This school is located in the twelve-class wooden building on Mission street between Fifteenth and Sixteenth streets. It is a mixed school for boys and girls, and now contains six hundred and eighty-nine pupils. This was first instituted on the 10th of May, 1852, in a small building near the old Mission Catholic Church. It was afterwards transferred to Mr. BENTON's brick church, where it remained until 1858 where it was again transferred to its present location. The grammar pupils, with the Principal and teachers, were transferred February 14, 1871, to the Hayes Valley Grammar School. It was then organized as a Primary School, and remained so until the new building was completed, June , 1875, when it was again made a Grammar school.
