Whether or not the 1895 8th grade exam a hoax or not I thought you would be all interested to hear another bit about it. When I got the exam I sent it to my daughter who teaches English at Thurgood Marshall High School in San Francisco. She liked it so much she printed it out and gave it to all her students and told them that if they completed the test she would give them extra credit. She teaches 3 different classes, one class is for ELD (English Language Development - what we used to call English as a second language) students. She has the lower level students who are FOB (fresh off the boat) and whose English skills are very low, a Senior Sheltered English class, which is for advanced ELD students who can read and write English but still need some help, and a Creative Writing class, which is a mix of freshmen through seniors. Out of all her students she had one student who completed the test by going online and using the Internet to get all the answers! She said it was one of her Senior Sheltered English students, a young woman who came from China! She even found the answer to how many bushels of wheat a wagon box holds! May we all be so motivated to learn! Alyce Traverso Walnut Creek, CA **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms and advice on AOL Money & Finance.
