, Joseph Frank Pagano (26 Dec 1895-12 Jun 1961) that has her with a married name of Emily Minton. Has anyone ever tried to find ancestors who ran away and joined the Circus? Thanks in advance for your help. Marcus Flansburg Logan, Utah
My great great uncle owned and operated the Sherman Circus. Their home was in Pacheco in Contra Costa County although they traveled everywhere. I think one of the flyers I have has them in the San Francisco area. There is a circus museum in TX and I believe one more elsewhere. I will write my friend who helped me with my research and find out the contact information and I will get back to you with that. --- On Wed, 8/20/08, mflansburg@comcast.net <mflansburg@comcast.net> wrote: From: mflansburg@comcast.net <mflansburg@comcast.net> Subject: [CASANFRA] Circus Genealogy??? Hi, Marcus... I did a search for Circus-related information and wasn't able to find anything. However, I found some other information which may be helpful in finding someone who may have some information about her. I'm not certain what you may or may not know of her, however, here's what I was able to find: Social Security Death Index Name: Emily Minton Birth: 26 Oct 1905 Death: Jan 1977 - Stateline, Douglas, Nevada, United States of America Civil: Alabama Other: Stateline, Douglas, Nevada, United States of America It appears she may have had a son: California Birth Index, 1905-1995 Name: Robert Burgess Minton Birth Date: 5 Mar 1932 Gender: Male Mother's Maiden Name: Pagano Birth County: San Francisco She is documented in all available censuses from her birth, and since she was under the name Pagano in the 1930 census, she may have married between the time of the census and the birth of Robert (assuming this is her son). And, possibly in San Francisco, as she is living in San Francisco AND Robert was born there also. I am emailing censuses and other information regarding her (possible) son separately to you. Good luck on your search... Looked at the California Death Index at http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/de ath/search.cgi This looks like her sister and gives mother's maiden name: DEBELLO ANTONETTE PAGANO 04/22/1902 SILVESTRI PAGANO F CALIFORNIA SANTA CLARA 12/29/1997 The closest I could come in Ancestry.com's Calif Birth Index were not quite and do not agree with maiden name of her mother (unless Saviani is mistranscription and 1907 the year), so I'd guess she was born 1904, which the database does not include: Maria F Pagano 26 Jul 1906 Female Tufa San Francisco Emma Pasena 2 Dec 1907 Female Saviani San Francisco Ellen M Peckham 16 Oct 1906 Female Mahlke San Francisco But if they were travelling, she could have been born somewhere else, as you well know, and the 1910 census may say where. If you can afford it, you might try to get a copy of her Soc Security Application along with the supporting documents. That would/could possibly include a copy of her birth certificate. Or, with the Chronicle available for 1904, someone could try to search for 1904 Pagano Births for you. Remember also family stories about where someone is born aren't always true. My grandmother and her siblings all thought they were born in SF. But my grandmother found out when they tried to find birth certificates as an elderly adult applying for a passport, she had been born in Canada! I don't think any of them were born in SF, not given what we see in the 1891 Canadian and 1900 SF censuses!
